Chapter 185 - Training In Paradise

Five days to prepare for the Lava Queen.

The title carried weight that reputation had built across years of dominance. Mei had achieved eighty-nine consecutive victories, the strongest active streak among Kanto Gym Leaders. Challengers came from across regions specifically to test themselves against her.

Most failed.

"Water versus Fire," Sasuke reviewed. "Type advantage should favor us."

"Should," Kiyomi emphasized. "But Mei's record suggests type charts don't tell the whole story."

"They never do. That's why we prepare."

The volcanic training grounds offered conditions that no other location could replicate.

Hot springs bubbled throughout the island's interior, their geothermal heat creating atmospheres that Fire-types thrived in. Sasuke brought Mega Blastoise to train where Fire-type advantage was at its highest.

"Environmental challenge," he explained to his partner. "Mei will fight where heat is her ally. We must learn to function despite it."

Blastoise's Water-typing provided natural resistance to heat, but natural resistance had limits. The volcanic areas pushed those limits deliberately.

Each technique required adaptation.

"Water Gun in steam."

The basic attack launched into air already saturated with moisture. The visible target was obscured, forcing Blastoise to rely on other senses. Sensor training that smoke and steam would eventually require.

"Hydro Pump at full power."

The signature move launched into heat that immediately began evaporating the water. The attack that would have been devastating in normal conditions lost power before reaching full distance.

"More water to compensate," Sasuke calculated. "Or closer range to reduce evaporation time."

Blastoise adjusted, learning the calculations that hot-environment combat demanded.

"Skull Bash on volcanic terrain."

The physical attack required charging, moments of vulnerability that stable ground usually accommodated. But volcanic terrain shifted unpredictably, thermal expansion creating instability that normal battlefields didn't possess.

Balance training. Adaptation. Comprehensive preparation that left no variable unaddressed.

Miyuki's contribution came through conditioning that medical knowledge enabled.

"Heat endurance has limits," she explained, monitoring Blastoise's vital signs. "Push too hard and you risk actual damage. But systematic exposure builds tolerance."

Her Salamence served as training partner, the Dragon-type's Fire resistance allowing it to simulate attacks that actual Fire-types would launch.

"Flamethrower incoming!"

The dragon fire washed over Blastoise's defenses, heat that approximated what Mei's Pokémon would generate. Sasuke watched his partner endure, adapt, learn to function despite conditions that initial exposure would have overwhelmed.

"Better," Miyuki assessed. "Core temperature stabilized faster this time."

Kasumi's contribution was strategic.

"Special cooling berries," she explained, presenting specimens that her cultivation had developed. "They lower internal temperature when consumed. Not enough to counter Fire-type damage directly, but enough to prevent overheating during extended combat."

"Preventive care."

"Exactly. If Mei's strategy is endurance through heat accumulation, these could provide advantage she doesn't expect."

Sasuke examined the berries with appreciation that exceeded their physical value.

"Thank you."

"We support each other. That's what we do."

Kiyomi's research provided tactical intelligence.

"Mei's battle style: aggressive offense," she reported, displaying footage from previous matches. "She doesn't defend. She attacks continuously, overwhelming opponents before they can establish defensive positions."

"Overwhelming firepower."

"Literally. Her Pokémon generate heat that compounds over time. The longer battles last, the more environmental advantage she accumulates."

"So I can't be passive."

"Definitely not. Match her aggression. Pressure back. Don't let her control the tempo or you'll lose to accumulated heat before you can land decisive damage."

Day three shifted focus to Kasumi's Contest preparation.

The Cinnabar Contest celebrated the island's volcanic identity, fire-themed performances dominated, local Coordinators leveraging natural advantages that their Fire-types possessed.

"I don't have Fire-types," Kasumi observed, reviewing competition analysis.

"That could be weakness," Miyuki acknowledged.

"Or opportunity." Kasumi's expression held creative determination. "Subversion as strategy. Everyone expects fire. What if I give them the opposite?"

Glaceon became the centerpiece of her concept.

"'Cold Beauty,'" she explained during practice. "Ice versus Fire as aesthetic statement. Create winter in tropical paradise. Juxtaposition as art."

The beach became her training ground, ice techniques deployed against sand and surf that seemed designed to melt them.

But that was the point.

Blizzard created snowfall on black volcanic sand. Aurora Veil cast prismatic light against tropical sun. Ice Beam froze waves mid-crash, creating sculptures that nature wouldn't naturally produce.

"Visually striking," Miyuki observed.

"Exactly. Contrast makes both elements more beautiful."

Local Coordinators gathered to watch, their expressions showing surprise that evolved into respect.

"Bold approach," one commented. "Either brilliant or disastrous."

"I'm aiming for brilliant."

Day four brought volcano hiking that everyone needed.

The guided tour led them through terrain that tourist paths made accessible while preserving the volcano's essential nature. Heat increased as they climbed, but sustainable levels that preparation had made manageable.

"The caldera," their guide announced at a viewpoint that revealed the volcano's heart.

Massive crater stretched below, its scale exceeding expectation. Lava glowed in visible pools, safely distant but undeniably present.

"Active but stable," the guide continued. "The current activity is normal for Cinnabar. The volcano has maintained this state for decades."

Wild Fire Pokémon inhabited terrain that would have killed most species.

Magmar emerged from vents with casual comfort, their bodies designed for temperatures that would have melted steel. Charmeleon sunned on rocks that radiated visible heat. Torkoal trudged through landscapes where nothing grew because nothing could survive.

"Natural habitat," the guide explained. "These Pokémon don't just survive here, they require it. The volcanic heat provides energy they need. Minerals they consume. The environment they evolved for."

"Symbiotic relationship," Miyuki observed with professional interest.

"Exactly. The volcano provides ecosystem. The Fire Pokémon help regulate it through their activity. Nature's balance, maintained across geological time."

The summit revealed everything.

Cinnabar Island spread below them, its geography visible in ways that ground-level perspective couldn't provide. Black beaches edged blue ocean. Resort infrastructure dotted lush vegetation. The research facility gleamed with purpose that scientific pursuit had built.

And surrounding it all, ocean stretched to horizons that seemed infinite.

"This is why we travel," Sasuke said quietly.

The statement drew attention from companions who understood exactly what he meant.

"Moments like this," he continued. "Views that can't be captured. Experiences that can't be replicated. The feeling of standing somewhere that journey made possible."

"Not just badges and ribbons," Kasumi agreed.

"Not just research or competition," Miyuki added.

"Living fully," Kiyomi concluded.

They stood together at the volcano's summit, four travelers who had grown beyond what departure from Blackthorn had imagined.

Six months of shared experience had created bonds that simple friendship couldn't describe. The challenges they'd faced, and those still ahead, had forged something that the journey's conclusion wouldn't dissolve.
