Morning brought planning that completion demanded.
Their journey across Kanto was finished, eight badges collected, journey's first phase concluded. But conclusion of one phase meant beginning of another, and decisions needed to be made about what came next.
"Options," Kiyomi summarized, analytical mind already cataloging possibilities.
"Immediately to Johto, eight more badges toward Silver Conference qualification."
"Challenge rematches, improve strategies against opponents we've already faced."
"Train specifically for Elite Four, prepare early for challenges beyond gym level."
"Explore remaining Kanto areas, territories we passed through without fully investigating."
"Kasumi's situation," Miyuki added. "Five ribbons. Atleast three more needed for Grand Festival."
"Johto also has Contest Halls," Kasumi confirmed. "Same cities as the gyms, typically. We could collect ribbons while Sasuke collects badges."
"My goals align too," Miyuki said. "Johto's breeding centers are famous throughout the regions. Especially Goldenrod City."
She glanced at Kasumi with slight smile.
"Your home city. The breeding facility there pioneered techniques that other regions still study."
"My Mom would love to see you," Kasumi acknowledged.
"Johto is rich with archaeological sites," Kiyomi added. "The Ruins of Alph, most famous undeciphered ancient writing in any region. My expertise could potentially contribute to understanding that scholars have pursued for decades."
"You think you could crack it?"
"I think I have context that other researchers lacked. The connections between ancient sites that our journey revealed, those patterns might apply to Alph's mysteries."
"Decision?"
The question came from Sasuke, but the answer was unanimous.
"Johto."
Next destination confirmed.
"But first," Miyuki interjected. "One week rest."
"We've been traveling for eight months," she continued when the suggestion drew surprised attention. "Constant movement. Constant challenge. Constant pressure."
"Yeah. We need a break," Kasumi agreed.
"Viridian's comfortable enough for extended stay," Kiyomi added. "We've earned downtime."
The decision settled with relief that traveling urgency usually prevented.
During the week, important conversations occurred.
Sasuke found time with each of his companions individually, conversations that the complicated situation demanded.
The Pokémon Center's small garden provided privacy that public spaces couldn't.
"About your feelings..." Sasuke began.
"Remember, we agreed to wait." Miyuki's response came gently. "After Conference. We'll revisit everything then."
"I know. But I want you to know something regardless."
She waited, golden eyes attentive.
"You're amazing. Your compassion. Your intelligence. The way you care for every Pokémon you encounter, partner or wild, owned or free."
"Sasuke..."
"Whoever I choose, or don't choose, you're important to me forever. That won't change regardless of how romantic questions resolve."
Tears formed in Miyuki's eyes despite obvious effort to prevent them.
"That means everything."
"It should. Because it's true."
...
Evening painted the sky in colors that seemed designed for difficult conversations.
"I've been distant," Sasuke admitted.
"I understand why." Kasumi's response held acceptance rather than accusation. "The confession was scary for me. Not knowing how you'd respond was worse."
"I wish I had answers."
"Do you?"
"No. But I don't want to lie to you. You deserve honesty more than false comfort."
Kasumi's smile was sad but genuine.
"That's why I love you."
The word landed with impact that previous conversations hadn't produced.
Love.
Said directly.
Sasuke's heart almost stopped.
He couldn't say it back. Not yet. Not when uncertainty still clouded everything.
"Don't respond." Kasumi seemed to understand. "I know you can't. Just wanted you to know."
"Kasumi..."
"It's okay. Really." Her hand found his briefly. "Whenever you're ready. However you're ready. I'll be here."
...
The research section provided atmosphere that suited both their temperaments.
"You're overthinking."
No preamble. No softening. Pure Kiyomi directness.
"How do you know?"
"I know you." Her golden eyes held certainty that analytical minds sometimes achieved. "You process everything logically. Emotions don't respond to logic. The conflict creates confusion."
"So what do I do?"
"Stop forcing it." Her advice came without judgment. "The decision will come naturally. Heart knows what it wants. Head just needs to stop interfering."
"What if I hurt everyone?"
"You will. Inevitably." The honesty was characteristic. "There's no perfect solution. Someone will experience disappointment regardless of what you choose."
"That's not comforting."
"It's not meant to be. It's meant to be true." Kiyomi's expression softened slightly. "But honesty minimizes pain. Whatever you decide, decide honestly. We'll survive regardless."
"You're certain?"
"I'm certain we're family. That doesn't change based on romantic outcomes. Whatever happens, we survive it together."
Comfort in her certainty.
The logic that emotions couldn't provide.
The route to Johto was planned.
Viridian Port would provide cruise ship passage to the Johto continent, several days of ocean travel that would land them at New Bark Town, the starting point for Johto's gym circuit.
"First stop after arrival. Violet City," Kiyomi reviewed. "Flying-type gym. Leader is Asuma Sarutobi."
"What do we know about him?"
"Strategic specialist. Uses aerial tactics that ground-based counters struggle with. His signature Pokémon is a Skarmory."
"Another challenge to meet."
The Mobile Home rolled toward Viridian Port with passengers whose week of rest had provided exactly what was needed.
Kanto behind them.
Johto ahead.
