Chapter 12 - First mission together

The wall in front of them was not just a barrier.

It was a decision.

Six candidates stood before it, and for a moment, no one moved.

On the other side, something waited.

You could feel it.

Not see it. Not hear it clearly.

But feel it.

Like the air itself was watching.

Hana broke the silence first.

"So… anyone actually going to make a plan, or are we just pretending we have one?"

Alexei exhaled sharply.

"A plan requires coordination. Something this group clearly lacks."

Before anyone could respond

Ren stepped forward

and walked straight through the wall.

No hesitation.

No warning.

Just action.

Hana blinked.

"Okay… that works too."

She followed.

Dmitri gave a short grunt and moved after them.

Maya looked at Arin.

"Are we doing this?"

Arin nodded once.

"Stay close."

They stepped through together.

The world changed instantly.

Not gradually.

Not naturally.

One step forward

and everything broke.

The training bay was gone.

Replaced by something unstable.

Collapsed stone pillars. Broken terrain. A grey void stretching endlessly in every direction.

No walls.

No ceiling.

No exit.

Only scattered debris and faint purple veins glowing beneath the surface.

Arin stopped.

His chest tightened.

"This isn't a training field," he said quietly.

"This is a simulation designed to kill mistakes."

Maya moved closer to him.

"Where is everyone?"

Arin scanned the area.

No Ren.

No Hana.

No Dmitri.

No Alexei.

"They split us," he said.

"The wall wasn't a barrier. It was a separation gate."

Maya's voice dropped.

"That's not fair."

Arin didn't respond.

Fair didn't matter here.

Only survival did.

A sound cut through the silence.

Sharp.

Metallic.

Wrong.

Arin's body moved before his mind caught up.

"Move!"

He pushed Maya aside just as something tore through the space where she had been standing.

The drone appeared mid-motion.

Fast.

Too fast.

Its body blurred between frames of movement, red sensors locking instantly onto Arin.

B-Rank.

Real threat.

No hesitation.

It attacked again.

Arin raised his arm.

Too slow.

Claws tore across his forearm.

Pain exploded.

He staggered back.

Blood hit the ground.

The drone didn't pause.

Didn't evaluate.

Didn't hesitate.

It adapted.

Instantly.

A flash of steel cut through the air.

Ren.

He appeared between them like he had always been there.

His blade struck the drone with precise force.

Sparks burst outward.

The drone shifted back.

Not damaged.

Just… recalculating.

"Move," Ren said.

Arin steadied himself.

"I'm not leaving you."

Ren didn't look at him.

"You're not fighting at full strength."

That hit harder than the drone.

Arin didn't answer.

"Protect the healer," Ren added.

"That's your role right now."

The drone attacked again.

The fight turned chaotic.

Ren moved like flowing water.

Every strike controlled.

Every step calculated.

But the drone was learning.

Too fast.

Every pattern Ren showed

the drone began to counter.

Maya stayed behind Arin, hands glowing faintly as she tried to stabilize his injury.

Then a voice echoed inside his mind.

Hana.

Northwest. We're pinned.

Her voice was strained.

Dmitri is holding it off but not for long.

Then a pause.

And Alexei is doing something stupid.

Arin almost smiled despite the situation.

Of course he is.

I heard that.

Even now, she sounded amused.

The drone shifted targets.

Maya.

Arin saw it instantly.

The change in angle.

The drop in movement.

The intent.

He didn't think.

He moved.

His body slammed into hers, pushing her out of the path.

The drone's claws tore across his back.

Heat.

Pain.

Impact.

He hit the ground hard.

Air left his lungs.

Maya reached for him immediately.

"Stay still—"

"Don't," he forced out.

"It'll target you again."

Ren was slowing.

His shoulder wound had worsened.

His movements were still precise

but not perfect anymore.

And here

perfection mattered.

Arin looked at the drone.

Then at Ren.

Then back at the drone.

We end this now.

The next attack came fast.

Too fast.

Ren wouldn't dodge it.

Arin saw it clearly.

That single moment where everything aligned.

He moved.

Faster than before.

Faster than he should have been.

He stepped between Ren and the strike

and raised both arms.

Everything went quiet.

Not silent.

Focused.

The world narrowed.

The pressure inside his chest surged.

Then changed.

Not explosive.

Not wild.

Compressed.

Controlled.

Golden light burst outward.

Not like before.

Denser.

Heavier.

Stronger.

The drone's claws hit the field

and shattered.

Clean.

Instant.

Impossible.

For three seconds

Arin stood there

holding something he was never meant to show.

Then it collapsed.

The light faded.

His legs gave out.

Ren caught him before he hit the ground.

No words.

Just action.

Maya stared.

Her hands frozen mid-motion.

Understanding something she shouldn't.

The drone tried to retreat.

Too late.

A massive metal hand caught it mid-air.

Dmitri.

He crushed the drone slowly, mechanically.

Hana stood behind him.

But she wasn't looking at the drone.

She was looking at Arin.

And for the first time

she wasn't smiling.

"You…"

Her voice was quiet.

Not playful.

Not curious.

Real.

"That wasn't normal."

Arin forced a breath.

"Adrenaline."

Hana's eyes narrowed.

"No."

Alexei arrived last.

Late.

Frustrated.

Unaware.

"What happened?"

No one answered.

He saw the broken drone.

Saw Arin on the ground.

Saw the looks.

And understood one thing.

He missed something important.

And he hated that.

Voss's voice filled the space.

"Exercise complete. Thirty-seven minutes."

A pause.

Then

"Well done."

Another pause.

Longer.

"Especially you, Arin."

The world reformed around them.

The void collapsed.

The arena returned.

But something had changed.

Not the environment.

The team.

No one spoke as medical arrived.

Maya stayed close to Arin.

Ren said nothing, but his eyes had changed.

Dmitri gave a small nod.

Respect.

Hana stayed quiet.

Watching.

Thinking.

Alexei didn't hide his stare anymore.

One moment.

Three seconds.

That was all it took.

To stop being invisible.

Later, when everyone had left

Arin sat alone.

The silence felt heavier now.

His chest hummed.

Not unstable.

Not afraid.

Waiting.

The door opened.

Voss walked in.

She didn't speak immediately.

Just looked at him.

Measured.

Calculated.

Certain.

Then she said:

"My office. 2100."

A pause.

"Don't be late."

She turned and left.

Arin didn't move.

Not right away.

Because for the first time

the thought wasn't if he'd been seen.

It was:

How much did they see?
