Night covered Emberfall City as steam drifted through the glowing canals.
Outside the Emberfall Research Laboratory, Elior stood face-to-face with Commander Varkis.
Behind him, members of Team Umber were loading the stolen research equipment onto a transport vehicle.
Elior stepped forward.
"You're not taking that."
Riolu crouched beside him, fists clenched.
Infernyx's flames flared behind them while Voltiger sparked nervously and Lunashade's shadow stretched across the ground.
Commander Varkis sighed softly.
"You truly believe you can stop us?"
He raised a Pokéball.
"Very well. I'll show you the difference between us."
The Pokéball burst open in a flash of dark light.
A large black fox-like Pokémon appeared, its fur edged with crimson energy and its eyes glowing like burning embers.
Varkis smiled.
"Meet my partner—Umbreon."
Riolu's ears twitched immediately.
Elior stepped forward.
"Riolu, this is our battle!"
Riolu nodded fiercely.
The Battle Begins
"Umbreon, Shadow Claw!"
Umbreon dashed forward with incredible speed, dark energy forming sharp claws around its paws.
"Riolu, dodge and use Quick Attack!"
Riolu leapt aside and rushed forward in a blur, striking Umbreon across the chest.
Umbreon slid back slightly but quickly regained its footing.
Varkis smirked.
"Not bad."
"Umbreon, Dark Pulse!"
A wave of dark energy exploded outward.
BOOM.
Riolu was pushed backward across the street.
"Riolu, get up!" Elior shouted.
Riolu stood again, breathing heavily.
"Now—Force Palm!"
Blue aura energy surrounded Riolu's paw as it dashed forward.
The glowing strike hit Umbreon directly.
Umbreon stumbled for the first time.
Varkis's smile faded slightly.
"So you can use Aura."
Umbreon shook itself and growled.
But then Varkis raised his hand.
"Umbreon… it's time."
Dark energy began spreading across Umbreon's body.
The air became heavy.
Streetlights flickered.
Riolu staggered slightly.
Elior felt the strange pressure again.
"What is that power…?"
Varkis answered calmly.
"You've experienced Resonance, haven't you?"
The dark energy intensified.
"But Team Umber discovered something even greater."
Umbreon's body erupted with black aura.
Umbreon's rings glowed blood-red.
The battlefield trembled.
"This is Dark Resonance."
Riolu struggled to stand against the pressure.
"Umbreon—Night Burst!"
A massive blast of dark energy shot forward.
Riolu tried to counter with Force Palm—
—but the attack was overwhelmed.
BOOM.
Riolu was thrown across the street.
Dust filled the air.
Elior ran forward.
"Riolu!"
The small Pokémon slowly tried to stand… but collapsed.
It couldn't continue.
Silence fell across the battlefield.
Commander Varkis returned Umbreon to its Pokéball.
"Your bond with your Pokémon is impressive," he said calmly.
"But it is still weak."
He looked toward the distant mountains.
"When Pyrotherion fully awakens, Dark Resonance will reshape this world."
Elior clenched his fists.
"You're wrong."
Varkis simply turned away.
"Grow stronger, Elior."
He stepped onto the transport vehicle.
"Perhaps next time… you won't be so disappointing."
The engines roared.
Within seconds, the Team Umber vehicle disappeared into the night.
The street became quiet again.
Riolu slowly lifted its head.
Infernyx stepped beside Elior, flames burning brighter.
Voltiger sparked with anger.
Lunashade's shadow stretched silently.
Elior looked toward the mountains where Team Umber had gone.
For the first time…
He had been truly defeated.
But the fire in his eyes had only grown stronger.
"Next time," he whispered.
"We won't lose."
