The streets outside the dumpling shop were quiet, the last traces of sunlight slipping behind distant rooftops. Inside, the warmth of steamed dumplings and faint incense made the shop feel like a small world of its own.
Yulan was finishing up the dishes when Li Wei walked in, holding a small, neatly folded scarf.
"For the evening," Li Wei said simply, handing it to Yulan. "It's cold outside. Don't catch a chill."
Yulan's fingers brushed Li Wei's as he took the scarf. The contact lingered just a heartbeat too long. He looked up, cheeks flushed, and caught Li Wei watching him with that soft, unreadable gaze.
"…Thank you," Yulan murmured.
Li Wei's smirk softened into something warmer. "I said don't thank me," he teased, though his eyes held a rare gentleness.
After closing, the three of them stepped outside. Chen Hao, carrying a small bag of leftovers, paused at the corner.
"I'm going to grab a bite. Don't start a coup without me," he joked.
Li Wei rolled his eyes but didn't move. "Hao…"
Yulan glanced at him. "…We'll be fine."
As Chen Hao walked away, a quiet settled over the street. Li Wei turned, brushing a strand of hair from Yulan's face. "You've been working hard today," he murmured.
Yulan's heart thudded. "I… I'm fine," he said softly, though he felt the warmth of Li Wei's hand linger on his cheek longer than necessary.
Li Wei leaned just a little closer, close enough that their breaths mingled. "…You're always fine," he said, voice teasing yet sincere. "But I like watching you try anyway."
Yulan's pulse quickened. "…Li Wei…"
Before he could stop himself, Li Wei's lips brushed lightly against his — a fleeting, almost hesitant touch. Not a kiss meant for passion, but for intimacy, trust, and teasing.
Yulan's breath caught. "…That was—"
"A test," Li Wei said softly, pulling back just enough to let Yulan process it. "…To see if you'd notice."
Yulan blinked, cheeks burning, heart racing. "…I noticed."
Li Wei smirked, leaning closer again. "Good. I like when you notice."
From around the corner, Chen Hao's voice called faintly: "All good over there? Don't get kidnapped or something!"
Li Wei sighed, shaking his head. "…He's impossible."
Yulan chuckled quietly, feeling a warmth that had nothing to do with the scarf around his neck. "Maybe… that's why I like him."
Li Wei tilted his head, eyes teasing yet soft. "…Maybe I like you noticing things too."
And for a moment, the quiet street, the dim lights, and the lingering tension between them felt like their world — just theirs, safe, and intimate.
