Chapter 23 - CHAPTER 23 — THE HALL OF ILLUSIONS

The students were next led into the Hall of Illusions, a long corridor lined with mirrors that reflected not their faces, but their deepest fears.

Lyra hesitated at the entrance. Her reflection twisted into monstrous forms—familiar faces accusing her, shadow versions of herself screaming, monstrous beasts with teeth snapping.

Mira gasped beside her. "They look real… almost real enough to hurt you."

Kael's eyes scanned the hall. "Don't focus on them. They only exist if you give them power."

The first illusion struck: a towering shadow golem, fists swinging down at Lyra. She leapt aside, chains of shadow lashing out to bind it. Mira's wind magic deflected shards of broken glass as mirrors shattered under magical pressure.

Dorian appeared in the reflections, taunting her. "You'll break before the maze ends."

Lyra gritted her teeth, realizing the maze adapted to their fears. Every step created more illusions—dragons with glowing eyes, serpents coiling like living smoke, phantom versions of teachers shouting impossible commands.

Kael moved silently through the chaos, striking illusions with precise shadow blades, disrupting their magic. Lyra noticed something: the illusions were reactive. They fed on hesitation, fear, and indecision.

She concentrated. Her mark glowed, chains of shadow expanding to envelop the illusions. One by one, the monsters dissolved into harmless mist. Dorian's mocking voice faded into silence.

As the last illusion collapsed, the corridor walls shifted, revealing the next stage. Lyra's chest heaved, her hands trembling. She had survived again—but each test was more dangerous and psychologically taxing than the last.
