"I love you," the man said. "It's going to be forever. Not even death can separate us."
Jessica turned her head to look at him. He was sitting right beside her in the moving car, close enough that their shoulders touched, but his face refused to come into focus. It swam and blurred like something seen through a rain-streaked window. His voice came to her from very far away, thick and muffled, as though he were speaking to her from the bottom of a swimming pool.
Their fingers were laced together. She could feel that clearly. That part was always clear.
"Won't you say you love me back?"
Jessica giggled, and she could not have said why. She was confused and she was warm and both of those things existed at the same time.
"Of course I do. Don't be silly."
