Kai laid Jessica gently on the bed and sat beside her, his weight making the mattress dip. The room was warm and softly lit, the kind of room that had been prepared with more care than even he had expected. His mother had clearly been busy, and it showed.
"Get some rest now," he said softly.
Jessica nodded, but her eyes were already moving around the room, tracing the walls, the furniture, the heavy curtains drawn against the night. The strange feeling from earlier had not left her. It clung to the edges of her mind, whispering that she had seen these walls before, walked this floor, breathed this air.
She sat up, unable to lie still. "Thank you," she said finally, meeting his gaze. "For everything."
Kai reached out and pushed a strand of her hair that had fallen across her face, and tucked it gently and carefully behind her ear. The gesture was so natural, so easy, as if he had done it a thousand times.
"Don't thank me," he said. "I did what any Alpha would have done."
