Chapter 77 - The Leash

The three special agents practically ran out of the conference room, the heavy glass door clicking shut behind them, sealing Evelyn and me inside.

Evelyn didn't move. She stood by the table, her hands gripping the edge of the mahogany wood so tightly her knuckles were white. She looked like a woman standing on the gallows, waiting for the trapdoor to open.

I walked over to the window, looking out at the city skyline. The morning sun was bright, reflecting off the glass and steel of the Vanguard tower.

"You know," I said, keeping my back to her, "when you first walked into this building, I was genuinely terrified of you. You were the Inquisitor. The untouchable agent of the law. You had a Willpower that I couldn't break with money, threats, or charm."

I turned around to face her.
