Chapter 15 - The Northern Festival

Midsummer Council

The great hall had been transformed, which was a word that understated what forty servants and eight hours of labour could do to a room designed for making people feel small.

The banners of the Northern houses still hung from the raftersall fourteen of them, the oldest so faded they were more suggestion than colour but tonight they were flanked by lengths of silver cloth that caught the candlelight and gave the stone walls something they almost never had: warmth. Every sconce had been doubled, and the long feasting tables had been cleared to the edges to make a floor of open flagstone that was already filling with bodies in motion.

The musicians in the upper gallery had started with four. Now there were seven. Somewhere in the second hour, a pair of brothers from House Valdren had appeared with a bodhrán and a long-necked fiddle and been waved up without ceremony, and the ensemble had gone from careful to committed without anyone formally deciding to let it happen. The Northern reel they were playing now had a weight to it something that had stopped being technique and started being a fact of the room.

It was Midsummer Council. The one formal occasion in the Northern calendar permitted to look like an occasion, because even the North which held comfort at arm's length as a point of principle had concluded that one night a year of behaving as though life was worth celebrating was a practical investment in morale rather than a concession to weakness.

The food had been designed for spectacle, which was unusual enough that people were spending time simply looking at it.

The long service tables ran the full length of the east wall, and whoever had been given the task had clearly decided that scarcity and restraint were two different things. There were joints of venison lacquered in a dark reduction, whole river-trout arranged on beds of winter herbs, towers of black bread and soft cheese from the western dairies, and in the centre drawing a small, involuntary crowd a roasted boar that had been presented with its tusks gilded and a wreath of dried juniper circling its neck, which was either festive or absurd depending on your disposition and either way was impossible to ignore.

Lord Brenn of House Vassick was standing in front of the boar with his arms crossed, frowning.

"It's looking at me," he announced to no one in particular.

"It hasn't got eyes," said his wife, Coranna, without looking up from the plate she was building.

"There are sockets."

"Then look somewhere else."

She handed him bread and steered him away by the elbow. He went, still glancing back over his shoulder.

At the far end of the table, Kael was constructing a plate with the methodical seriousness of a man approaching a tactical problem. He had two kinds of meat, a structural arrangement of bread to serve as a base, and was currently deliberating over the cheese selection with an expression he usually reserved for pre-combat assessments.

"You're going to eat all of that," observed Mira, the youngest of the Valdren cousins, appearing at his elbow.

"That is generally what food is for," Kael said.

"You've got enough there for three people."

"I am a large person."

"You're not that large."

Kael looked at her. She was seventeen and had the forthright manner of someone who had grown up in a household of eight siblings and had learned early that hesitation was a resource you couldn't afford.

He handed her a piece of the venison without ceremony.

"Come on," he said, picking up his plate. "I want to see if Holt actually dances, or if he just says he does."

He did dance.

Captain Holt of the Iron Guard, forty-three years old, seventeen of them in service, broadly considered to be the kind of man who had a functional rather than decorative relationship with his body was on the floor with a woman from the western garrison who was approximately a foot shorter than him and leading him with the cheerful authority of someone who has accepted that height is not the same as competence.

He was not good. He was, however, committed, which in matters of dancing counted for more than people gave it credit for. His footwork was half a beat behind, and he had the concentrated expression of a man counting in his head, but every time he missed a step he grinned rather than grimacing and the woman with him seemed to have decided this was sufficient.

Kael watched from the edge of the floor.

"He told me he used to dance at the harvest festivals in Drevna," Mira said, appearing at his shoulder. She had, without being asked, procured herself a cup of the mulled cider and was holding it with both hands. "He made it sound like he was quite good."

"He made that sound like something," Kael said.

Holt caught his eye from across the floor. He made a gesture that was either come join us or send help, it was difficult to be certain which. Kael gave him a nod that communicated precisely nothing and watched him be redirected back into the reel by his dance partner.

Mira glanced up at him. "You're not going to dance at all, are you."

"I'm going to eat my food," Kael said, "and watch the room."

"You could do both."

"I could watch the room better if you stopped talking."

She smiled into her cider. She didn't stop talking.

At the high end of the hall, where the long feasting table curved slightly toward the dais, the older lords had settled into the serious, companionable business of political conversation lubricated by decent wine.

Lord Hadric of House Denn senior councillor, architecture of the North's last three trade agreements, possessor of a white beard that had become over the decades a kind of structural element of his face was holding court at the curve with the unhurried confidence of a man who knew that the festival would still be there when he had finished his thought.

"The western grain situation," he was saying to Lord Fernault, who was nodding in the way that indicated he'd heard this before but was too polite to say so, "is not primarily a supply question. It is a documentation question. The supply is adequate. What is not adequate is the record of where it goes."

"You sound like young Maren's girl," Fernault said, meaning the treasurer's daughter, meaning Seraphina. "She was saying something similar to the Council two weeks ago."

"She was right," Hadric said simply.

Fernault looked at him.

"Don't look surprised," Hadric said. "I can recognize correct arithmetic regardless of the age of the person producing it." He took a long sip of wine. "What I find interesting is that someone bothered to listen."

They both glanced, with the studied casualness of experienced councillors, toward the dance floor, where the Crown Prince was currently guiding a girl in a silver dress through a pivot.

"Interesting times," Fernault said.

"All times are interesting," Hadric replied. "The good ones just feel that way on purpose."

In the gallery above, two of the younger guardsmen had claimed the corner with the best view and were engaged in the specific, gleeful sport of commentary.

"The one in the red coat," said Norvo, pointing. "Watch. He's going to try to cut in on Lord Brenn's nephew."

"He won't," said Tomec.

"He absolutely will, he's been circling for half an hour."

Below, the man in the red coat hovered at the edge of the floor for another thirty seconds, psyched himself into motion, took two steps toward his target, got gently redirected by the force of the reel's current, and ended up dancing with Lord Brenn's nephew's grandmother instead, which was based on her footwork not the worst outcome available.

"See," Tomec said.

"That's not what I said was going to happen."

"You said he'd cut in."

"He tried to cut in. I was right about the intention."

"The intention doesn't count."

"The intention always counts," Norvo said with great conviction. "Ask anyone."

He refilled his cup from the jug they'd stationed between them and settled back against the railing, feet up, watching the hall with the satisfied air of a man at a theatre.

Seraphina had been brought by her father, who had been brought by the formal invitation that went to every senior treasury official, and she had worn the silver dress her mother had made three years ago, the one she reserved for occasions that specifically required silver, because it was a dress that required a certain kind of attention and she preferred to manage her own attention levels.

She was counting.

The footwork of the Northern reel was a specific, demanding pattern three steps right, two back, a pivot on the left and the musicians were taking it at a tempo that didn't quite allow for the natural weight of the turn, so she was working it out in real time, her lips moving almost imperceptibly.

"You're counting," Lorenzo said.

His breath was warm against her ear, which she dealt with by maintaining her posture and her arithmetic.

"Music is mathematics," she said, keeping her eyes on the floor. "Numbers in time. Ratios and fractions."

"Music is feeling." He guided her through the pivot — with the conscious restraint of someone managing their own strength, keeping his hands deliberately light. "Stop counting. Just listen."

She stopped counting.

It was an act of will, the same way closing a ledger before you'd found the error was an act of will not because the counting wasn't useful, but because he'd made a specific argument and fair-mindedness required testing an argument before dismissing it.

She listened. She stopped analyzing the tempo. She looked up, which she had not done since they'd started.

He was looking at her.

He looked different up close than he did across a courtyard or across a desk. The open face warm, direct, slightly too honest for most rooms he occupied was the same, but there was something underneath it tonight she hadn't had the angle to see before. A strain. The deliberate quality of someone holding the full weight of themselves back, choosing precisely how much to apply.

He was shaking slightly. Not visibly she could feel it through his hands.

"You're shaking," she said.

"I'm trying not to lead too hard." His smile faltered, and under the falter was the actual expression — exhausted, carrying something heavy enough that it had started to show at the edges. "If I let go, I break things."

Seraphina thought about the Watch Tower. About draw speeds arriving at the pitch of a forge hammer. About three years of grain reports in a cabinet where inconvenient things went to be invisible.

"Then don't let go," she said. "Just hold on."

His hands steadied. Not completely. But enough.

They danced.

She did not count the steps. She discovered, with the specific surprise of someone who has been wrong about something they were very certain about, that the music worked without the arithmetic that the ratio and the feeling were the same thing, arrived at through different routes.

She did not tell him this. It was a private discovery. But she held on.

High above the warmth and the music and the noise, in the deep shadows of the upper gallery, Alexander watched the hall.

He was wrapped in a heavy bear-fur cloak and shivering anyway the cold from the previous night still sitting in his bones. His left arm was strapped against his chest. His good hand gripped the stone railing.

The hall below was alive in a way the Citadel mostly wasn't. The musicians had fully found themselves by now the two brothers from Valdren had pushed the tempo just enough and the whole room had responded to it, the way a fire responds to air. People who had been standing at the edges were on the floor. People who were too old or too dignified to dance were doing the Northern stomp in the corner with the relieved enthusiasm of men who had found a legitimate context for an emotion they didn't know what to do with otherwise.

He watched Kael deposit himself against a pillar with a plate the size of a shield and hold court with the Valdren girl, who seemed entirely unintimidated by him, which was either very brave or very perceptive. He watched Captain Holt spin his partner badly and laugh about it openly, which was a version of Holt he had not previously encountered and which he filed away with interest. He watched Lord Hadric lean toward Fernault at the high table and say something low and careful in the way of men who are making sure a thing gets said while the room is too loud to hear it.

He watched the room breathe.

Elara appeared at his shoulder the way she always appeared without announcement, because she had been moving through this Citadel long enough to know where Alexander would be before he did.

She was carrying a wooden plate of bread and cheese salvaged from the kitchen supply rather than the feast service, because the feast service would have required explaining and the explanation would have taken longer than the alternative.

"They look happy," she said softly.

"They look like they've forgotten," Alexander murmured. His voice was thin. "They dance while the West sharpens its knives."

"Maybe," Elara said, "they just want one night to forget about knives."

She offered him the cheese. He took it but didn't eat.

Below, a fresh wave of laughter broke from the corner where the stomp was happening someone had recruited the boar-averse Lord Brenn, who was deeply in over his head but had committed to the bit with the good grace of a man who knew when he had lost. His wife Coranna was watching from three feet away with an expression that was trying very hard to be dignified and failing.

They're not forgetting, Alexander thought. They know exactly what's waiting. They're just choosing, for one night, not to stand in front of it.

He wasn't sure whether that was wisdom or avoidance. He wasn't sure those were entirely different things.

He looked at his wrist. The dark veins, faint in the gallery shadows.

He thought about the gravity-mace. The cold that had come up to meet it not because he'd called it but because the conditions had been right. How natural it had felt. More natural than six years of combat forms. More natural than every diplomatic dinner he'd survived. Natural the way breathing was natural the way breathing stopped feeling like a choice.

He thought about what it meant that it was getting easier. And whether easier was the right word, or whether what was actually happening was that the distance between him and it was getting shorter, and he hadn't been moving toward it, which meant—

He ate the bread. He did not finish the thought.

Elara reached out and tucked the bear-fur more firmly around his good shoulder. The gesture was so ordinary and without strategy that it sat in the middle of his chest like a warm coal not overwhelming, just present.

"Alex," she said.

"Don't," he said. Not unkindly.

She didn't say it.

They stood at the railing in the cold, watching. Below them, the hall was all light and noise and warmth, the music looping into something slower now, couples settling into it, the whole room finding a different rhythm like a tide going out.

Lorenzo said something to the girl in the silver dress. She said something back. He laughed the real one, not the court version and she did not look surprised by it, which told you something about her no amount of ledger work could communicate as efficiently.

"She's good for him," Elara said.

"Yes," Alexander said.

"Are you going to go down?"

"No." He handed her the empty plate. "I'm leaving."

She caught his sleeve gently. "Where?"

He looked at her. He thought about the three weeks of bed rest and the books Julia had brought and the reasonable, practical plan of doing nothing for three weeks.

"I need to look something up," he said.

She let go. She looked at him the way she looked at him when she knew she was not going to change the direction of something but wanted it on record that she'd noticed.

"Be careful," she said.

"Always," he said.

She watched him go.

Then she turned back to the railing and looked down at the hall alone at the light and the movement and all those people choosing, for one night, to forget about knives and she listened to the music fill the room below, and she let it.
