Chapter 21 - BREAK ME

I lifted the boy into my arms, adjusting my grip as his small hands clutched tightly at my neck. He was heavier than I expected, his weight settling awkwardly against me, but I held him anyway, shifting slightly to keep him balanced.

His cheek pressed against my shoulder, damp from tears.

"Okay," I murmured softly, more to myself than to him. "Let's figure this out."

My eyes scanned the area until I spotted a man standing near a wooden cart, arranging what looked like bundles of herbs. He seemed approachable enough.

"Excuse me, sir. Good evening," I called as I walked toward him.

He turned, his face lighting up instantly with a wide, welcoming smile.

"Well hello, my dear," he said warmly. "Can I help you with something?"

I returned the smile, though mine felt more strained. "I'm trying to find the market, but I'm not familiar with this area. Could you point me in the right direction?"
