Chapter 64 - The Red Harvest

The grey dawn of the second day didn't bring warmth; it brought a heavy, suffocating silence. The snow had stopped falling, but it sat on the ground like a burial shroud, inches deep and crystalline. Kaelen stood at the edge of the perimeter, his eyes burning from a night without sleep. His Static-Axe was leaned against a stump, its blade flickering with a dull, dying light.

[CONDITION: EXTREME COLD / RESOURCE DEPLETION]

[ALERT: BIO-DATA ANOMALY DETECTED]

In the light of the morning, the forest had changed. The "Hyper-Real" trees were no longer just gnarled wood. Over the course of the night, a thick, pulsating carpet of crimson fungus had climbed up the trunks and sprawled across the forest floor. It looked like raw muscle, wet and glistening, and it gave off a sweet, yeasty aroma that cut through the frozen air like a siren's song.

To five hundred million starving souls, it smelled like life.
