Chapter 63 - CHAPTER 63: SIT INSIDE THE BOMBING YOU DID NOT STOP

[Tondc Staging Area / Eastern Grove — Day 97, 1014]

The CPE logged the missile launch at 1014 and gave him sixteen minutes.

The launch origin was the Mountain's outer battery — Cage's response to the outer earthworks falling was not merely to accelerate the marrow queue. He had also armed the long-range artillery. The CPE tracked the arc in the background of Ethan's operational field: projected impact, target coordinates, time to impact.

Target: Tondc village. Impact: 1030.

He had one advantage Cage had not known to account for: the CPE was faster than a battlefield observer.

Sixteen minutes.

He walked to the command tent entrance. Lexa was inside with Indra, the three clan-chiefs, Clarke. The 1100 Coalition leadership meeting had been scheduled for two hours from now; they had convened early for the timeline review. The tent was the usual beeswax-and-sage, the furs underfoot, the quiet of a room where important people were deciding things.

"The meeting needs to move," Ethan said. "East grove. Now."

Lexa looked at him. The look lasted one second.

"Now," he said again.

They moved.

---

The eastern grove was three hundred meters from Tondc's main buildings, through the treeline, on the slope that Trikru used for the pre-battle meditation sessions Ethan had watched three times and never participated in. It smelled like pine and the specific cold of a slope that didn't get direct morning sun.

Lexa was moving and asking nothing. Indra was moving and asking nothing through body language rather than words — the controlled expression of someone who had learned the hard way that "now" from the right person did not require explanation. The three clan-chiefs were moving with the specific discomfort of people who were being redirected from a scheduled meeting without being told why, and who were doing it anyway because Lexa was moving.

Clarke was the last to leave the tent. She looked at him at the threshold.

Not a question. A read. She was reading the seven things his face was not showing.

She walked into the grove.

At minute 7, Ethan counted the assembled group. Lexa: present. Indra: present. Three clan-chiefs: present. Clarke: present. Raven: present (she had been at the signal console and had followed when the tent emptied).

Lincoln was not present.

He had been at the tent's exterior when the evacuation started. He was not there now.

Ethan made a calculation: Lincoln was either at the command tent looking for Raven, or at the perimeter, or in the village. Lincoln had a specific tendency to check on Octavia's location at intervals that corresponded to the camp's threat-level changes, and the threat level had changed when Ethan had said now.

He could not go after Lincoln without naming why.

He could not name why.

At minute 9, from the treeline's edge, he heard the sound of someone moving at a non-urgent pace that was carrying urgency in its restraint — the controlled fast walk of a person who had decided not to run.

Lincoln emerged from the trees at minute 11 with Octavia at his side.

"She is here," he said.

No more words. He had been in the village — Ethan read the direction he had come from. He had been in the village and he had found Octavia at the herb stores and he had brought her out without telling her why, and Octavia's face was the face of a person who had been moved from a place and had not been told the reason and was now deciding whether to be angry about that.

She had chosen to not be angry. Not yet. She was filing it.

Minute 14.

The meeting bell in Tondc village rang.

Ethan was looking at the slope of the eastern grove, at the canopy layer above the slope, at the specific quality of morning light that came through pine canopy in autumn at this altitude. He had the arc in his peripheral vision — the CPE's trajectory projection, tracking the descent in real time, the sixteen-minute count now at minute 14.

He did not look at the village.

Clarke looked.

She was standing two meters to his left and she turned toward the sound of the bell, which was the Trikru village-alert pattern, three short rings and one long, and the pattern said movement coming and the movement was already in the last two minutes of its arc.

She turned back. Her face was very still.

She did not ask anything.

She was filing the same thing Octavia was filing but from different information.

The bell rang twice more at minute 15.

Minute 16.

The sound was not what he had expected. Not an explosion in the cinematic sense — it was a concussion, followed by a structural noise, followed by secondary sounds that were the result of the primary event finding materials to interact with. Then smoke. The visual signal came after the acoustic one by the physics of the distance.

Forty-seven people.

The CPE would log them in 24-48 hours. He already knew the number because the CPE had been running the population model for Tondc since the Coalition signing, and the population model had been updated last week, and the number at the time of the strike was forty-seven plus or minus two.

He stood in the eastern grove.

Lexa said one word. In Trigedasleng. "Vraun."

He had not encountered this word in Lincoln's coaching sessions or in the bridge-meeting vocabulary. He had encountered it in the show, once, in a subtitle, described as a compound concept: the debt that is owed by someone who knew and did not say.

She was not saying it to him. She was saying it to the smoke.

He did not know if she had figured out that he had known. He had always thought the not-warning was deniable — the command tent evacuation was tactical, prudent, the action of a leader who read threat cues earlier than others. There was no evidence he had known before 1014. The CPE's log was invisible.

She was saying vraun to the smoke.

He looked at the pin on his collar.

It caught the morning light.

The light was the same light it had been before the smoke. The light did not know what had burned.

He turned from the slope and walked back through the eastern grove — through the pine and the cold-slope air, past Lincoln who had saved Octavia by instinct, past Octavia who would ask a question at Ch.65 that he would not answer honestly, past Clarke who had filed seventeen things in a way that was going to have weight later.

The pin caught the light with each step.

He walked until the grove ended and the staging camp began, and then he kept walking because the field-comm timer was running and there were thirty-six hours until the inner-wall assault and the cost of the morning was already in the queue and there was still work to do.

There was always still work to do.
