6 a.m. Location—Bill's Lighthouse—Beach—Objective—Full-Team Intensive Training
"Come out, my partners!"
Red threw out six Poké Balls. Six beams of white light dispersed, and Beedrill, Charmeleon, the giant Onix, Pidgeotto, the blood-red Gyarados, and Scyther appeared before Red, their expressions serious as they awaited training instructions.
"For this period of time, you'll be undergoing intensive training on the beach. You must push yourselves harder than ever before. Soon, a gigantic Pokémon will be waiting for us, and our goal is to defeat it as much as possible!"
Red pointed toward six Pokémon enhancers placed not far away. These were products he had spent a huge sum commissioning Professor Oak to have manufactured, capable of greatly strengthening a Pokémon's physical abilities.
"Beedrill, go take the enhancer on the far left. I've marked each one with names. Yours focuses on your arms and back, while restricting your proud attack power and speed. You must wear it every day to strengthen yourself. Only then can your training results multiply!"
Hearing this, Beedrill flew to the enhancer, lifted it with its twin stingers, and put it on. As expected, the moment it wore the device, discomfort set in. But long-term training had already taught Beedrill to overcome hardship. After a brief adjustment, it quickly flew back to its original spot, awaiting Red's next command.
"Charmeleon, your enhancer covers your limbs, back, mouth, and tail—an all-around restriction. Since you have many offensive methods, you need comprehensive full-body training even more!"
Charmeleon's enhancer was also designed with its future Charizard form in mind. Once evolved, Charizard would gain the ability to fly. To help Charmeleon adapt early, Red specifically restricted its back muscles.
The restrictions on its limbs and tail were meant to strengthen close-combat ability, allowing better suppression of opponents. The mouth restriction trained bite force and flame-release speed.
After hearing Red's instructions, Charmeleon quickly put on its enhancer. Though it showed a strained expression, it still ran back with determination—clearly slower than Beedrill. This made the other Pokémon realize the difficulty ahead, yet none showed fear. Their desire to grow stronger was their belief.
"Onix, your enhancer is based on your evolved Steelix form. It mainly restricts your body, tail, and mouth. For now, focus on training your body and tail first, then your mouth. Remember to balance work and rest!"
The giant Onix put on its enhancer. Due to its massive body, it moved slightly slower while wearing it, but still returned quickly.
"Pidgeotto, your advantage is speed. So your enhancer restricts your wings, slowing you down. You must overcome this weakness as soon as possible!"
"Gyarados, your situation is similar to Onix's. Your sharp fangs are also a key weapon, so compared to Onix, you'll have an additional bite-force training component!"
"Scyther, I designed your enhancer with your future evolution Scizor in mind. It mainly restricts your limbs to train their muscles, so you can gain an even greater advantage in speed!"
Once all six Pokémon had equipped their enhancers, the full-team intensive training officially began.
...
After several days of training, the six Pokémon had adapted to the enhancers' restrictions. Now Red issued the second phase of commands.
"Beedrill, go find a rocky area to train your piercing attacks. Before training, soak yourself in seawater to add weight. Once the seawater fully evaporates, soak again.
Since you are the team's main force, I will also use psychic power and Aura abilities to temper you. While training, you must endure my mental pressure and Aura Sphere attacks. You must react swiftly to dodge. If you're hit, the gravity imposed on you will double."
"Charmeleon, I order you to stand at the edge of the beach and make as much contact with seawater as possible. This will help you overcome your fear of it. When waves crash in, try your best to evaporate them with your flames. But do not act recklessly—if your fire cannot withstand the wave's power, retreat immediately!"
The flame on Charmeleon's tail represented its life, but that didn't mean it couldn't touch seawater. Only amateurs mistakenly believed the tail flame would easily extinguish.
"Onix, your training is similar to Charmeleon's, but your fear of water is even stronger. I won't force you to make full contact. Just soak moderately to overcome your inner fear. Focus mainly on improving your physical reaction speed, and dive into sand pits occasionally to temper yourself!"
"Pidgeotto, your proudest attack is your wings. To train their muscles, whenever a wave appears, you are not allowed to use long-range moves like Air Slash. You must get close and block the wave with your wings—train until you can slice through the sea itself!"
"Gyarados, your training ground is the deep sea. The pressure there is far harsher than the surface, but you must overcome your past. Beyond physical conditioning, you must begin mastering the recovery gap of Hyper Beam—by repeatedly firing it to reduce its side effects. Only then can you seize absolute offensive control!"
"Scyther, like Beedrill, find a rocky area. Your training methods will be similar. Soak in seawater before training to increase your weight, and continuously temper your arm muscles through slashing! That's all—dismissed!"
After hearing Red's commands, the six Pokémon let out a spirited cry before quickly dispersing.
"As expected of Red's Pokémon. Ordinary Pokémon would've collapsed under such high-intensity training. Only these special ones would go this crazy just to become stronger!"
Bill sighed from a distance. If he didn't understand the bond between Red and his Pokémon, he might have thought Red was abusing them. Once, out of goodwill, Bill tried to advise him—only to be scared off by a blast of fire from Charmeleon.
To this day, Bill still remembered Charmeleon's expression—the impatient look that seemed to say,
"Get lost! Don't obstruct my resolve to grow stronger!"
...
After an unknown amount of time, Ash and his group finally arrived at the beach where Red was training. During the journey, Ash and Misty had a small dispute.
It was nothing more than Ash boasting about earning two League Badges, only for Misty to sarcastically retort that both badges had been gifted to him—and that nearly all six of his Pokémon had chosen to follow him of their own accord.
Then Brock added that it was normal for trainers to catch twenty or thirty Pokémon. That comment completely ignited Ash's fighting spirit. Determined to prove himself to Misty and Brock, he rushed to the beach in search of his seventh Pokémon.
As Ash admired the evening scenery, an extremely underdeveloped Krabby crawled past his feet. Calling it a Krabby was generous—it was only slightly bigger than his two palms, practically a "tiny crab."
But eager to prove himself, Ash wasn't picky. He decided to catch it with his own strength. During the scuffle, Ash quickly grabbed a nearby branch. When Krabby snapped the branch in two, he seized the moment and threw a Poké Ball, capturing it inside.
Since Ash already carried six Pokémon, the extra Krabby was automatically sent to Professor Oak's Laboratory.
"Huh?! Where's my Pokémon? It's gone! What happened?!" Ash panicked upon noticing the Poké Ball at his feet had disappeared.
"What do you mean what happened? Don't you even know this?" Misty said speechlessly as she stepped forward to explain, "A Pokémon trainer can only carry up to six Pokémon!"
After Misty and Brock's explanation, Ash finally learned that his newly caught Krabby had been sent to Professor Oak's Laboratory. For some reason, his imagination ran wild with unpleasant thoughts—he worried Professor Oak might turn Krabby into hot soup and hurried to call him.
"Pika! Pika!"
At that moment, Pikachu suddenly leapt excitedly, pointing toward Bill's lighthouse in the distance.
Realizing that a lighthouse meant people—and people meant a phone—Ash excitedly ran over to contact Professor Oak. Misty and Brock followed eagerly as well, delighted at the thought of sleeping in a warm, comfortable bed. But accidents were bound to happen along the way.
A powerful Hyper Beam blasted through the rock in front of Ash and his companions. The lingering shockwave nearly knocked them over, and Pikachu was sent tumbling to the ground.
"What was that?!" In Brock's line of sight, a blood-red figure appeared on the dusk sea. Its crimson pupils turned toward the trio. Only then did Brock realize that not far away stood an enormous, blood-red Gyarados.
