Chapter 86 - Chapter 86: Ash’s Challenge

"Could this silly kid be…?"

Red looked at Abra in surprise, feeling as if he had guessed something, and used the system to check Abra's information.

"Pokémon: Abra (Shiny: Silver)

Attribute: Psychic

Ability: Magic Guard (Does not take damage from weather, items, abilities, status conditions, stat changes, or recoil from moves other than Struggle.)

(To be honest, this Ability is seriously powerful. Just from the first glance at the description, I felt it was insane—far more useful than Rock Head.)

Moves: Teleport, Confusion

Personality: Optimistic and positive, with a charming contrast between aloof coolness and chuunibyo tendencies

Background: Its parents were powerful Alakazam. Because of its exceptional psychic power, its companions felt fear toward it. Its shiny silver color was seen by others of its kind as a monster possessed by a demon. Under pressure from their kind, its parents chose to abandon it.

But Abra did not grieve. Instead, it comforted itself, believing this was merely a trial to grow stronger. It naively believed that becoming stronger would earn back its tribe's acceptance. After accidentally witnessing the dramatic performance of a boy in his chuunibyo phase, it became fascinated with fantasies of a beautiful world."

Red shook his head in sympathy. In his view, it wasn't that shiny Pokémon were born with extraordinary talent; rather, after being abandoned, they were forced to grow strong just to survive.

Based on Red's guess, although shiny Pokémon were indeed rare, their probability likely wasn't as low as one in ten thousand. Most probably perished because they couldn't survive alone in the wild and were thus "forgotten" by the world.

While Red was still thinking about how to take care of Abra, Hitmonchan behind him had long grown fed up with Abra's chain of verbal taunts. It rushed forward, intending to use Comet Punch to let this newcomer witness a senior's strength.

Even though Hitmonchan had only joined Red's team less than three hours ago…

"Foolish creature, do you not understand the gap between you and me?" Abra mocked, using Teleport to avoid Hitmonchan's attack.

Though the room wasn't small, the furniture limited Hitmonchan's movement. In contrast, Abra, familiar with the terrain, freely Teleported into corners, teasing Hitmonchan.

"Alright, you two are going to be partners from now on. Don't make things so tense!" Red intervened.

After hearing Red's command, Hitmonchan wisely stopped attacking. Abra, however, still wanted to continue teasing, but Red used his psychic power to forcibly hold it in place.

(Such overwhelming mental power… Could this lord be the legendary Demon King of Sorcery?)

Controlled by Red's psychic force, Abra tried to struggle, only to find its own psychic power completely unable to resist. Shocked, it looked at Red with astonishment and admiration, already imagining him as some anime character.

"Please allow me to offer you this grand salute, great Demon King of Sorcery!"

Once Abra had calmed down, Red released the restraint. To his surprise, Abra walked up to him, dropped to one knee, and performed a knight's salute.

"It seems you've earned this child's recognition," Sabrina congratulated, looking even happier than if she had received Abra's acknowledgment herself.

"Looks like my choice was the right one!"

Seeing that Sabrina and Red had no further developments, Lucci brought his wife forward again.

"Our family bonds with only one Abra in a lifetime. Even if separated by accident, we would never seek another partner. Thankfully you appeared in time, Red. Otherwise, I would've been quite troubled about this child's future," Lucci explained.

"Don't worry. Even though this kid's personality is unexpectedly adorable, I'll train Abra well!" Red promised.

Late at night, to soothe Abra's loneliness, Red released it alone and held it in his arms as they slept together. Nestled in Red's embrace, Abra did not struggle and was surprisingly quiet and obedient.

(So warm… Dad… Mom… I miss you…)

Just like that, Red and Abra gradually drifted into dreamland. The night passed without incident.

...

The next day

Ash, full of spirit, arrived at the Saffron City Gym with Pikachu, accompanied by his travel companions Misty and Brock.

After two days of training, Ash and Pikachu had figured out Alakazam's general weaknesses and planned to successfully obtain the Gold Badge from Uncle Lucci today.

"This confident Ash is the one I'm used to seeing," Brock laughed.

"Yeah. Even though he's usually reckless, he's surprisingly confident when it comes to battles!" Misty praised.

"Hey, Misty, are you complimenting me or insulting me?" Ash said helplessly.

The three entered the gym's battlefield. What greeted their eyes was a silver Abra, followed by Thousand-Year Gengar applying psychic pressure on it, while Red stood nearby giving training guidance.

"Are those all brother's Pokémon?" Ash exclaimed in surprise, quickly pulling out his trusty companion of knowledge—the Pokédex—and scanning Abra and Thousand-Year Gengar.

"Abra, the Psi Pokémon. It sleeps 18 hours a day. Even while asleep, it uses various psychic powers."

"Gengar, the Shadow Pokémon. If you suddenly feel a chill creeping up on you, that means Gengar is near. It may have already placed a curse on you."

"Whoa, it can cast curses?!" Ash said in fear, and Pikachu on his shoulder shivered.

"Relax. This guy isn't that malicious," Red explained.

"Exactly! Who even made up these Pokédex entries? It's pure slander! I'm always easygoing. When would I secretly curse someone?!"

Thousand-Year Gengar fumed. It had been helping train Abra nicely, yet somehow got wrongly accused by Ash out of nowhere.

(At most, I'd curse someone openly and honestly… hehehe…)

"It can talk?!" Ash, Misty, and Brock shouted in unison.

"Aren't you already used to Team Rocket's Meowth talking?" Red replied speechlessly. It's just talking—why get so excited?

"Come to think of it, we haven't run into Team Rocket these past two days?" Ash wondered, oddly sounding a bit nostalgic. After all, Team Rocket usually appeared daily, so their sudden absence felt strange.

Team Rocket's disappearance was thanks to Red. Whenever Red appeared alongside Ash's traveling group, the trio of Team Rocket would wisely grant themselves a holiday, enjoying well-funded vacations.

Sometimes, Jessie, James, and Meowth even wished Red would stay by Ash's side every day—so they'd have a reason to take comfortable breaks, feast well, and avoid the debt list that came after failed plans. It was pure enjoyment.
