Chapter 29 - A Throne of Bones

Piercing through the sounds of laughter, the sound of someone weeping reached Virat, calling out his name through sobs, "Virat... Virat, you've come. I was so scared here, but I am so happy that you came to rescue me." The voice sounded familiar to Virat; he whirled around instantly and saw Rishabh running towards him, crying. Rishabh ran and clung to Virat. Embracing him, Virat said, "How are you here? I thought we would never meet again." Standing before Virat and wiping his tears, Rishabh looked at the souls and devils in terror and spoke in a low voice, "Shiv is extremely powerful; look where he has imprisoned me." Just then, the old man approached Virat. Seeing him coming, Rishabh fearfully gripped Virat's hand tightly. The old man laughed and said in a calm voice, "He is your friend; no wonder I was wondering how he arrived here without your permission..."

Virat understood nothing and asked the old man, "What do you mean?" The old man laughed as he spoke, "This is no ordinary place. This is a dimension forged by the 'God of Death,' which is separate from the world despite being a part of it. The souls who could never find liberation and devils are kept here. But then everything changed; we lost our king, and since then, this has become a living, breathing hell." Virat understood nothing and simply nodded his head. Rishabh whispered into Virat's ear in a low voice, "This old man is insane; I don't know what nonsense he keeps rambling about. This must surely be one of Shiv's illusions; he keeps telling me that I am dead."

Virat looked at Rishabh; a wide smile spread across his face. Virat thought to himself, "I am sorry Rishabh, but you need to know the truth." Taking a deep breath, Virat looked at Rishabh and spoke in a calm voice, "Rishabh, you are indeed dead; he is telling the truth." Rishabh laughed, looked at the old man, and said, "See, I told y—" he stopped mid-sentence, the smile vanishing from his face. Terrified, he yelled, "Whaaaaaat... Virat, this is no time for jokes." He looked at Virat with eyes full of tears, but Virat stood silent. Wiping his tears, Rishabh calmed down and spoke in a heavy, quiet voice, "I already knew that I was dead, but I didn't want to accept it." Taking a long breath and forcing a fake smile onto his face, he said in a calm voice, "My only regret is that I couldn't tell Riyana how much I love her."

Hearing this, Virat was shocked and yelled loudly, "Whaaaaaat?" As soon as Virat shouted, all the souls vanished from the spot. Virat looked at Rishabh and asked, "You loved a girl?" Rishabh laughed and nodded his head. The old man interrupted, saying, "I haven't told you my name. I am your advisor, Shukracharya. You still have much to learn about this place." Virat looked at him and asked, "What... is there to learn? Is there still something left to know?"

Looking at Virat, Shukracharya bowed his head and said, "Before explaining everything, your coronation will take place. Come, let me lead you to the palace." Virat and Rishabh walked behind him. After crossing the parched forest, a massive palace built of black stone appeared before them, behind which stood a gargantuan black mountain with waterfalls of lava flowing down its sides. The entire palace shimmered with the glow of burning red torches. As soon as Virat stepped into the palace, he realized that it was many times larger than it had appeared from the outside. Seeing all this, Rishabh looked at Virat and said, "Virat, this is huge, but it is as terrifying as it is beautiful—these animal heads mounted on the walls and the red light." But Virat, without saying a word, walked toward the massive door made of black wood in front of them.

As Virat approached that massive door and placed his hand upon it, the door lit up with a red glow. The door opened on its own, revealing a colossal throne made of bones, with lava flowing behind it. In front, at a lower level, were five chairs made of black wood. Seeing all this, Rishabh thought to himself, "Mummy was right; this world is full of surprises. You just need to open your eyes and see." Virat felt himself being drawn toward the throne the moment he saw it. Behind him, Shukra (Shukracharya) and Rishabh followed. Virat went and sat upon the throne. Shukra pricked his thumb with his nail and anointed Virat's forehead with his blood. He then stood to Virat's left side. Rishabh, understanding nothing, stood to Virat's right. Virat had now become the King of the Underworld. Looking at Shukra with a smile, he asked, "Why are these chairs empty? To whom do they belong?"
