Chapter 31 - CHAPTER 30 — The Path That Should Not Exist

The fragment of light in Ayaka's palm pulsed again — faint, fragile, but undeniably alive. She held it close, feeling its warmth seep into her skin, into her heartbeat, into her breath. It was the only piece of Kaito left in the mortal world.

Hanzo sheathed his sword with a sharp click. "We need to move. Whatever realm he's trapped in… it won't stay stable forever."

Tsukihana nodded, gripping her staff. "The Ascendant Seal didn't destroy him. It elevated him. But elevation without anchoring is dangerous. He's drifting."

Ayaka looked up sharply. "Drifting where?"

Tsukihana hesitated. "Between realms. Between divinity and mortality. Between existence and… something new."

Ayaka closed her fingers around the fragment. "Then we find him before he slips too far."

Hanzo stepped beside her. "And how exactly do we do that? We don't even know what direction to walk."

Ayaka turned to Tsukihana. "You said the ley lines are healing. Can they guide us?"

Tsukihana shook her head. "Not yet. They're unstable. But there is one place where the boundary between realms is thin enough to sense him."

Ayaka's breath caught. "Where?"

Tsukihana looked toward the distant mountains, her expression grim.

"The Shrine of the First Dawn."

Hanzo swore under his breath. "That place is a myth."

Tsukihana met his gaze. "So was the Void."

Ayaka stepped forward. "What is it?"

Tsukihana's voice softened. "The oldest shrine in Japan. Built before the first kami took form. Before the first prayer was spoken. It sits on the seam between the mortal world and the celestial one."

Ayaka's heart pounded. "And Kaito…?"

Tsukihana nodded. "If he's anywhere, he's closest to that seam."

Hanzo crossed his arms. "There's a reason no one goes there. The path is cursed. The mountains shift. The forest eats travellers. The shrine moves."

Ayaka didn't flinch. "Then we move faster."

Hanzo stared at her for a long moment, then sighed. "You're impossible."

Ayaka wiped her tears with the back of her hand. "I learned from the best."

Tsukihana stepped forward, placing her hand over Ayaka's. "The fragment you hold… it's more than a piece of him. It's a guide. It will react when we're close."

Ayaka looked down at the faint glow. "Then let's go."

But before they could take a step—

The ground trembled.

Not violently.

Not like the Void's destruction.

But like something ancient shifting beneath the earth.

Hanzo drew his sword again. "What now…"

Tsukihana's eyes widened. "No… this energy… it's not hostile."

Ayaka felt it too — a warmth spreading through the air, brushing against her skin like a familiar hand.

The fragment in her palm pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Stronger.

Ayaka gasped. "Kaito…?"

A soft breeze swept across the cliff, carrying a whisper — faint, distant, but unmistakably his.

"Ayaka…"

Her knees weakened. "Kaito, I'm here. I'm listening."

The wind circled her, warm and gentle, lifting strands of her hair.

"Don't… stop…"

Ayaka's breath caught. "I won't. I promise."

The fragment glowed brighter, illuminating her face.

Hanzo stepped back, eyes wide. "He's reaching out."

Tsukihana whispered, "He's trying to anchor himself to her."

The wind trembled.

"Find… the… Dawn…"

Ayaka clutched the fragment to her chest. "We're going. Just hold on."

The wind faded.

The warmth faded.

The voice faded.

But the fragment continued to glow — brighter than before.

Ayaka stood tall, wiping her tears.

"Let's go."

Hanzo nodded. "To the Shrine of the First Dawn."

Tsukihana raised her staff. "The journey will be dangerous. The shrine rejects those who approach without purpose."

Ayaka looked at the glowing fragment.

"I have purpose."

She turned toward the mountains.

And far beyond the mortal world, in a realm of shifting light and half‑formed existence, Kaito reached toward her — barely holding onto himself, barely holding onto the world, but holding onto her.

Ayaka… don't stop…
