Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The boardroom trap

The emergency board meeting was scheduled for 8 PM.

Private. Mandatory. No remote attendance allowed.

If Marcus Reed was surprised by the sudden summons, he didn't show it.

At exactly 7:58 PM, he walked into Hale Group's executive boardroom with his usual composed expression. Impeccable suit. Calm eyes. A faint, polite smile.

Alexander was already seated at the head of the table.

Elena sat to his right.

Not behind him. Not in the corner.

Beside him.

Marcus noticed.

Interesting.

"Alexander," Marcus greeted smoothly. "I heard about the data breach. Unfortunate timing."

Alexander's gaze was steady. "Timing is exactly why we're here."

The other board members shifted uneasily.

The atmosphere felt wrong.

Too heavy.

"Before we begin," Alexander said calmly, "I'd like to address internal irregularities."

Marcus poured himself water. "By all means."

Alexander tapped the remote.

The large screen lit up.

Financial flow charts. Offshore accounts. Shell companies.

Marcus didn't react.

But his fingers tightened slightly around the glass.

"These transactions," Alexander continued evenly, "originated from a dissolved Hale subsidiary two years ago."

A murmur passed through the room.

Marcus leaned back. "And?"

"And they funded Lang Enterprises."

Silence.

Marcus tilted his head mildly. "Circumstantial."

Elena spoke for the first time.

"Is it also circumstantial that the subsidiary was dissolved under Alexander's executive seal while he was in a coma?"

Every eye turned to Marcus.

He gave a small, controlled smile.

"You're implying forgery?"

Alexander's voice was ice. "I'm stating it."

Marcus set his glass down slowly.

"Careful, Alexander. Accusations without proof damage credibility."

Alexander's gaze didn't waver.

"Good thing I brought proof."

Another click.

The screen shifted.

Security access logs.

Biometric entry records.

Timestamp: The night before the subsidiary was dissolved.

Location: Executive authorization office.

Marcus Reed's fingerprint authentication.

The room went dead silent.

Marcus's calm façade cracked — just slightly.

"That proves I entered your office," he said smoothly. "Not that I altered anything."

Elena leaned forward.

"You accessed his secure terminal at 2:14 AM. Thirty-seven minutes later, the digital seal authorized dissolution."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"You had motive," Alexander said evenly. "The merger plan you opposed. The restructuring that reduced your influence."

Marcus laughed softly.

"So this is about ego."

"No," Alexander replied quietly. "It's about betrayal."

For the first time, Marcus's tone sharpened.

"You built this empire on ruthlessness, Alexander. Don't pretend morality now."

"I built it on loyalty," Alexander corrected.

Marcus stood slowly.

"If you think this little presentation will remove me, you're mistaken. I still hold significant shares."

Alexander didn't move.

"Not anymore."

The door behind Marcus opened.

Corporate legal counsel entered — along with two federal financial investigators.

Marcus's eyes flashed.

"What is this?"

Alexander's voice remained calm.

"You transferred a large portion of your shares this morning."

Marcus's breath stalled — just barely.

"You thought we wouldn't notice," Elena said quietly. "You were preparing to disappear after the merger collapse."

One of the investigators stepped forward.

"Marcus Reed, we have sufficient evidence to detain you under suspicion of corporate fraud, financial manipulation, and conspiracy."

The word conspiracy echoed.

Marcus's gaze flicked toward Alexander.

"You think this ends Victor?"

Alexander stood slowly now.

"No," he said softly. "But it ends you."

Marcus's mask finally fell.

"You're too late," he said coldly. "The press conference proceeds tomorrow. The fabricated evidence is already prepared."

Alexander's expression didn't change.

"Yes."

Marcus blinked.

"Yes?" he repeated.

Alexander stepped closer.

"We let it proceed."

Marcus frowned slightly.

"You… what?"

Elena's voice was calm and steady.

"Victor is about to publicly present falsified documents."

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"And?"

"And we've already alerted financial crime authorities."

Realization began creeping into Marcus's expression.

Alexander finished it for him.

"The moment he presents forged evidence on live broadcast…"

"…he commits federal fraud," Elena completed.

Marcus went still.

"You're baiting him."

Alexander's gaze hardened.

"He wanted a stage."

Silence thickened.

Marcus's confidence finally cracked completely.

"You're gambling," he muttered.

"No," Alexander replied quietly. "We're calculating."

The investigators stepped forward and secured Marcus's hands.

As they led him out, he turned once more.

"You think Victor won't retaliate?"

Alexander's voice was dangerously calm.

"I hope he does."

The doors closed.

The room exhaled collectively.

Elena's pulse was still racing.

"One down," she whispered.

Alexander looked at her.

"Yes."

"But Victor knows."

"Good," he said softly.

Her eyes searched his.

"You're not worried?"

"I am," he admitted. "Which is why tomorrow ends this."

She stepped closer.

"What if he escalates again?"

He reached for her hand — firm, steady.

"Then this time…"

His eyes darkened with promise.

"…we don't just defend."

Across town, inside a dimly lit penthouse, Victor Lang watched security footage from the estate on his monitor.

He smiled faintly.

Marcus's arrest alert flashed on his phone.

Victor didn't look surprised.

Instead, he exhaled slowly.

"So you moved faster than I expected."

He stood, walking toward the window overlooking the city.

"Good."

His assistant hesitated nearby. "Sir… the press conference?"

Victor's smile sharpened.

"We proceed."

"But Marcus—"

"Was expendable."

He picked up a remote and turned on the television.

Tomorrow's headline preview scrolled across the screen.

Victor's reflection stared back at him.

"You want war, Alexander?"

His voice dropped into a whisper.

"You'll have it."

He picked up another phone.

This one different.

Unregistered.

He dialed.

The line connected.

"Prepare the alternative leverage," he said calmly.

A pause.

"Yes," he continued.

"If corporate pressure fails…"

His eyes hardened.

"We move to personal."

And somewhere in the city—

A black vehicle engine started quietly in the dark.

To be continued…
