Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: After the storm

The shareholders' hall slowly emptied.

Investors whispered in small groups as they walked out, the tension of the past weeks finally dissolving. The reporters outside were already shouting questions, desperate for the story that had just unfolded.

But inside the hall, only a few people remained.

Alexander stood near the window overlooking the city. The skyline stretched endlessly, the empire he had fought to protect standing tall beneath the afternoon sun.

Elena approached quietly.

"It's strange," she said softly.

Alexander glanced at her. "What is?"

"After everything… it's suddenly quiet."

For weeks, every moment had been a battle. Every conversation had carried the weight of power, betrayal, or survival.

Now there was silence.

Alexander took her hand gently.

"We earned the quiet."

Before Elena could respond, heels echoed across the marble floor.

Catherine Hale.

She walked toward them with her usual calm confidence.

"Elena," she said with a small nod. "Congratulations."

Elena blinked in surprise.

"Thank you."

Catherine's gaze briefly dropped to Elena's stomach before returning to Alexander.

"The board will issue a statement within the hour," she said. "Marcus Vance will be formally removed from all shareholder negotiations."

Alexander crossed his arms.

"You're certain he's finished?"

Catherine smiled faintly.

"No one like Marcus is ever completely finished."

Elena felt a chill at those words.

"But his leverage is gone," Catherine continued. "Without investors backing him, he's merely a man with ambition."

Alexander studied his mother carefully.

"You orchestrated most of this."

"I accelerated the inevitable," she corrected.

There was a brief pause between them.

Then Catherine did something unexpected.

She turned to Elena.

"You handled today well."

Elena wasn't sure how to respond. A compliment from Catherine Hale felt like rare currency.

"Thank you," she said carefully.

Catherine nodded once, then stepped closer to Alexander.

"The company is stable again," she said quietly. "Don't waste this opportunity."

Alexander met her gaze.

"I won't."

For a moment, something almost warm passed between them. Not quite reconciliation—but respect.

Then Catherine turned and walked away.

Just like that.

Elena exhaled slowly.

"Your mother is terrifying."

Alexander chuckled softly.

"That's the nicest thing anyone has ever said about her."

They stood in silence for a moment before Elena looked up at him.

"So what happens now?"

Alexander thought for a moment.

"The board will calm the market."

"The investors will stabilize."

"And Marcus?" she asked.

Alexander's expression darkened slightly.

"He'll regroup."

Elena sighed.

"I was afraid you'd say that."

"But this time," Alexander added, gently placing his hand over hers on her stomach, "he'll be fighting a united family."

Elena smiled faintly.

"Our child already saved a billion-dollar company before even being born."

Alexander smirked.

"High expectations."

They walked toward the exit together.

Outside, the reporters immediately began shouting.

"Mr. Hale! Did you win the vote?"

"Is Hale Enterprises stable again?"

"Who owns the company now?"

Alexander stopped briefly before getting into the car.

He looked directly at the cameras.

"Hale Enterprises remains exactly where it belongs," he said calmly.

"With the Hale family."

Elena slipped into the seat beside him as the doors closed.

As the car pulled away, she leaned back and sighed.

"For the first time in a long time," she said, "I feel like we can breathe."

Alexander reached for her hand.

"Yes."

But as he looked out the window toward the city skyline, one thought lingered in the back of his mind.

Marcus Vance had lost the battle.

But men like him rarely accepted defeat quietly.

And somewhere in the city—

Someone was already planning the next move.
