Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: The First strike

The night had deepened, and a restless wind stirred through the trees surrounding the Hale estate. Inside, Alexander and Elena remained in the study, their eyes locked on the security monitors that lined one wall. Every flicker of movement outside made them tense.

"This is getting out of hand," Elena whispered, her hand resting protectively over her stomach.

Alexander didn't answer immediately. He studied the monitors, noting every shadow, every car that moved slowly along the perimeter.

"Marcus isn't just testing us," he said finally. "He's probing for weaknesses. He wants to know what he can attack first."

Elena's stomach tightened. "And if he finds one?"

Alexander's jaw set. "Then we'll deal with it before it becomes a threat. He won't get near us."

A sudden beep from one of the monitors made them both turn sharply.

Two dark SUVs had stopped just beyond the estate gates. The headlights were dimmed, but the vehicles were clearly there.

"Security?" Alexander barked into his earpiece.

"Sir, they haven't attempted entry yet," came the quick response.

Alexander exhaled sharply. "Keep eyes on them. Do not engage. Not yet."

Elena stepped closer to him, sensing the storm that was about to hit. "He's testing us," she said.

"Yes," Alexander said, his gaze unwavering. "And tonight, we strike back. But carefully."

Just as he finished speaking, the front door's alarm blared. The sound was sharp, cutting through the tense silence.

Alexander's eyes narrowed. "They're in."

Elena's hand tightened on his arm. "How? The security is—"

"They knew exactly where to breach," Alexander interrupted. His mind was already calculating, planning, adjusting. "Marcus isn't reckless. He sent professionals. People trained to bypass alarms."

Footsteps echoed in the foyer. A shadow moved across the monitors, then another.

Alexander stepped in front of Elena. "Stay behind me."

The lights in the hallway flickered.

A voice called out from the shadows. Calm. Taunting.

"Alexander Hale."

Marcus Vance stepped into the light, flanked by two large men. His usual arrogance was amplified tonight.

"You thought winning the board vote meant the war was over?" Marcus asked, his grin cold. "You were wrong."

Alexander's hands clenched at his sides. "Marcus. This ends tonight."

Marcus laughed. "It ends when I say it does."

Elena felt a chill as Marcus's gaze flicked toward her.

"And you," Marcus said, smirking, "aren't going to make this easy for me. Are you carrying my heir, or are you just in my way?"

Alexander's eyes darkened as he took a step forward. "You'll never touch her. You'll never touch our child."

Marcus tilted his head, still grinning. "We'll see about that."

A sudden movement from the side caught Elena's attention—one of Marcus's men was reaching for a device on the floor, and the sound of a faint electronic beep made her stomach sink.

Alexander lunged forward, tackling the man and tossing him aside.

Marcus froze for a moment, assessing Alexander with a sharp, calculating stare.

"You've gotten stronger," Marcus said slowly. "But so have I."

The tension in the room exploded into chaos.

Security sirens blared outside. The professionals Marcus had brought were well-trained, but Alexander was faster, sharper, and determined to protect his family.

Elena clung to him as he moved, his every action precise, protective, and deadly.

By the time the first responders arrived, Marcus and his men were gone. The estate had been tested, boundaries crossed—but no permanent harm was done.

Alexander turned toward Elena, breathing heavily. His dark eyes met hers.

"They're coming back," he said simply.

Elena swallowed hard, feeling the weight of their reality settle over her. "How do we stop him?"

Alexander placed a hand gently over hers, over her stomach. "We don't just stop him. We finish this. And this time… there will be no mistakes."

Outside, the city lights glimmered innocently, unaware that the war for Hale Enterprises—and for Elena and the child—had only just begun.
