Chapter 47 - Chapter 47: The counterattack

Morning arrived slowly over the city, but peace did not follow.

Inside the Hale estate, the atmosphere was tense.

Elena Hale sat at the breakfast table, staring at the untouched cup of tea in front of her. The sun streamed through the tall windows, but it did little to ease the heaviness in her chest.

She had barely slept.

Every sound during the night had made her uneasy.

Across the room, the television quietly played the morning financial news.

"Breaking news this morning," the reporter said, "federal investigators have opened a formal inquiry into financial activity connected to Vance Holdings. Sources suggest the investigation could involve multiple offshore transactions tied to businessman Marcus Vance."

Elena's eyes lifted toward the screen.

The war had officially become public.

Just then, footsteps echoed from the hallway.

Alexander Hale entered the dining room, already dressed for the day. His expression was composed, but Elena could immediately see the exhaustion behind his eyes.

"You should be resting," he said when he noticed her awake.

Elena gave a small smile.

"I could say the same thing to you."

Alexander walked over and sat beside her.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Elena asked quietly, "Did it work?"

Alexander leaned back slightly.

"Yes."

She frowned.

"But?"

Alexander sighed.

"Marcus expected a move from me eventually."

Elena's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

"So he's preparing something."

Alexander nodded once.

"He won't sit quietly while investigators tear through his finances."

Before Elena could ask more, Alexander's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen and answered immediately.

"Yes?"

The voice on the other end spoke quickly.

Alexander's expression hardened with every passing second.

"What happened?" he asked.

A pause.

Then his voice turned sharp.

"When?"

Another pause.

Alexander ended the call slowly.

Elena's heart began to race.

"What is it?"

Alexander looked at her.

"Marcus just responded."

Elena's stomach dropped.

"How?"

Alexander turned on the television and switched the channel.

Every news station was showing the same headline.

Hale Enterprises Stock Under Investigation.

Elena's eyes widened.

"What?"

The news anchor continued speaking.

"Breaking reports claim that financial irregularities may exist within Hale Enterprises during the previous administration. Anonymous sources say investigators are reviewing whether company leadership—particularly CEO Alexander Hale—may have been aware of the activity."

Elena stared at the screen in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"He's trying to drag the company down with him."

Elena shook her head.

"But you just got the company back."

"Exactly," Alexander said coldly.

Marcus Vance couldn't stop the investigation.

So instead—

He redirected it.

If Hale Enterprises became part of the scandal, investors would panic.

The board would panic.

And Alexander's control would weaken.

Elena looked at him with concern.

"What happens now?"

Alexander stood slowly.

His mind was already moving ahead.

"Now we prove Marcus fabricated the evidence."

"And if we can't?" Elena asked quietly.

Alexander looked directly at her.

"We will."

Elena noticed something in his expression then.

Something determined.

Dangerous.

Marcus had started another battle.

But this time—

Alexander wasn't just protecting his family.

He was protecting his entire empire.

Across the city, inside his penthouse office, Marcus Vance watched the same news broadcast.

A satisfied smile spread across his face.

"You see?" he said to the man standing beside him.

"Alexander Hale thinks he's the hunter."

Marcus lifted his glass of whiskey.

"But every hunter eventually walks into a trap."

On the television screen, reporters continued discussing the growing scandal surrounding Hale Enterprises.

The investigation had only begun.

And if Marcus succeeded—

Alexander Hale might lose everything he had just fought to reclaim.
