Chapter 50 - Chapter 50: The public war

The press conference hall at Hale Enterprises headquarters was packed.

Reporters filled every seat while camera crews crowded the aisles. The tension in the room was thick with anticipation. Ever since the investigation headlines broke that morning, the entire financial world had been waiting for one man to speak.

At exactly two o'clock, the doors at the side of the stage opened.

Alexander Hale walked in.

He moved calmly toward the podium, his expression controlled, his posture confident. Behind him stood several executives and legal advisors, including his mother, Catherine Hale.

Camera flashes exploded across the room.

The reporters immediately began shouting questions.

"Mr. Hale, did you authorize the financial transactions under investigation?"

"Are you responsible for the irregularities reported this morning?"

"Is Hale Enterprises facing federal charges?"

Alexander raised a hand.

The room slowly quieted.

"Thank you for coming," he began.

His voice was steady, carrying clearly across the hall.

"I'm aware that the past twenty-four hours have created concern among our investors and the public."

A reporter interrupted loudly.

"Because your company is under investigation!"

Alexander didn't react.

"Yes," he said calmly.

"There is an investigation."

Murmurs spread through the crowd.

"But the public deserves to know why that investigation exists."

Alexander nodded slightly toward one of the screens behind him.

"Show them."

The large display flickered to life.

Documents appeared.

Transaction records.

Company ownership charts.

Alexander continued speaking.

"Earlier today, anonymous reports were submitted to federal investigators accusing Hale Enterprises of financial misconduct."

He paused briefly.

"What those reports failed to mention… is where the information actually came from."

Another set of documents appeared on the screen.

This time, the name Marcus Vance appeared in multiple financial connections.

Gasps spread through the audience.

Alexander continued.

"These records show that the anonymous complaint was filed through a financial server linked to a shell corporation secretly controlled by Marcus Vance."

The room erupted with shouting reporters.

"Are you accusing Marcus Vance of fraud?"

"Do you have proof he fabricated the investigation?"

Alexander raised his hand again.

"My legal team has already submitted these documents to federal authorities."

He looked directly into the cameras.

"This investigation should not be focused on Hale Enterprises."

His voice hardened slightly.

"It should be focused on the man who created it."

Across the city, inside his penthouse office, Marcus Vance watched the broadcast on a massive television screen.

His expression remained calm, though the man standing beside him looked far more nervous.

"Sir… this could become a serious legal problem."

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he poured himself another drink.

On the television, reporters were still shouting questions at Alexander.

"Marcus Vance denies these accusations!" one journalist said.

Marcus chuckled quietly.

"Of course I do."

He sat down slowly.

"Alexander thinks exposing me will end this."

The assistant frowned.

"Won't it?"

Marcus took a slow sip of whiskey.

"No."

He turned his gaze back to the television.

Alexander stood confidently before the press, defending his company.

Marcus smiled faintly.

"Because Alexander Hale just made a mistake."

The assistant looked confused.

"What mistake?"

Marcus set his glass down.

"He turned a private war…"

His eyes gleamed slightly.

"…into a public one."

Back at the press conference, Alexander finished answering another question when his phone vibrated in his pocket.

He ignored it.

But a moment later Catherine stepped closer to him and whispered quietly.

"Alexander."

He glanced toward her.

Her expression had changed.

"What is it?" he asked under his breath.

Catherine lowered her voice even more.

"Marcus just released something."

Alexander frowned.

"What?"

Catherine handed him her phone.

Alexander looked at the screen.

And for the first time during the entire press conference—

His expression shifted.

Because the headline on the screen read:

BREAKING: Private medical records of Elena Hale leaked online.

The room around him continued buzzing with reporters.

But suddenly, the war had taken a far more personal turn.
