CHAPTER 16 — The Last Piece
The city was a graveyard of broken ambitions.
Shen Jinhai was no longer in his glass office. He was hiding in a sub-basement bunker beneath a defunct textile mill in District North. In front of him, dozens of monitors flickered with grainy CCTV feeds, showing the empty corridors of his dying empire.
"Where are they?" Jinhai barked at his last remaining enforcer.
"Zhen Group is dark, Sir. And the Golden Crown has been locked down. No one is coming in or out," the guard reported, his voice trembling as he checked the perimeter sensors.
Jinhai stared at the screen. A camera angle in the alleyway outside the mill flickered. Two figures emerged from the shadows. They weren't hiding. They were walking side-by-side down the center of the rain-slicked road, illuminated by a single, buzzing streetlamp.
Li Zheng Yuan in his perfectly tailored charcoal suit, and Gu Wei Chen in his rugged leather jacket.
"They're here," Jinhai whispered, his pulse hammering against his throat. "Seal the vault!"
Inside the mill, the air smelled of machine oil and old dust. Li Zheng Yuan stopped in front of the reinforced steel door. He didn't look for a keypad or a handle. He looked at Gu Wei Chen.
"Do you have the codes?" Zheng Yuan asked. His voice was a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate in the very floorboards.
Wei Chen pulled a small device from his pocket—Xu Kai's masterwork. "I have something better. I have the override."
With a heavy hydraulic hiss, the vault door groaned and swung open, revealing the path to the man who thought he could play God.
CHAPTER 17 — The Final Dialogue
The bunker was unnaturally cold, the air filtered through machines that hummed like a heartbeat. Shen Jinhai stood behind a heavy oak desk, clutching a small silver pistol with white-knuckled hands.
"Stay back! I have the files! I'll leak them to every news agency in Asia!" Jinhai threatened, waving a tablet. "I'll tell them you're insane, Zheng Yuan! I'll tell them you're a murderer!"
Li Zheng Yuan didn't stop. He walked with a slow, rhythmic pace until the barrel of the gun was pressed directly against his chest, right over his heart.
"Do it," Zheng Yuan whispered.
Jinhai's finger froze on the trigger. He looked into Zheng Yuan's eyes and saw nothing. No fear. No anger. Just a vast, cold vacuum. "You're a monster. You killed them all. You're not the man the public loves."
"The man the public loves died a long time ago, Chairman," Zheng Yuan replied. His eyes were void of any human warmth—a shade of terrifying, bottomless black. "And the monster? He doesn't care about the news."
Gu Wei Chen leaned against the doorframe, casually lighting a cigarette. The smoke curled around his head like a dark halo. "He's right, Jinhai. You're playing for a crowd that isn't sitting in the theater anymore. The show is over."
Zheng Yuan's hand moved faster than a strike of lightning. He disarmed Jinhai with a sickening crack of bone. The pistol clattered uselessly to the floor.
"You touched Chen Rui," Zheng Yuan said, his voice dropping to a frequency that felt like a physical weight.
Break him, the voice in his head commanded.
Zheng Yuan didn't hesitate. Jinhai's scream echoed through the bunker, but the thick concrete walls ensured it was a secret kept by the earth itself.
CHAPTER 18 — Absolute Silence
One hour later.
The two men emerged from the textile mill. The sun was beginning to bleed over the Shanghai skyline, painting the clouds in bruised shades of purple and gold. The air felt clean, washed by the midnight rain.
Li Zheng Yuan wiped a small smudge of blood from his cheek with a silk handkerchief. He looked... refreshed. Completely composed. Not a single hair out of place.
"What now?" Gu Wei Chen asked, looking at the man who was no longer just a CEO, but something far more primal.
Zheng Yuan looked at the horizon. "Shen Jinhai is gone. His empire will be absorbed by Zhen Group by noon. The police will find his 'confession' for the warehouse fire and the tax evasion. It's a clean slate."
"And the bodies?"
Zheng Yuan turned to Wei Chen. A genuine, hauntingly calm smile touched his lips. "What bodies, Wei Chen? Shadows don't leave corpses."
Gu Wei Chen laughed—a dark, melodic sound. He reached out and gripped Zheng Yuan's shoulder, a gesture of dark brotherhood. "I think this is the beginning of a very beautiful nightmare."
Li Zheng Yuan nodded.
Inside his head, for the first time in years, there was perfect, absolute silence. The "Voice" wasn't talking anymore. It didn't need to. They were finally the same person.
The hunt was over. The reign had begun.
