Chapter 31 - Chapter 30: Day 3 – Truth or Dare by the Bonfire

The third day on Haven Bay Island had been long and beautiful.

After the morning hike to the lighthouse and a picnic at the viewpoint, the group returned to the beach tired but content.

The sun had left a warm glow on everyone's skin, and the salt air clung to their clothes.

By evening, the school had set up a large bonfire on the sand, logs arranged in a wide circle with blankets and towels scattered around for seating.

Jade, Rose, Maya, and Noah claimed a spot close enough to feel the heat but far enough from the loudest clusters of students.

Maya had already declared herself the official snack distributor, passing around bags of chips and marshmallows.

Noah sat with his sketchbook balanced on his knees, occasionally drawing quick lines of the flames or the silhouettes around the fire.

Rose sat beside Jade, knees drawn up under a shared blanket.

Their shoulders touched comfortably now — a quiet habit that had formed over the past few days.

The firelight danced across Rose's face, softening her features and turning her eyes a warm amber.

Maya stretched her legs out toward the fire.

"Okay, since we're all nice and toasty… who's up for Truth or Dare?

Nothing too crazy though,

Just enough to make it interesting."

Noah glanced up from his sketch.

"I'm in.

But I reserve the right to pass on anything involving singing."

Maya grinned.

"Deal.

Jade, you start."

The game began lightly, the kind of easy fun that made everyone laugh.

Maya was dared to do her best impression of their grumpy history teacher — she nailed the gruff voice and everyone burst out laughing.

Noah chose truth and admitted he still slept with a nightlight because he hated complete darkness.

Rose picked truth and quietly shared that her favourite colour was lavender because it reminded her of calm mornings.

Jade was dared to sing one line from any song — she chose a soft, simple melody she had been working on, her voice low and warm.

The group went quiet for a moment after she finished, clearly impressed.

The turns continued.

Some were funny — Maya had to eat a marshmallow with hot sauce , she dramatically gagged while Rose laughed behind her hand.

Some were light — Noah revealed he secretly loved romantic comedies but pretended to be too cool for them.

Then it was Jade's turn again.

Maya's eyes sparkled with mischief.

"Truth or Dare?"

Jade considered for a second.

"Dare."

Maya leaned forward, grinning.

"I dare you to kiss on the cheek the person sitting to your right."

The circle went still.

Jade's right was none other but Rose.

The fire crackled.

A few nearby students who had been half-listening turned their heads.

Maya bit her lip, clearly delighted but trying not to push too hard.

Noah stayed quiet, watching with gentle curiosity.

Jade turned her head slowly toward Rose.

Their eyes met.

Rose's cheeks were already flushed from the fire, but now a deeper pink spread across them.

She didn't look away.

Instead, she gave the tiniest nod — almost imperceptible, but there.

Jade's heart beat loud in her ears.

She leaned in carefully, giving Rose plenty of time to pull back if she wanted.

Rose stayed still.

Jade pressed her lips gently to Rose's cheek — soft, warm, lingering just a second longer than a casual kiss would.

Rose's skin was warm from the fire.

The moment felt impossibly tender, like the whole world had narrowed to that single point of contact.

When Jade pulled back, their faces were still close.

Rose's eyes were wide, lips slightly parted.

A small, shy smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.

Maya let out a soft "Awwwww" while Noah smiled quietly behind his sketchbook.

A couple of nearby students clapped lightly and whispered among themselves.

Rose touched her cheek where Jade had kissed her, as if checking it was real.

She looked at Jade — something soft and wondering in her gaze — but said nothing.

Jade felt her own face burning, but she couldn't stop the small, happy smile that formed.

The game continued after that, but the energy had shifted.

The laughter was still there, but underneath it was a new warmth, a quiet awareness between Jade and Rose.

Later, when the fire had burned lower and most students had started heading back to the cabins, the four of them stayed a little longer.

Maya and Noah eventually wandered off to look for more driftwood, leaving Jade and Rose alone by the glowing embers.

Rose turned to Jade, voice barely above a whisper.

"That was… nice."

Jade met her eyes.

"Yeah.

It was."

They sat in comfortable silence after that, shoulders pressed together under the blanket, watching the last flames flicker.

The ocean whispered in the background.

The stars stretched wide above them.

Neither of them named what had just happened.

They didn't need to.

The kiss on the cheek had been simple.

But in the quiet space between them, it felt like something much bigger had begun to take root.
