Was he still waiting? Was he still looking toward the horizon, wondering when — or if — she would return?.
She closed her eyes and imagined his face, the warmth of his gaze, the way his voice softened only for her. That memory alone was enough to make her chest ache with longing. She wanted to see him. To stand beside him. To know if he was truly alright.
But with that ache came other memories — darker ones.
