Practically leaping out of bed, I could have screamed as I woke up. Panicked, I assessed myself, but I was as dry as when I had gone to sleep. I was wearing the same oversized cotton shirt, and as I ran feverish hands through my hair, I found it completely dry.
My gaze snagged on Cheese, who slept exactly where I had left him when I first closed my eyes. The room had not been changed; my bed was just a little ruffled, not at all like I had been abducted from it. With each breath, my heart slammed against my ribs hard enough to bruise. I clutched my chest, taking a deep breath only for my lungs to sting.
The sensation hit me so hard I choked on the air, hacking through coughs that woke Cheese up. He promptly came to my side, his paw rubbing me with the intention to soothe.
I am okay, I wanted to assure him, but was I?
