Rage seared through my veins, the air heavy with a tension that weighed as much as lead. I had a lot more to say, but I bit off my retort.
She had blanched, her clenched fist shaking, but it made no difference. I had told no lies. Kaleb had been right—she should have been grateful that a god would look upon her as something more than a speck in the universe.
I had let myself get carried away, sunk myself down to her level just to reach her, only for her to reject me.
How dare she?! I howled in my mind.
Karn bristled at the rejection, speaking not a word into my tremulous mind.
The training had been completed anyway, so I turned away from her still-trembling, pathetic form, even if my stomach rolled at the thought of me leaving her behind like that. My treacherous system would not sway me this time.
An ear-shattering alarm spoilt the air and drenched the room in red blinking lights, which meant one thing.
Another core had been found.
