The Core pulsed in my chest, and I couldn't tell if it was confirmation or denial. Sonya's eyes were wet now, though no tears fell.
"So when you ask me why I did all this," she said quietly, "it's because I was promised everything. And I got nothing."
She stood abruptly, wiping her hands on her dress one final time. "That's all I know," she said. "That's all I can tell you."
She turned to leave, then paused at the door. "For what it's worth," she said without looking back, "I'm sorry—not for what I did, but for believing it would work. I was such a fucking fool."
And then she was gone.
Leaving me alone with Cheese and the Core pulsing in my chest and the knowledge that Sylpha had orchestrated everything. The numbness in my chest spread until it engulfed everything.
"Sylpha?" I called, and even my internal voice quivered.
She did not hide in the little nook where she resided in my head. "Yes, Aurora?" she replied.
