Chapter Fourteen
A Quiet Arrival
France welcomed new students again that autumn.
At the university gates, Xavier Matthew stood with admission papers in hand.
Law.
He had chosen it not for prestige — but for unfinished history.
His uncle adjusted his spectacles beside him.
"Study well," he said calmly. "Knowledge is stronger than anger."
Xavier nodded.
He was not loud.
Not overly expressive.
But there was something steady in him.
That same week, another carriage arrived in town.
Daniel Wilson stepped down, no royal announcement this time.
He had chosen to study abroad without heavy ceremony.
He wanted independence.
Law school registration was quick. Efficient.
He did not yet know that only a few streets away—
Clare was walking to high school with Noah, Jack, and Alice.
Meanwhile — At Noah's Café
It was late afternoon.
The trio — now foursome — sat around their usual table.
Books open. Arguments louder than necessary.
Jack leaned back dramatically.
"If I fail mathematics, I blame all of you."
"You fail because you talk too much," Noah replied.
Alice corrected a line in her notebook quietly.
Clare watched them with a soft smile.
The café door opened.
A tall young man stepped in.
Simple clothes. Calm presence.
He approached the counter first, speaking politely to Noah's mother.
"I just moved here," he said. "My uncle was transferred to the university."
Noah's mother smiled warmly. "Welcome. You must be Xavier."
He nodded.
She pointed toward the table. "My daughter is there. She knows everyone in town."
Xavier turned.
Four students looked up at the same time.
Jack spoke first. "You look like a law student."
Xavier blinked. "I am."
"Ha," Jack said proudly. "I guessed right."
Noah stood up. "You're the professor's nephew, right?"
"Yes."
"You can sit," Clare said gently, moving her books slightly.
Xavier hesitated only a moment before sitting.
At first, he only observed.
Jack's loud commentary.
Noah's confident replies.
Alice's quiet intelligence.
Clare's calm balance.
They explained their school system to him.
He explained university briefly.
"You're in law?" Alice asked, suddenly interested.
"Yes."
"Is it difficult?" she asked.
"It depends on what you want from it," Xavier replied.
That answer made her think.
Over the next few days, Xavier began stopping by the café more often.
Sometimes to read.
Sometimes to listen.
Jack liked debating random topics with him.
Noah enjoyed challenging his opinions.
Clare noticed he spoke less — but listened more.
Alice noticed something else:
He spoke seriously.
Purposefully.
Unlike Jack's playful tone.
Unlike Noah's confident energy.
Different.
Very different.
At the University
Daniel attended his first law lecture.
Large hall.
Dozens of students.
Among them—
Xavier Matthew.
They did not speak that day.
But they noticed each other.
Two young men with steady eyes.
Both carrying quiet weight.
Neither aware that their lives were already connected through someone else.
