Chapter 28 - The Sweetest Surprise

Chapter Twenty-Eight

The Sweetest Surprise

Winter had finally arrived in the town.

The air smelled of roasted coffee beans almost every morning, drifting from Noah's café into the narrow streets.

Noah's father Antoine Nehemiah, had been working harder than usual.

Every day before sunrise he would leave with a large sack on his shoulder, traveling to nearby towns and mountain paths to gather the best coffee beans.

By the time he returned, the sun would already be setting.

Clare watched him one evening from the café window.

"He works too much," she said softly.

Emma nodded quietly while wiping the wooden counter.

"He always has," she replied.

Jack leaned against the wall with crossed arms.

"Well… maybe we should make him stop working for one day."

Noah raised an eyebrow. "And how exactly do you plan to do that?"

Jack grinned.

"We surprise him."

Daniel looked interested. "A celebration?"

Clare's eyes lit up immediately.

"A birthday celebration!"

Emma paused for a moment.

Then slowly… she smiled.

"That might actually make him happy."

The Secret Plan

The next few days became a whirlwind of secret activity.

There was an unused room in Noah's house that had been empty for years.

Jack and Daniel cleaned the dust and old furniture.

Clare and Noah decorated the walls with ribbons, candles, and small paper flowers.

Emma quietly visited neighbors and relatives, inviting them personally.

"Don't tell him," she reminded everyone with a playful smile.

"Not a word."

Even Aunt Laura and Uncle Martin received the invitation.

When they heard about the plan, Laura laughed warmly.

"Of course we'll come. Clare helped plan this, didn't she?"

Beside them, Clausius Martin folded his arms thoughtfully.

"A surprise party and a mysterious dessert," he said. "Now I'm curious."

Meanwhile, the most important task remained.

The cake.

In the café kitchen, the trio carefully prepared their strange new invention again.

Flour.

Milk.

Butter.

Sugar.

And of course—

Jack proudly added vanilla seeds.

"Signature ingredient," he declared.

Noah rolled her eyes.

Clare gently spread the blueberry jam over the top once the cake cooled.

The sweet smell filled the entire café.

Daniel tasted a small piece.

His eyes widened slightly.

"This might be the best accident in history."

Jack puffed his chest proudly.

"Of course it is."

The Birthday Night

On the evening of Noah's father's birthday, the house remained strangely quiet.

When Antoine returned home tired from work, brushing snow from his coat.

"Emma?" he called.

The lights were dim.

The house seemed empty.

Confused, he walked toward the unused room.

The door opened.

Suddenly—

"Surprise!"

The room burst into laughter and cheers.

Friends.

Relatives.

Neighbors.

Almost the entire town had gathered inside.

Among them stood Aunt Laura, Uncle Martin, and Clausius, smiling proudly near the back of the room.

Noah's father froze in shock.

"You… all of you…"

Emma walked toward him with a warm smile.

"You work every day for everyone else," she said gently.

"So today… everyone celebrates you."

His eyes glistened slightly.

Then Noah stepped forward carefully holding something.

The cake.

"Happy birthday papa!",noah told delightfully folding the cake ,

The blueberry jam on top shone under the candlelight.

The room grew curious.

"What is that?" someone asked.

Clare exchanged a quick glance with Jack and Noah.

Jack cleared his throat proudly.

"This… is called a cake."

The crowd looked puzzled.

"A what?"

"A cake," Jack repeated confidently.

"Today we cut it to celebrate a birthday."

Daniel handed Noah's father a knife.

"Then you should be the first."

With a small laugh and still shaking his head in disbelief, he cut the soft dessert.

Slices were passed around the room.

People tasted it slowly.

Then—

Expressions changed.

Eyes widened.

"This is wonderful!"

"What is inside this?"

"Is it bread?"

"No… it's softer!"

Even Aunt Laura covered her mouth in surprise.

"Clare, this is delicious!"

Uncle Martin nodded thoughtfully.

"If you sell this in the café, the whole town will come."

Clausius took another bite and smirked slightly.

"Well done," he admitted.

The room filled with excited chatter.

People began asking if they could buy it for their own families.

Some suggested different flavors.

Vanilla.

Coffee.

Fruit.

Jack leaned toward Noah and whispered proudly,

"We just changed dessert forever."

And just like that—

The small café became famous for something completely new.

The first birthday cake.

In the middle of the celebration, Noah's father looked around the room.

Clare.

Noah.

Jack.

Daniel.

Emma.

And the many friends and family gathered together.

For the first time in years, he felt something simple but powerful.

Pride.
