Chapter 36 - The Semester Exams

Chapter Thirty-Six

The Semester Exams

Winter settled gently over the town as the semester slowly came to its end.

Snow covered the rooftops and narrow streets, and the cold air made the university halls feel even quieter than usual.

But inside the classrooms, everyone felt the same pressure.

Semester exams.

Clare sat at a large wooden table in the university library, surrounded by books and scattered notes.

"Why do professors always wait until winter to give the hardest exams?" Jack complained, leaning back in his chair dramatically.

Noah pushed a book toward him.

"Because students only start studying when exams arrive."

Jack sighed.

"That sounds unfairly accurate."

Daniel chuckled softly while reviewing his notes.

Clare tried to stay focused, but the constant teasing around the table made it difficult not to smile.

Just then someone approached their table.

"Mind if I join?"

Clare looked up.

"Alice!"

Alice placed her books on the table with a small smile.

"I thought studying with all of you might be helpful."

Jack leaned closer to Daniel and whispered loudly,

"This suddenly feels like a very serious study group."

Noah rolled her eyes.

"Sit down and open your book."

Alice laughed softly and took a seat beside them.

For a while the group studied quietly, occasionally exchanging questions and notes.

Clare explained a complicated law concept to Noah, while Daniel helped Jack understand a historical timeline.

The library felt warm and peaceful despite the cold winter outside.

Then another familiar voice spoke from behind them.

"Looks like a full classroom here."

Everyone turned.

Xavier stood there holding a stack of books.

Clare smiled.

"Are you studying too?"

He glanced at the open pages on the table.

"What subject is this?"

"French history," Noah replied.

Xavier raised an eyebrow.

"Well… I did graduate from a French high school."

Jack immediately leaned forward.

"Wait. You're saying you actually understand this book?"

Xavier laughed quietly.

"More than you do, probably."

Noah smiled.

"In that case… would you help us?"

Xavier pulled a chair closer.

"Of course."

Soon the study table became even livelier.

Xavier patiently explained difficult sections while the others listened carefully.

Even Jack paid attention this time.

Alice watched the discussion with quiet confidence.

For the first time since the semester began, she felt prepared.

When the exams finally arrived, the university halls were silent.

Students filled the classrooms, writing carefully as snow drifted gently outside the windows.

The hours passed slowly.

But one by one, the papers were finished.

When the final exam ended, the entire campus seemed to breathe again.

Jack stretched his arms dramatically.

"I survived."

Noah laughed.

"Barely."

Daniel smiled.

"At least it's over."

Alice closed her notebook confidently.

"I think I did well."

Clare looked at her with curiosity.

"You sound very sure."

Alice nodded.

"This time I might come first."

Jack blinked.

"Well… now I'm suddenly nervous."

Everyone laughed.

But the results would not be announced until later.

For now, something far more pleasant awaited them.

Winter vacation.

The university halls slowly emptied as students prepared to return to their homes for Christmas.

Clare packed her books quietly.

Daniel noticed.

"You're leaving?"

"Yes," she said softly.

"It's been a long time since I visited home. My parents will expect me for Christmas."

Jack leaned back in his chair.

"So the group is breaking apart for the holidays."

Noah smiled.

"Only for a while."

Clare looked at her friends and felt a warm sense of gratitude.

The past months had been full of surprises—new friendships, inventions, rivalries, and even royal visitors.

But for now, winter had brought something calmer.

A moment of rest.

Soon the town would grow quieter as students traveled home for the holidays.

And Clare herself was about to begin a journey back to a place she hadn't seen in a long time.

Her home.
