Chapter 45 - ROBERT'S LAST DEFENCE

CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE

The investigators summoned Robert Cole for another interview after reviewing James's documents.

This time, his confidence was gone.

Detective Okafor placed copies of the instructions on the table.

"James has confirmed that you directed him to move these records. We also have financial records that contradict your earlier statements."

Robert adjusted his jacket.

"James is a liar. He is trying to save himself."

"Then explain why his account matches information contained in documents we recovered from the storage locker."

Robert remained silent.

The detective continued. "You have already admitted to altering company records. We are investigating the full extent of your actions, including the attempt to shift blame onto Grace."

Robert finally leaned back.

"Richard was willing to negotiate with me. He wanted the scandal to disappear as much as I did."

"That does not answer the question."

For the first time, Robert looked genuinely cornered.

He admitted that he had altered records to protect his position and had used Grace as a convenient target when questions arose. He also acknowledged instructing James to move documents that could expose him.

His statement was recorded, and the investigators explained that his claims would be checked against the available evidence.

When Daniel heard the news, he immediately called Aisha.

"They have enough information to take the next steps," he told her. "Robert's latest statement matches the documents in several important areas."

Aisha closed her eyes in relief.

"Does this mean Mum's name will finally be cleared?"

"It means the evidence is getting stronger. We still have to let the process finish."

She appreciated that he did not promise something he could not control.

That evening, Grace received confirmation that her formal statement and the supporting records had been added to the investigation file.

She read the message twice before sitting down.

It was not a public apology, and it did not return the years she had lost.

But the truth was no longer buried.

And Robert could no longer control the story simply by repeating his lies.
