Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Choice in the Shadows

A thunderous crash reverberated through the very foundations of the Great Hall.

BOOM!

Layers of thick wooden planks, nailed shut to barricade the hall's entrance, shuddered violently, sending a shower of dust and splinters to the floor. The sound of razor-sharp claws scraping against the wood—skree... skree...—cut deep into the ears, as if demons from the pits of hell were trying to tear the two worlds apart.

Inside the hall, the meager light from the few remaining torches flickered with every impact, reflecting off the deathly pale faces of the survivors.

BOOM!

"Hold it! Don't let them break through!" The soldiers strained together, throwing their weight against the barricade to buy time, praying for a miracle that seemed further away with every second.

Titania stood tall before the buckling wooden gate. Her knuckles were white as she gripped the hilt of her sword, her hawk-like eyes fixed on the splintering cracks that grew wider with every strike.

CRASH!!!

Shards of wood flew inward from the force of the blow. A scream of pure terror erupted from a corner of the room.

"It's breaking... It's breaking!"

"Silence!" Titania's voice thundered, powerful and sharp like a blade striking through the chaos. "If these wooden walls fall... then we shall be the last thing they ever see!"

Silence returned to shroud the room once more—a heavy silence, thick with the scent of despair. Elara stood nearby, the dim light catching her small, trembling hands. Her eyes remained fixed on the door, vacant and distant, as if the image of her father's slaughter was still playing on a loop in her mind.

"Father..." she whispered, her voice so faint it nearly vanished into the draft.

Oscar stood by her side with a grim expression, his grip on his spear so tight his joints were pale. Though his eyes flickered with a worry he didn't dare speak aloud, he stood his ground, unyielding.

"There is no retreat left," Titania said, her voice low yet firm. "Whatever the cost, everyone must stand their ground one last time!"

On the Other Side — The Inner Tower

The darkness here was different. It wasn't the menacing darkness of the enemy outside, but a suffocating shadow born of an agonizing wait.

Laiki sat leaning against the cold stone wall, his breath heavy and trembling. A broken steel sword lay across his lap. His fingers still twitched from the strain of a battle that seemed never-ending. Laina huddled beside him, quieter than usual, her small hands clutching her brother's sleeve as if it were her final lifeline.

"Brother Laiki..." her voice was a fragile wisp.

"Hmm?"

"If... if we survive this... will we get to go home?"

The question sent a jolt through Laiki's heart. Images of the old wooden house... the laughter that once filled the air... the scent of the food their mother used to cook. Everything in those memories felt like it belonged to another world, one he could no longer reach.

"Yes," he finally answered, forcing the most bitter smile he had ever worn. "Father and Brother Lycan will find a way to come for us. I'm sure of it."

"Really...?"

"Mm-hmm," he reached out with a trembling hand and stroked his sister's head gently. "Just like when we got lost in the forest, remember?"

Laina managed a faint smile, even as tears welled in her eyes. "You said the exact same thing back then..."

"I have something for you." Laina held out a meticulously woven flower bracelet to Laiki. "So much has happened today that you might have forgotten... but today is November 27th, Omesis 3587. You're sixteen now, Brother."

"My birthday? That's right... thank you, Laina. I'll cherish it always." He stroked her head again, his touch full of tenderness.

"Ha... what a touching family moment. It's almost enough to make me envious."

A voice cut through the silence. Everyone turned at once. Sera sat perched on an old wooden crate, her slender legs crossed nonchalantly. Her piercing gaze was locked on Laiki, a faint smile playing on her lips—one that was hard to tell if it was mocking or affectionate.

"While the world below is collapsing... you two are still dreaming of home? Oh, and by the way... Happy Birthday, kid."

"What's wrong with that?" Laiki snapped back, his eyes hardening.

Sera shrugged slowly. "Nothing... it's just so 'innocent' that I can't help but laugh."

The atmosphere in the tower grew so tense one could almost hear the pounding of hearts.

"Do you really think it ends here?" Sera continued, her voice flat yet chilling to the bone. "Do you think if you survive the night, everything will go back to the way it was? This fortress... your village... they are merely the small beginnings of the disaster to come."

Reef, leaning against the opposite wall, let out a soft, dry laugh filled with pain. He clutched his head tightly, the veins in his temples bulging.

"You talk like you know everything..." he muttered, his vision beginning to blur. "But for now... I just want my head to not explode..."

Laiki looked over with concern. "Reef, are you okay?"

"I'm fine..." Reef forced a smile, but it looked more terrifying than reassuring. "Just... a little tired."

Rin, who had been silent the whole time, stared at Reef without blinking. Her nose twitched slightly as if she sensed something wrong. "Brother Reef..." she said, her voice shaking. "...Your scent... it's changing again."

Before anyone could question him—BOOM!!!

A violent crash erupted from the lower floor. The entire tower shuddered, shaking stone dust from the ceiling. Terrified screams echoed up through the ventilation shafts. Laiki lunged to his feet, his heart drumming a war beat in his chest. "It's starting..."

Everyone realized the cruel truth... there was nowhere left to run. Sera slowly stood up, her taunting smile vanishing. All that remained was a gaze so deep and dark it looked like a black hole. She stared directly into Laiki's eyes.

"...Are you coming?"

Her voice had changed completely. It was deep, heavy, and laced with a mysterious power that rattled the soul. "Laiki... Son of Darius."

Laiki's breath hitched at the sound of his father's name from her lips. Sera stepped toward the descending staircase, followed by five sturdy men. Her form began to blur into the shadows until only a pair of amber eyes remained, glowing vividly in the gloom.

The sound of shifting bones—crack... snap...—echoed in the silence. A massive shadow moved with primordial power.

"The world you once knew... is crumbling." A low, guttural growl vibrated through the tower. "And I don't plan on dying in this cramped stone hole."

Those amber eyes drew closer, steady and oppressive. Soon, the form of a "Great Tiger" emerged from the darkness, so majestic and fierce that even a crying babe would be silenced in its presence.

"Get on..."

The voice was no longer human; it was the voice of a beast, raw and instinctive. Five other massive shadows moved close behind her, their low growls harmonizing in the dark like a symphony of death.
