Chapter 72 - [72] : The Uchiha Orphan

--------------------------------------------------

The dying sun painted the Senju compound in shades of amber and rust.

Senju Shūichi leaned on his walking stick at the edge of the cliff, alone. Wind tugged at his white hair and dragged dry grass across his weathered face.

His final years were quiet ones.

Senichi's death had carved something out of him that never grew back. From the day his best friend stopped breathing, Shūichi lost all taste for war. He couldn't bring himself to raise the Senju banner again, couldn't stomach the thought of leading his people into another cycle of killing that would only breed more killing.

The man who'd once dominated battlefields with a grin on his face now sat by rivers and stared at the water for hours, looking for something he knew wasn't there.

"When does it end..."

The words dissolved in the wind before they reached anyone's ears.

He gazed at the mountain range on the horizon. Senju-Uchiha borderlands. Every ridge, every valley, every stretch of grass soaked in the blood of both clans' children. Decades of it.

Shūichi's decision to stop fighting was never about weakness. Never about running out of strength. He'd watched the cycle long enough to understand what it really was. A machine that fed on itself. Each death breeding the next. Each act of revenge creating the justification for the one that followed.

If it continued, the only possible ending was mutual annihilation.

"If Senichi and I had figured this out sooner... how much could we have prevented?"

The regret was an old companion by now.

His dream had been reconciliation. Not conquest. Not dominance. Just two clans, exhausted enough to put down their weapons and try something different. A naive dream, maybe. But it was the only one worth having.

He never saw it realized.

Age caught up with him. Illness settled into bones that had absorbed too many impacts over too many years. Senju Shūichi died in his sleep, alone in his quarters, without ceremony.

Fifteen years after Uchiha Senichi.

........

Ten years after Shūichi's death.

The Uchiha central shrine. Incense smoke hanging thick in the air.

The entire clan had assembled for the annual Grand Ceremony—a formal worship of the Sage of Six Paths' sacred tablet. Clan members wore ceremonial dress, their faces solemn and reverent.

All except for one corner of the grounds, where the atmosphere carried a very different energy.

"Get LOST, beggar! No parents, no family, no right to be here!"

"Trash like you doesn't deserve to stand in front of the Sage's shrine! You'd dirty his eyes just by looking!"

Three stocky Uchiha boys had cornered a smaller figure near the edge of the ceremony grounds. Fists and feet landed with meaty thuds, each impact punctuated by jeering laughter.

When they'd had their fill, they spat a few more insults and wandered off, leaving the thin boy crumpled in the dirt.

Adult Uchiha nearby watched the entire thing happen. Not one of them moved. Not one of them spoke. They simply looked away, as though the boy on the ground was part of the scenery.

In a clan that measured worth by bloodline and connections, an orphan with neither was less than invisible. He was furniture.

After a few seconds of silence, the boy pushed himself upright.

He brushed the dust and bootprints off his clothes with mechanical efficiency. His face showed nothing. Not pain. Not anger. Not humiliation. Just a flat, practiced blankness that no child his age should have been capable of.

His name was Uchiha Kitsune.

The Uchiha Clan's least significant member. Parents dead. Grandparents dead. No relatives. No advocate. A ghost occupying space that nobody wanted to acknowledge.

"Cough cough... those bastards really don't hold back."

He wiped blood from the corner of his mouth with his sleeve.

"When I'm strong enough, every single one of you is going to remember today."

The thought burned white-hot inside his chest. But he locked it down. Buried it deep. Kept his face blank.

He was years ahead of his peers in one respect: he understood exactly how power worked in the Uchiha Clan. Strength was currency. Weakness was a death sentence. An orphan with no combat ability was lucky to receive table scraps. Complaining about the treatment would only make things worse.

Survival meant silence. For now...

Kitsune picked up a stick of incense from the altar table, lit it, and bowed before the Sage of Six Paths' tablet with genuine reverence.

Sage of Six Paths, please. Give me a future. Give me strength.

........

That night, sleep wouldn't come.

Kitsune lay on his thin mat, staring at the ceiling, the bruises from the afternoon throbbing dully across his ribs.

"Why... why don't I have parents..."

Tears slid down his temples and soaked into the straw beneath his head. He let them fall without wiping them away. Nobody was watching. Nobody cared.

Eventually the walls of his tiny room felt like they were closing in. He needed air. He slipped out of the Uchiha compound and walked until the sounds of the clan settlement faded behind him.

He found a spot by the river and sat. Let the sound of the current fill the spaces where thoughts would have been.

Then he heard it.

A sharp whoosh of displaced air, followed by the crack of something heavy breaking apart.

Kitsune crept toward the sound, ducking behind a tree trunk at the edge of a clearing.

A girl. About his age, maybe a year older. Training alone in the moonlight.

"HAH!"

She launched herself skyward, blue chakra flaring around her fist, and brought it down on a boulder three times her size.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

The stone exploded into gravel. Dust billowed outward. The girl landed in a crouch, not even breathing hard.

Kitsune's eyes went wide. He recognized that technique immediately.

Senju superhuman strength.

"They're training THIS close to our territory now?"

He frowned. Ever since Senichi's death forty-six years ago, the Uchiha had been on the back foot. Even after Shūichi died, the decline continued. The Senju had been pushing the Uchiha around for decades, and apparently they were comfortable enough to let their kids practice within striking distance of the Uchiha border.

"I need to leave. If she spots me, I'm dead."

He shifted his weight to retreat.

Snap.

A twig. Under his foot. The most cliché, infuriating, life-threatening sound effect in the history of stealth.

'Are you KIDDING me? Why is there a branch RIGHT HERE??'

The girl materialized behind him before the sound finished echoing.

"WHO'S THERE??"

A hand locked around Kitsune's throat. Not crushing, but firm enough to make the point. His feet left the ground.

He didn't resist. There was nothing to resist with. A civilian-tier orphan versus a Senju girl who could punch boulders into powder. The math was simple.

This is it. This is the dumbest way to die.

He squeezed his eyes shut and went limp.

Nothing happened.

"What are you?"

The girl's voice was sharp but not hostile. More confused than angry.

Kitsune cracked one eye open. Got his first clear look at her face.

Pretty. High ponytail. Taller than him by a head, despite being roughly the same age. Features set in a stern expression that looked borrowed from someone older.

"I... I was just passing through..."

The words scraped out of his compressed windpipe in a thin wheeze.

The pressure on his throat released. Kitsune dropped to the ground, gasping.

The girl studied him for a long moment. Scrawny. Unarmed. No chakra worth detecting. No headband, no clan insignia visible. About as threatening as a wet towel.

"Oh. Just a civilian. Get out of here, fast. There are Uchiha nearby."

Kitsune scrambled to his feet, bowing repeatedly. "Thank you! What's your name?"

"Uzuki. I can't give you my family name. Now go. Quickly."

Senju Uzuki gave him one last dismissive look, then turned and vanished into the dark forest.

Kitsune waited until her presence was completely gone before his legs gave out and he collapsed flat on his back, chest heaving.

"Thank god she was just a kid... if that had been an adult Senju, they'd have seen right through me and I'd be a corpse."

A scrawny Uchiha boy, skulking around the border at midnight? Any experienced shinobi would have killed first and skipped the questions entirely.

"I need to get back. If Senju kids are already training this close to our lines... how long before the clan gets overrun completely?"

He picked himself up, melted into the shadows, and hurried home.
