Cold steel and burning eyes.
Kitsune's Sharingan showed no hesitation.
"Uzuki. I'm sorry. Forgive me." He drew the short blade from behind his back and drove it into her chest.
The sound as the blade went in was small and precise. Metal parted flesh. It was the quietest noise he had ever heard, paired with the loudest act he had ever committed.
Uzuki's body went rigid. The flush from the choking drained from her face in a single heartbeat, leaving behind something the color of paper.
"Kitsune..." She looked down and saw the handle sticking out of her chest. She watched the dark stain spread across her clothes, feeling strangely distant, as if she were watching her own death from outside herself.
Tears fell. She didn't choose to cry. Her eyes just produced tears, like a wound produces blood, automatically and without her control. Her body understood before her mind did.
He really did it...
The boy who'd held her hand in the forest. The man who'd never married because the only woman he wanted was on the wrong side of a war. The person she'd spent twenty years pretending she didn't think about every single night.
He'd just put a knife in her heart.
Not metaphorically this time.
Wasn't there an understanding between us? Through all the fighting, all the years, all the battles where we could have killed each other and never did, wasn't there an unspoken rule that we would never actually do it?
When did that stop being true?
"Kitsune... you... did you forget..."
Her lips moved and cracked. The words she wanted to say—the accusations, the grief, the half-lifetime of questions that had never been asked—were all stuck in her throat, like a crowd trying to push through a doorway that was too narrow.
Nothing came out.
"I'm sorry, Uzuki." Kitsune's hand was still locked around the blade's grip, knuckles chalky as exposed bone. Tears ran down his face in parallel lines, dripping onto her collar and soaking through the fabric.
The fanaticism was gone from his eyes. The calculated cunning and predatory patience had vanished the moment the blade went in. All that remained was wreckage. His grief was so deep that it could only be expressed through tears.
The only person who'd ever been kind to him. The only person who'd ever seen the real him and chosen to stay. And he'd just murdered her with his own hands.
The pain in Uzuki's chest consumed everything. Her vision darkened at the edges. Her chakra retreated from her extremities like a tide pulling away from shore.
She looked at him one last time.
He wouldn't meet her eyes. He couldn't... He stared at the floor beside her head because seeing what he had done would have destroyed him.
Her eyes closed. The defiance and the love and the heartbreak that had lived behind them for thirty years went dark.
Kitsune's body began to shake.
He wasn't just trembling. He was shaking with the kind of full-body convulsion that happens when whatever holds a person together finally breaks, and nothing is left to soften the blow.
He collapsed to his knees beside her.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHH!!!"
The scream that tore out of him didn't sound human. It echoed off the funeral hall's walls, coming back distorted and layered, filling the room with a sound which was both agony and madness.
And inside his skull, the Sharingan responded.
Three tomoe spun so fast they blurred. The crimson background seemed to boil. The familiar pattern twisted and collapsed into itself, then reformed into something new: geometric, alien, and exerting a pressure that made the air feel heavier.
Mangekyō Sharingan.
Fully awakened.
The ocular power flooded the hall in a wave of invisible force, shaking the hanging silks and putting out every candle. But Kitsune felt nothing. No victory, no excitement, no sense of achievement.
There was only emptiness where a person had been.
His hand reached out. Trembling fingers stroked across Uzuki's cold cheek, wiping the last tear from the corner of her eye.
"It wasn't me who killed you, Uzuki. It was this world."
"Without power, I can't protect the Uchiha. Can't protect anything. This world grinds everyone who isn't strong enough into dust, and I refuse to be dust."
"For myself. For the clan. This was the only road."
His voice broke apart. The red glow of the Mangekyō and the tears in his eyes blended together into a single, blurred wash of red.
The incense kept burning. The white silk kept swaying. The funeral hall remained unchanged by what had happened inside.
Footsteps outside. Several Uchiha fighters entered the hall, blood still drying on their armor. They dropped to one knee.
"Lord Kitsune! The five Senju escorts have been eliminated!"
Kitsune slowly looked away from Uzuki's face. In that moment, his grief closed off deep inside him, and what returned was the cold, focused mindset of a clan leader at war.
He stood up and walked to the casket. He lifted Uzuki's body with a gentleness that went against everything he had just done and placed her inside the coffin that had been made for his own fake death.
Her face was peaceful. Her eyes would never open again.
He closed the lid.
"New orders. We move tonight. Full mobilization. White mourning clothes stay on. Cross the rivers under the cover of darkness. Targets: the Naka and Kita River territories. Total offensive against the Senju. No quarter."
The Uchiha fighters' eyes ignited.
Ten years!!
Ten years of bowing and scraping and pretending to be harmless. Ten years of swallowing pride, building strength in secret, and waiting for this moment. The restraint had lasted so long that its release felt almost euphoric.
"YES, SIR!"
Within minutes, war horns resounded through the Uchiha compound. Their sound was low and mournful, turning the feeling of a funeral into a battle cry.
Eight thousand Uchiha—still wearing their white mourning clothes with strips of funeral cloth tied around their foreheads- gathered in formation. They were armed, ready, and filled with ten years of pent-up aggression.
The mourning robes, meant to show grief, became the most frightening battle uniform the shinobi world had ever seen. They looked like a ghost army, an ocean of white moving through the darkness.
Kitsune stood at the front. Mangekyō spinning in the dark.
"Move out. Fight until there's nothing left to fight."
"UCHIHA FOREVER!"
The army moved into the night as swiftly and sharply as a drawn blade.
——————————
The Senju never saw it coming.
They were sure the Uchiha were deep in mourning—grieving, disorganized, and leaderless. The thought that the whole clan would launch a surprise attack on the night of their leader's funeral was so unlikely that no one even considered it.
The river defenses were practically unmanned. Guards chatted about Kitsune's funeral arrangements and traded gossip about Uzuki's relationship with the dead clan head. Nobody was watching the tree line.
The first wave of fire techniques lit up the sky like a second sunrise. Kunai rained down like hail. Uchiha in white clothes rushed across both riverbanks in a screaming tide.
By the time the Senju sentries understood what was happening, the perimeter was already gone.
The funeral robes were the cruelest part. White fabric flashed between the trees, catching the moonlight and making every attacker look like a spirit from the grave. The shock alone broke half the defenders before any fighting began.
The Uchiha fought with the fury built up over a decade of forced smiles and hidden anger. Every punch, every technique, and every sword stroke held the burden of years of humiliation turned into deadly force.
The Senju war machine, the strongest military force in the shinobi world, was destroyed before it could even respond.
By dawn, both river valleys belonged to the Uchiha.
The Naka and the Kita—strategic positions that would shape control for generations—were taken in one night, paid for with a single life.
The Senju reeled. Casualties were catastrophic. Their strongest fighter, Uzuki, was missing. Their command structure was in chaos.
