Chapter 10 - Chapter 1 New Horizon 001.0 - A Wound That Burns

Morning came quieter beyond the walls of Nolvaris.

The roads stretched outward once more—

less structured, less controlled—

and far more honest about danger.

Filo walked ahead like she always did.

Unbothered.

Unhurried.

Aetherwyn followed, adjusting his grip on his wand.

Still new.

But no longer unfamiliar.

"…So this is it," he said.

"…First real quest."

Filo didn't look back.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…Try not to die."

Aetherwyn sighed.

"…You really don't do encouragement."

"…Not my style.

They reached the marked location

A clearing.

Wide.

Open.

Too quiet.

Aetherwyn scanned the area.

"…This is it?"

Filo stopped.

Looked once.

Then again.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…He's not here."

"…The Guild Master?"

"…Supposed to be."

Silence.

"…Whatever."

She turned toward him.

"…So."

"…How are you holding up?"

Aetherwyn hesitated.

"…Honestly?"

"…A little worried."

Filo raised a brow.

"…About what?"

"…We're meeting a legend."

"…That doesn't help."

Aetherwyn exhaled.

"…I heard things."

"…Of course you did."

"…That he walks into Rifts."

"…He does."

A pause.

"…That didn't help."

Filo smirked faintly.

"…Relax."

"…He's actually pretty laid back."

Aetherwyn looked at her.

"…That's not convincing."

"…You'll see."

The wind shifted.

Not naturally.

"…So we're just waiting?" Aetherwyn asked.

"…No."

Filo's voice dropped.

"…We're not."

Aetherwyn frowned.

"…What—"

Then—

He felt it.

Not pressure.

Not danger.

**Awareness.**

Like something had been there—

long before they noticed.

"…Since when—"

"Don't," Filo muttered.

"…Just look."

Aetherwyn turned.

And saw him.

He stood there.

Not approaching.

Not hiding.

Just—

existing

As if the clearing had formed around him.

The figure carried quiet, absolute control.

One hand resting at his side.

The other relaxed—

but ready.

His features were sharp.

Too refined.

High cheekbones.

A narrow jaw.

A face that didn't need expression.

Because it didn't change.

Then—

Aetherwyn saw it.

Long, pointed **elven ears**.

"…He's not human," he whispered.

Filo didn't respond.

The man's eyes settled on him.

Narrow.

Focused

They didn't look

They **evaluated**.

Aetherwyn felt it—

like being read.

Understood—

without speaking.

The man stepped forward.

One step.

That was enough.

"…You're late."

Filo exhaled.

"…We got held up."

"…You're still here," she added.

"…Of course."

His gaze shifted.

To Aetherwyn

And stayed there.

"…This is him," Filo said.

A pause.

"…You're smaller than I expected."

Aetherwyn blinked.

"…That's… not what I thought you'd say."

Filo snorted.

Athos stepped closer.

"…First quest?"

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…You're not ready."

Aetherwyn froze.

"…What?"

Filo crossed her arms.

"…He passed the trial."

"…I'm aware.

"…That doesn't change the outcome."

Silence

"…Then why am I here?" Aetherwyn asked.

Athos didn't hesitate.

"…Because you came anyway."

A beat

"…Good."

"…You're the Guild Master, right?" Aetherwyn asked.

A pause.

"…Athos.

"…That's it?"

"…For now."

Filo sighed.

"…He's called the **Hollow King**."

"…Athos. The Hollow King."

"…Most don't even know he has a real name."

Aetherwyn frowned

"…Why that title?"

Athos answered.

"…Because there is nothing in me that hesitates."

Silence.

"…That's not normal."

"…No."

"…It isn't."

Aetherwyn studied him.

"…You don't feel like a king."

"…I'm not."

A pause.

"…I end things that need ending."

Filo added quietly—

"…He doesn't command."

"…He decides."

Aetherwyn swallowed.

"…And people just follow that?"

"…If they understand what's good for them."

"…You gave us this mission?" Aetherwyn asked.

"…Yes."

"…You're coming?"

"…No."

Aetherwyn blinked.

---

"…Oh."

"…Not unless necessary.

Not reassuring.

Athos's gaze shifted slightly.

"…Is it stable?"

Filo paused.

Just for a moment.

"…Yeah."

"…No sudden developments."

Aetherwyn frowned

"…What does that—"

"…One small thing happened," Filo added quickly.

Athos didn't press.

"…Noted."

"…I'll explain later."

"…No you won't," Aetherwyn said.

"…Correct," both replied at once.

"…Wow."

"…Clear the surrounding area," Athos said.

"…Low to mid-tier threats."

"…Nothing beyond your capability."

Aetherwyn exhaled.

"…That sounds manageable."

A pause.

"…Try not to die."

"…Again with that?"

"…If too many recruits die," Athos said calmly,

"…no one joins the guild."

Aetherwyn looked at Filo.

"…Is he joking?"

"…I don't know anymore."

"…Begin."

No signal.

No command.

Just—

permission.

---

The forest didn't stay quiet.

A shimmer.

Then three.

"…Lesser Spirits," Filo said.

"…Good starting point."

They moved.

"Aether Focus."

The world sharpened.

"…Aether Pulse."

_THMP._

First—gone.

Second—clean.

Third—tracked—

_THMP._

Silence.

"…Good," Filo said.

"…That felt easier."

"…Because you didn't panic."

A glow appeared ahead.

"…That's not normal," Filo said.

A **Light Spirit** formed.

"…It doesn't look hostile—"

It moved.

Fast.

"…Now it is."

"…Aether Focus!"

He fired—

Deflected.

"…What—?"

"Adjust!"

He waited—

tracked—

"…There!"

_THMP._

Hit.

Gone.

"…That one was different."

"…Yeah."

"…Wrong location."

"…Stop."

A **Dark Spirit** formed.

Filo stepped back.

"…This one's yours."

"…Alone?"

"…Yes."

It lunged.

"…Aether Focus!"

Movement slowed.

He adjusted—

"…Aether Pulse!"

Hit—

but not enough.

"…Again."

He steadied—

"…Now!"

_THMP._

Direct core hit.

The spirit shattered.

Silence.

"…That counted," Aetherwyn muttered.

"…Yeah."

"…Area's done."

"…Not quite."

They turned.

Athos.

"…I've cleared my end."

"…Already?"

"…You're not the only squad."

He turned—

paused—

"…Actually…"

His gaze shifted.

"…You go east."

Filo narrowed her eyes.

"…Something wrong?"

"…No."

A pause.

"…Just a feeling."

Not reassuring.

He tossed her a crystal.

"…Use this."

"…Aetherlink Shard."

"…Direct connection."

"…Don't waste it."

And he was gone.

---

Goblins.

Quick.

Efficient.

Spirit Wolves.

Faster.

Sharper.

Aetherwyn adapted.

Cleaner.

Faster.

Then—

The ground shifted.

A **Nature Spirit** rose.

"…Higher low-tier," Filo said.

She weakened it—

then stepped back.

"…Your turn."

"…Of course."

The fight was harder.

He moved—

dodged—

"…Aether Focus!"

Timed it—

"…Now!"

_THMP._

Core hit.

It collapsed.

System flickered.

**[Level 2]**

**[Points +2]**

**[Skill Mastery Increased]**

"…That felt good."

"…Don't get used to it."

_Snap._

They froze.

A girl.

Alone.

"…You from the Guild?"

"…Yeah."

Filo paused.

Recognition hit.

"…Wait."

"…You're—"

"…The princess."

"…Shhh!"

"…Keep it down!"

"…What are you doing here?" Filo asked.

"…I met a spirit."

"…You WHAT?"

"…I wanted a contract…"

Filo's expression hardened.

"…How are you sneaking out?"

"…I have my ways…"

"…I saw people here before…"

"…They felt wrong."

Filo's eyes sharpened.

"…What kind of—"

The shard pulsed.

"…Filo."

Athos.

"…Elderglen Village."

"…Large-scale incident."

"…Move now."

Filo turned.

"…We're going."

"…You too—"

"…No," the princess said.

"…I need to check on my spirit."

"…You're not staying—"

"…I can protect myself."

Filo hesitated.

Then—

"…Stay hidden."

"…Don't move."

"…We'll be back."

They reached the village.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

"…Looks normal," Aetherwyn said.

"…Yeah…"

Filo stopped.

Her eyes widened.

"…No—"

Aether surged.

"…AETHERWYN—GET DOWN!"

She moved instantly—

throwing herself in front of him—

Then—

**BOOOOOOM.**

Flame consumed everything.

Heat.

Light.

Sound.

Gone.

The blast tore through the village—

Buildings shattered—

Ground split—

Air screamed—

Aetherwyn couldn't see.

Couldn't breathe.

Couldn't think.

Only—

Filo's arm.

Holding him down.

Shielding him.

The fire rolled over them—

Relentless.

Endless.

Then—

Silence.

Not peace.

Absence.

Smoke drifted.

Ash fell.

The world—

had changed.

Aetherwyn opened his eyes.

The heat still burned.

And for the first time—

He understood.

Not every battle begins with a fight.

Some begin—

**with a wound that burns.**
