Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Little Shadows

AURORA:

Aurora woke before the sun fully rose over the hills surrounding Milan.

For a moment, she lay still beneath the unfamiliar silk sheets, listening. The villa was quiet—too quiet. Not the peaceful quiet of comfort, but the hollow quiet of absence.

She pushed herself up and tied her blonde hair into a loose knot. The air was cool against her skin as she stepped into the hallway.

This was her second morning here.

Her second morning in Luca Romano's world.

She walked downstairs and followed the faint sound of movement into the kitchen.

Isabella sat at the long marble table, her small legs swinging above the floor. A bowl of cereal sat untouched in front of her, the milk slowly turning the flakes soft.

Aurora approached gently.

"Good morning, Isabella."

The little girl looked up, her dark eyes still heavy with sleep.

"You stayed," she said quietly.

Aurora smiled softly. "I told you I would."

She sat beside her. "Do you want something else? Toast? Fruit?"

Isabella shrugged.

Aurora noticed the hesitation, the uncertainty of a child used to being alone.

"Well," Aurora said, reaching for the milk, "we can eat together."

She poured fresh milk into the bowl, and after a moment, Isabella picked up her spoon.

It felt like a small victory.

Later, Aurora helped her brush her hair, her fingers moving carefully through the soft dark strands.

"Does Papa eat breakfast with you?" Aurora asked gently.

Isabella shook her head.

"He works."

Aurora swallowed.

She had expected that answer.

Still, hearing it from a child made it heavier.

Hours passed quietly.

Aurora folded Isabella's clothes, read her stories, and sat beside her while she colored on the bedroom floor.

Sunlight filled the room, turning Isabella's hair almost gold.

Aurora watched her draw carefully.

"What are you making?" she asked.

"My family."

Aurora leaned closer.

She saw Isabella.

She saw Luca.

And a third figure.

Blonde.

Aurora's breath caught.

"Who's that?" she asked softly.

Isabella looked at her like the answer was obvious.

"You."

Aurora's chest tightened painfully.

Before she could respond, the distant sound of a car engine echoed outside.

Isabella froze.

Her head lifted instantly.

"Papa," she whispered.

LUCA:

The Romano Group headquarters towered over Milan like a silent threat.

Luca stood behind his desk, his black suit immaculate, his expression cold.

Matteo stood across from him, reviewing documents.

"The port authority has been paid," Matteo said. "Tonight's shipment will pass without inspection."

Luca nodded once.

"And Ferraro?"

Matteo's jaw tightened slightly.

"He's been speaking to people he shouldn't."

Luca's eyes hardened.

Ferraro had always been ambitious. Ambition was dangerous in men who forgot their place.

"End it," Luca said calmly.

Matteo didn't hesitate. "It will be done."

Silence filled the office.

Matteo hesitated before adding, "You've been leaving earlier lately."

Luca's gaze snapped to him.

Matteo didn't look intimidated.

"It's about Isabella," Matteo clarified.

Luca said nothing.

Because Matteo was right.

His daughter had begun to look at him differently. With expectation.

With hope.

And now there was Aurora.

Her presence lingered in his thoughts in ways he didn't understand.

Soft.

Unsettling.

Dangerous.

Matteo spoke again. "The nanny. Have you vetted her fully?"

"Yes."

Matteo nodded, but Luca could see the unspoken warning.

Everyone close to Luca became a target.

Or a weakness.

"I'll return home," Luca said shortly.

Matteo inclined his head.

Aurora

Aurora stood in the hallway as the front door opened.

Her heart beat faster without reason.

Luca stepped inside, removing his gloves slowly. His presence filled the space instantly—tall, controlled, dressed in black.

Power followed him like a shadow.

His eyes landed on Isabella first.

She ran to him.

"Papa!"

Luca caught her easily, lifting her into his arms. The hardness in his face softened slightly.

Aurora watched from a distance, unseen.

"I missed you," Isabella said.

Luca pressed his lips briefly to her hair.

"I'm here."

His eyes lifted.

They met Aurora's.

The moment stretched.

She felt exposed beneath his gaze.

Not judged.

Not dismissed.

Seen.

He lowered Isabella gently.

"You behaved?" he asked.

Isabella nodded proudly. "Aurora stayed with me."

Aurora stepped forward. "She was wonderful."

Luca studied her carefully.

He gave a small nod.

"Good."

One word.

But it mattered.

Dinner

The dining room was enormous, the table far too large for three people.

Aurora stood near the doorway. She hadn't planned to join them.

She didn't belong there.

Luca noticed.

His voice was calm but firm.

"Sit."

Aurora hesitated. "I don't want to intrude."

"You're not."

It wasn't a request.

She sat beside Isabella.

A maid served dinner silently.

For a while, only the sound of silverware filled the room.

Isabella spoke first.

"Aurora read me stories."

Luca glanced at Aurora.

"Did she?"

Aurora nodded. "She likes stories about brave girls."

Isabella smiled.

Luca watched them both.

Something unfamiliar moved in his chest.

Something dangerously close to peace.

He hadn't felt it since before his marriage collapsed.

Since before betrayal had taught him to trust no one.

Aurora looked up suddenly, catching him watching her.

Neither looked away immediately.

The air shifted.

Quiet.

Fragile.

Unavoidable.

And Luca Romano realized, for the first time in years—

his home no longer felt empty.
