Chapter 6 - The Beast Behind The Gentleman

Morning light slipped through the curtains, gently warming the room.

I stirred slowly beneath the soft sheets, my body still heavy with sleep. For a moment, I didn't remember where I was. The quiet room, the faint scent of lavender, the warmth of the blanket—it all felt strangely peaceful.

Then the memories of yesterday returned.

The ocean.

The laughter.

The way Alessandro had carried me onto the yacht despite my protests.

A small smile touched my lips before I even realized it.

But the smile faded just as quickly.

Why had he been so… different?

The cold, distant man I married had suddenly turned into someone almost gentle.

And I didn't know what to do with that.

A soft knock sounded on the door.

Before I could answer, the door opened slightly and one of the maids stepped inside.

"Good morning, madam," she said politely.

I sat up slowly, pushing my hair away from my face.

"Good morning."

She stepped closer with a warm smile.

"Mr. Alessandro asked me to inform you to get ready."

I frowned slightly.

"Get ready for what?"

"He said he will be escorting you somewhere this morning."

My heart skipped.

"Where?"

"To his company."

I blinked in surprise.

"My husband wants me to visit his company?"

The maid nodded.

"He said he wants to introduce you to the workers."

That alone shocked me.

Alessandro was not the type of man who shared his world with anyone.

Yet somehow… he was bringing me into it.

"Alright," I said finally.

She helped me prepare for the day. A simple but elegant dress was chosen for me—classy but not too formal. When I finished getting ready, I looked at my reflection in the mirror.

For the first time since the wedding, I felt like I was stepping into his world.

And I wasn't sure if I was ready.

Outside, Alessandro was already waiting beside the car.

He looked as sharp and composed as always, dressed in a dark suit that fit him perfectly.

When he saw me walking toward him, his eyes paused on me for a brief moment.

Not cold.

Not distant.

Just… observing.

"You're ready," he said calmly.

"Yes."

He opened the car door for me like a gentleman.

That small gesture still surprised me.

The drive was quiet.

But not uncomfortable.

As the car moved through the city streets, I glanced at him from the corner of my eye.

His attention remained on the road.

His expression unreadable.

Finally, the car stopped in front of a large modern building.

Tall.

Elegant.

Powerful.

"This is your company?" I asked.

"Yes."

Alessandro stepped out first, then opened the door for me.

The moment we walked inside, the atmosphere changed.

Workers moved quickly around the building. Some stopped when they noticed Alessandro.

Respect filled their eyes.

Fear too.

"Good morning, boss," several of them greeted.

He gave small nods as we walked past.

Then his hand suddenly rested lightly on my lower back.

The contact surprised me.

"This is my wife," he said firmly.

"This is Sofia."

Some workers immediately smiled.

"Welcome, Mrs. Alessandro."

"It's an honor to meet you."

"We've heard so much about you."

Their kindness made me relax slightly.

But not everyone looked pleased.

A few workers exchanged strange glances.

Cold.

Judging.

Like they didn't like the idea of me being there.

I felt Alessandro's hand press slightly more firmly against my back.

A silent reassurance.

Or perhaps a warning.

We continued walking deeper into the building.

"This company produces wine," Alessandro explained.

"But not ordinary wine."

I looked around as we passed several large rooms filled with equipment and wooden barrels.

"It's beautiful," I admitted.

He didn't respond, but I noticed the faintest hint of satisfaction in his expression.

Then suddenly, a loud noise echoed from down the hallway.

A shout.

Followed by another.

My body tensed.

"What was that?" I asked.

Alessandro's expression instantly changed.

The warmth disappeared.

His eyes turned cold.

Dangerous.

"I'll handle it," he said quietly.

But curiosity pulled me forward.

"I want to see."

For a moment, he looked like he might refuse.

Then he sighed softly.

"Stay behind me."

We walked toward the noise.

Two guards stood outside a large room.

One of them nodded respectfully.

"Boss, we caught him."

My stomach twisted.

Caught who?

Inside the room, a man was kneeling on the floor.

His face bruised.

Blood stained the corner of his mouth.

Two guards held his arms tightly.

"He's the one stealing from the company," one guard explained.

"There's been missing money for weeks. We finally traced it back to him."

The man shook violently.

"Please… please forgive me," he begged.

"I needed the money."

Alessandro stepped forward slowly.

The calmness in his movements made the room feel colder.

"How much?" he asked quietly.

"Thousands," the guard replied.

Silence filled the room.

Then Alessandro crouched down in front of the man.

For a moment, he simply stared at him.

Cold.

Unblinking.

"You stole from me," Alessandro said softly.

The man started crying.

"I'm sorry! Please—"

Before he could finish, Alessandro grabbed his collar violently and slammed him against the floor.

The sound echoed through the room.

My breath caught in my throat.

The Alessandro I had seen yesterday…

The man who laughed with me at the beach…

Was gone.

In his place stood something darker.

Something terrifying.

"You think this is a game?" Alessandro's voice dropped dangerously.

"You steal from my company… and expect mercy?"

The man trembled.

"Please—"

Alessandro grabbed a metal rod from the table nearby.

My heart nearly stopped.

Without thinking, I stepped forward.

"Alessandro!"

My voice echoed through the room.

Everything froze.

He turned slowly toward me.

And for the first time since entering the room… he noticed I was there.

Our eyes met.

Fear ran through my entire body.

Because now I saw it clearly.

The truth behind the man I married.

The beast behind the gentleman.

And for the first time…

I wondered if I had just walked into a world far darker than I ever imagined.

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Take her to my office," he told one of the guards quietly.

"I'll join her later."

The tall guard escorted me to the office.

My hands were trembling.

My thoughts kept returning to the man kneeling on the floor.

Maybe I should have stayed.

Maybe Alessandro really was the monster I feared.

A few minutes later, the door opened.

Alessandro walked in.

"Hey, piccola," he said softly.

"I'm sorry you had to see that."

I looked at him.

"What are you going to do with him?" I asked.

His eyes held mine.

"You saved him from his misery."

"I don't believe you," I said.

He smiled slightly.

"Piccola… I'll take you somewhere this evening."

He left the office before I could reply.

I sat there alone, my thoughts spinning.

How could I be falling for a man like him?

A dangerous man.

A monster.

Yet Alessandro's image kept returning to my mind again and again.

Something I couldn't control.

That was a sin I couldn't escape.

Later that evening, Alessandro returned.

"It's time," he said.

I nodded and followed him to the car.

The drive was silent.

My mind was still replaying what I had seen earlier.

Suddenly, he pulled the car over.

Before I could ask why, a man walked past the car.

My eyes widened.

It was him.

The same man who had been begging for his life earlier.

He was alive.

I slowly turned to Alessandro.

He smiled faintly.

"Hope I answered your question, piccola."

I stared at him, shocked.

So he hadn't killed him.

"You know," Alessandro said quietly, "you saved that poor man."

Something warm stirred inside my chest.

And deep down…

I was proud of him.

The car pulled back onto the road after the man disappeared down the sidewalk. I kept staring through the window for a moment, still trying to process what had just happened.

He was alive.

Alessandro had let him go.

I slowly turned to look at my husband. His eyes remained on the road, calm and unreadable as always, as if sparing a life was nothing unusual for him.

The silence inside the car felt different now.

Lighter.

After a few minutes, the city lights began to grow brighter around us. Restaurants, shops, and people walking along the sidewalks filled the streets with life.

Alessandro finally spoke.

"Are you hungry, piccola?"

I blinked slightly before nodding.

"Yes… I think I am."

He pulled the car into a quiet but elegant restaurant. Soft music drifted through the air as we stepped inside. The warm lights and gentle atmosphere made everything feel peaceful.

Very different from what I had seen earlier that day.

We sat across from each other, and for the first time, I noticed how relaxed Alessandro seemed. The hard edge that usually surrounded him had softened.

Dinner was surprisingly comfortable.

We talked a little—nothing too serious. Simple things. The food. The city. Even the wine his company produced.

At some point, I caught myself smiling.

And he noticed.

His eyes lingered on me for a moment longer than usual.

After dinner, I thought we would go home.

But instead, Alessandro drove us to a movie theater.

"You like movies?" he asked.

I laughed softly.

"I haven't been to one in years."

"Then tonight is a good night to start again."

The movie was simple and lighthearted, but I barely paid attention to the screen.

I kept noticing him beside me.

The way he leaned back in his seat.

The quiet way he watched everything around him.

The powerful man who terrified an entire room earlier… now sitting beside me in the dark like an ordinary person.

By the time we returned home, the night air was cool and calm.

I turned toward him before heading inside.

"Thank you," I said sincerely.

"For today."

He studied me quietly.

"And… thank you for letting that man go."

Something flickered in his eyes, something softer than before.

"You're welcome, piccola."

A smile spread across my face before I could stop it.

Without thinking, I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around him in a quick hug.

For a brief moment, he seemed surprised.

Then I pulled back, still smiling.

"Goodnight, Alessandro."

"Goodnight."

I walked inside, my heart feeling strangely light.

For the first time since our marriage…

It all started to make sense.
