Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Kael’s Frustration

The classroom buzzed with excitement, the usual morning chatter echoing off the walls. Sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating dust motes dancing lazily in the air.

Kael Thorn's eyes, however, were anything but calm. He clenched his fists under the desk, jaw tight, watching Ocean Counter quietly organize his books.

"Why… why can't I beat him?" Kael muttered, barely audible. His rival's casual aura, the calm tilt of his head, the faint smile — it drove him to frustration.

Ocean Counter noticed, of course. But he did not comment. He merely sat down, his brown eyes meeting Kael's for a fraction of a second. It was enough.

Kael had challenged him countless times. Every duel, every friendly spar, every magical contest ended the same way: Ocean subtly bending reality to favor outcomes without ever raising a hand.

Today, Kael had a new plan. He had studied magic theories, probabilities, and counter spells all night. He had crafted strategies to try to "force a win," but as usual… it was irrelevant.

Ocean's Limitless Magic adjusted automatically. Probabilities shifted. Every misstep Kael thought he'd exploited corrected itself before it could matter. Every counterspell he prepared evaporated into nothing, not by force, but because the world refused to allow failure in Ocean's presence.

Kael groaned in frustration, leaning back in his chair. Lyra Mistwind, sitting nearby, noticed the tension but did not comment. To her, Ocean was just… calm as always.

"Why do I feel like I'm fighting myself more than him?" Kael whispered, almost to no one.

Ocean's subtle gaze drifted to him. His presence alone was enough to redirect Kael's energy, reshaping outcomes imperceptibly. Kael would continue to grow, yes — but always under the guidance of a reality he couldn't control, a subtle hand that nudged him toward improvement without anyone realizing why.

The teacher, Eira Lumina, stepped forward to start the morning lesson, oblivious to the silent war of probability and outcomes playing out between the two boys. Ocean Counter listened politely, nodded occasionally, and subtly let the world itself bend to ensure the lesson flowed smoothly.

Even at his most ordinary moments — adjusting a book, brushing hair from his forehead, offering a faint nod to a friend — Ocean Counter's presence redefined success, failure, and possibility around him.

Kael sighed, muttering, "I'll never surpass him… not like this."

Ocean smiled faintly to himself. And that's the point.
