Chapter 11: The Predator's Peace
The dissolution of Trial 35 was different from the others. There was no gentle fade-to-white. Instead, the world of Bastion Grey shattered like a stained-glass window, the shards of the simulation being sucked into Arthur's Karmic Ledger as raw data and essence.
Arthur stood in the center of the Nexus Plaza, his breath hitching as the transition hit. The mud and blood were gone, replaced by his clean, grey tunic. His shoulder no longer bled, but the phantom ache of the stab wound remained—a psychological scar that the system couldn't heal.

The Plaza was silent. Thousands of souls—warriors, mages, and commoners—had been watching the "Sovereign Feed" on the central Obelisk. They didn't see a hero. They saw a man who had turned a battlefield into a foreclosure.
"He didn't even swing a sword," someone whispered from the crowd. "He just... turned off the lights."
Arthur ignored them. He was looking for Kael.
He found the soldier sitting by a fountain, staring at his hands. Kael was no longer a translucent shade. He looked solid, his skin glowing with the healthy vitality of a soul that had been "invested in."
"General," Kael said, standing up quickly. He didn't bow, but the respect in his eyes was heavier than any protocol.
"You're not a soldier anymore, Kael," Arthur said, stopping beside him. "You're a 'Stakeholder.' The essence from that clear was distributed to everyone who stayed in the Inner Sanctum. You have enough credits now to bypass the next three trials and find a peaceful sector."
Kael looked at the massive Obelisk, then back at Arthur. "I was a clerk on Earth, sir. I spent my life being a 'unit.' For five minutes in that room, I felt like a man. I don't want a 'peaceful sector.' I want to see what you do to the 38th."
Arthur's expression darkened. "The 38th isn't a war, Kael. It's a funeral. You'd be better off taking the money and running."
Before Kael could respond, the air in the Plaza turned freezing. A pillar of white light descended from the highest peak of the Nexus, the "Council Heights."
An Overseer, draped in robes that shifted like liquid mercury, floated toward Arthur. It had no face, only a mask etched with the symbol of the Ten Legends.
"Arthur Wu," the Overseer's voice was a chorus of a thousand echoes. "The Council of the Ten acknowledges your... unique methodology. You have disrupted the balance of the 35th Scale. You have humiliated a scion of the Heights."
The crowd drew back in terror. To be addressed by an Overseer was usually a prelude to erasure.
"Humiliation is just a byproduct of a bad business model," Arthur said, crossing his arms. "Vex was overleveraged. I simply facilitated the market correction."
"The Council does not care for your 'Market'," the Overseer replied. "However, they recognize a 'Sovereign' when they see one. You are summoned to the Observatory of the Ten. They wish to offer you a 'Partnership'."
Lirael Voss stepped out from the shadows of a nearby pillar, her silver spear crackling with nervous energy. "Arthur, don't go. A 'Partnership' with the Ten is just a fancy word for becoming their pet auditor. They'll clip your wings and own your gravity."
Arthur looked at Lirael, then at the Overseer. His businessman's heart was racing. He knew this move. This was the "Acquisition Offer" made to a disruptive startup. They couldn't beat him in the field, so they were trying to buy him out.
"If I refuse?" Arthur asked.
"The 36th and 37th Trials will be adjusted to 'Maximum Friction'," the Overseer said flatly. "The bank will not be so kind to your 'Ledger' next time."
Arthur looked at his hands. He thought of the silver thimble. He thought of Trial 38, looming like a black hole in his future. If he had the backing of the Ten, he could skip it. He could buy his way past the silence. He could win without the pain.
He looked at Kael, then at Lirael. Finally, he looked at the Overseer.
"Tell the Council I'll come," Arthur said. "But tell them to bring their checkbooks. I don't sign contracts I haven't drafted myself."
