The moment Arin's hand touched the ancient seal, the entire forest exploded with light.
A blinding surge of energy burst outward from the gate, throwing Arin backward through the air like a leaf caught in a storm. He slammed against the ground several meters away, his vision spinning.
For a moment he heard nothing.
No roars.
No wind.
No voices.
Only silence.
Then the world returned all at once.
The forest shook violently as waves of energy rippled outward from the gate. The massive skeletal creature trying to emerge from the portal screeched in fury as the glowing symbols around the gate burned brighter than ever before.
Lira struggled to stand as the ground beneath her feet trembled.
"Arin!"
She ran toward him through the chaos.
Arin slowly pushed himself up.
His hand still burned where it had touched the seal. Strange glowing marks had appeared across his palm, like fragments of the ancient symbols carved into the gate.
The balance inside him had changed.
It felt stronger.
But also heavier.
The giant beast that had first escaped from the gate roared and slammed its claws into the skeletal monster's body, trying to force it back through the portal.
But the skeletal creature was enormous.
Much larger than anything they had seen so far.
Its hollow skull pushed further through the gate, its glowing blue eyes burning with cold fury.
"Too late," the creature hissed.
Its voice sounded like ice cracking across a frozen lake.
Arin's chest tightened.
The gate behind the monster pulsed again.
The symbols flickered between light and shadow.
The prison seal was unstable.
Lira grabbed Arin's shoulder.
"What happened when you touched the seal?"
Arin looked at his glowing palm.
"I think… it woke something."
The air suddenly grew colder.
A deep vibration spread through the clearing.
But this vibration felt different.
Older.
Deeper.
The skeletal creature paused for a moment.
Even it seemed to notice the change.
From deep within the earth, something responded.
A low echo rolled through the forest floor like distant thunder.
Arin turned slowly toward the gate.
The swirling darkness inside the portal was changing.
Not opening.
Not closing.
Transforming.
The shadow version of Arin suddenly stepped out from behind a broken pillar of stone.
"Well," it said quietly.
"That's new."
Lira groaned.
"Oh great, the creepy clone is back."
The shadow version studied the glowing symbols carefully.
"You didn't close the gate," it told Arin.
"I didn't?"
"No."
"You activated the deeper seal."
Arin frowned.
"Deeper seal?"
Before the shadow could answer, the ground split open behind the gate.
Ancient roots burst upward from the soil like massive serpents. They twisted together rapidly, forming a gigantic structure beneath the portal.
Lira stepped back in shock.
"What is that?"
The Watcher's voice echoed suddenly across the clearing.
"The Heart of Willowmist."
Arin turned.
The armored Watcher had arrived at the edge of the clearing, its enormous form stepping slowly through the forest.
"You decided to help after all?" Lira shouted.
"I decided the situation had become… unacceptable."
The Watcher stopped near the gate and looked up at the skeletal creature climbing through it.
"The deeper seal protects the prison when the surface gates fail."
Arin looked between the gate and the massive roots rising from the ground.
"So the forest itself is part of the prison?"
"Yes."
The Watcher raised its armored hand.
"These roots are older than the gates."
"Older than the Architects."
The skeletal creature screeched violently.
It slammed its claws into the ground, trying to force its way fully into the world.
The giant beast fighting beside them roared and attacked again, slamming into the creature's side.
But the skeletal monster was still pushing forward.
Half of its enormous body was already outside the gate.
Lira looked at Arin.
"Your seal thing didn't stop it."
Arin clenched his fists.
"Not yet."
The glowing symbols on his hand began pulsing again.
Strange images flashed through his mind.
Ancient forests.
Massive gates buried beneath mountains.
A figure standing in darkness surrounded by thirteen glowing seals.
Arin staggered slightly.
The shadow version caught him before he fell.
"You're seeing the memories," the shadow said.
"What memories?" Arin asked.
"The prison's memories."
Arin looked at the gate again.
Suddenly he understood something.
"There's another seal."
The Watcher turned its masked face toward him.
"Correct."
"The deeper seal requires two forces."
Arin frowned.
"Two?"
The Watcher nodded slowly.
"Light and shadow."
Arin's eyes widened.
He looked at the shadow version of himself.
The shadow smiled.
"Oh no."
"Don't look at me like that."
Arin stepped toward him.
"You're part of me."
"Yes."
"Which means you're part of the balance."
The shadow folded its arms.
"I'm also the dangerous part."
Lira crossed her arms.
"Right now dangerous is better than dead."
Behind them, the skeletal monster let out a thunderous roar.
Its giant arm slammed into the ground, creating a massive crater.
The gate shook violently.
Cracks spread across the ancient stone ring.
If the gate broke completely…
the prison would collapse.
Arin stepped closer to his shadow.
"We need to work together."
The shadow tilted its head.
"Do we?"
Arin looked directly at him.
"If that thing escapes, this world ends."
The shadow was silent for a long moment.
Then it sighed.
"Fine."
"But if this goes wrong, I'm blaming you."
The Watcher pointed toward the massive root structure rising beneath the gate.
"The Heart awaits the bearer."
The roots twisted open, revealing a glowing chamber beneath the portal.
At its center floated a massive crystal formed from light and darkness intertwined.
Arin felt the balance inside him surge violently.
"That's the real seal."
"Yes," the Watcher said.
"But it requires two bearers."
Arin stepped toward the chamber.
The shadow followed reluctantly.
Behind them the monsters continued fighting, their roars shaking the forest.
Lira stood near the entrance of the chamber.
"I'll hold the big skeleton off as long as I can."
Arin stared at her.
"You're not serious."
Lira smirked.
"I'm not planning to win."
"Just survive."
Arin and his shadow stepped inside the chamber.
The crystal pulsed with ancient power.
The moment they approached it, the forest around them seemed to breathe.
Roots moved slowly beneath the ground.
The gate above them trembled violently.
The skeletal monster screamed as it tried to break free.
Arin raised his glowing hand toward the crystal.
The shadow raised his dark one beside it.
Light and shadow touched the ancient seal together.
For a moment the world held its breath.
Then the true prison awakened.

If your darker side was the only thing capable of saving the world, would you trust it… or try to seal it away forever?
