Chapter 44 - Chapter 44A — Ripples Beyond the Mountains

The Hall of Origin grew silent after the jade ring's light dimmed.

Yet the air remained charged.

Seo Joon stood before the Heaven-Seeking Resonance Array, its silver threads now rotating slowly once more, as if nothing extraordinary had occurred.

But everyone in the chamber knew otherwise.

The ripple had traveled far.

Too far.

The Sect Master clasped his hands behind his back.

"It has begun."

One of the elders stepped forward, voice low. "The resonance wave extended beyond our defensive formations. If the Shadow Abyss Cult sensed it—"

"They did," the Sect Master interrupted calmly.

Seo Joon's gaze remained fixed on the jade ring.

"Not just them," he said quietly.

The elders turned toward him.

He could still feel it.

A faint echo.

Something had answered.

Far beyond the Heavenly Flow Sect's mountain range—

Across barren valleys where spiritual energy flowed thin and wild—

There stood a towering obsidian structure carved into the side of a black cliff.

Within its highest chamber—

A man draped in layered dark robes opened his eyes slowly.

He sat upon a throne of carved stone, one hand resting against the armrest, fingers tapping once.

Only once.

But the space around him distorted faintly at the motion.

A disciple knelt below him, trembling.

"Cult Leader… the signal we detected before—"

"I felt it," the man replied softly.

His voice was calm.

Measured.

"Stronger this time."

The kneeling disciple hesitated. "Does this confirm the vessel's awakening?"

A faint smile curved beneath the shadow of his hood.

"No."

"It confirms the sect has chosen to reveal him."

Back inside the Hall of Origin—

Seo Joon finally turned from the altar.

"You used it again," he said quietly.

The Sect Master did not deny it.

"We needed confirmation."

"And now?"

"Now," the Sect Master replied evenly, "we prepare."

The words settled heavily.

Seo Joon felt no anger.

Only clarity.

"They will come," he said.

"Yes."

The Sect Master's gaze sharpened.

"But not openly. Not yet."

As Seo Joon ascended back toward the surface, the mountain corridors felt different.

The illusion of peaceful seclusion had thinned.

He stepped into open air just as dusk painted the sky in deep violet.

Seol Ah stood waiting near the stone stairway.

She searched his expression immediately.

"They showed you."

"Yes."

Her shoulders eased slightly.

"And?"

Seo Joon looked toward the horizon.

"They are not the only ones searching."

A breeze lifted her long hair as she followed his gaze.

The mountains seemed endless.

But beyond them lay factions older and darker than either of them fully understood.

That night—

Seo Joon could not sleep.

He sat upon the roof of his courtyard residence, watching clouds drift across the moon.

The Abyssal Heart pulsed steadily.

Controlled.

But beneath that rhythm—

A faint pull.

Not downward toward the sealed entity.

Outward.

As if threads were connecting him to distant points across the continent.

He exhaled slowly.

"Balance," he murmured.

The word felt heavier now.

Balance did not mean peace.

It meant standing at the center of opposing forces.

Suddenly—

A subtle shift in air pressure brushed against his senses.

Not aggressive.

Not violent.

But intrusive.

His eyes snapped open.

Someone was watching.

He did not move.

Instead, he allowed his awareness to expand gently.

Rooflines.

Courtyard shadows.

Trees beyond the wall.

There.

A flicker of distorted space near the eastern boundary.

An observer cloaked in concealment technique.

Not an elder.

Not a sect disciple.

An outsider.

Seo Joon rose slowly to his feet.

He stepped forward once—

And the Abyssal Heart pulsed sharply.

The distortion wavered.

The concealed presence stiffened.

They had not expected to be detected.

Seo Joon did not release killing intent.

He did not shout.

He simply spoke.

"You came faster than I thought."

Silence.

Then—

The distortion retreated instantly.

Vanishing beyond the mountain perimeter.

Testing.

Only testing.

Moments later—

An alarm chime echoed faintly across the sect's defensive barrier.

The elders had sensed the breach attempt.

Lights flared briefly atop the central peak.

Seo Joon remained standing on the rooftop.

Calm.

They were already probing.

And this was only the beginning.

High above the clouds—

The Sect Master observed from a distant terrace.

He had felt the intrusion.

He had also felt something else.

Seo Joon had not reacted with force.

He had restrained himself.

Again.

A faint nod crossed the elder's face.

"The instrument chose correctly," he murmured.

Far away—

The cloaked observer knelt before the dark-robed leader once more.

"He sensed me instantly."

The Cult Leader's expression remained unreadable.

"Good," he said quietly.

The disciple hesitated. "Shall we proceed to phase two?"

The Cult Leader's fingers tapped the throne armrest once more.

"Not yet."

His eyes gleamed faintly beneath the hood.

"Let him grow."

The chamber fell silent.

Because predators did not fear strength.

They anticipated it.

Back at the Heavenly Flow Sect—

Seo Joon stood beneath the moonlight until dawn.

He could no longer pretend to be just another outer disciple.

The world beyond the mountains had taken notice.

And the ripples from the instrument beneath the sect were spreading wider with every breath he took.

He closed his eyes briefly.

The Abyssal Heart beat once.

Twice.

Steady.

Controlled.

Waiting.
