Chapter 57 - Frame 57: The Final Cut — Destination Unknown

The neon lights of Suzhou shimmered in the puddles of a light winter drizzle, reflecting a city that was finally exhaling after the tension of finals. For the four of them, the heavy silence of the examination halls had been replaced by the frantic, lighter energy of departure.

In a small, steam-filled dumpling shop tucked away in a narrow alley near the Pingjiang District, the air smelled of ginger, black vinegar, and the promise of freedom.

They sat huddled around a low wooden table, four bowls of soup steaming between them. Seo-yoon looked pale but relaxed, her lavender scarf tucked into her coat. She had spent the last two hours packing her small rented house in the historic Pingjiang District—a place that finally felt like a home, yet felt strangely empty without the daily routine of seeing the others.

Mei Lin and Zhang Wei were in a rare state of truce. Since Suzhou was their birthplace, "going home" just meant moving their laundry to their parents' houses a few blocks away. They were restless, craving an escape from the familiar streets.

"We need a trip," Lin declared, dipping a dumpling into chili oil. "Somewhere fast, bright, and completely different from these old canals."

"I agree," Wei chimed in, leaning back. "Somewhere where the buildings touch the clouds. Any ideas, Seo-yoon?"

Seo-yoon looked up from her tea. She had been researching Chinese geography for her next script, and one city had caught her eye—a place of glass, steel, and coastal beauty. "What about Shenzhen? It's a high-tech marvel, but I heard the parks and the coastline are breathtaking this time of year."

The table went silent for a heartbeat.

Yan-chen, who had been quietly checking the train schedules on his phone, suddenly went still. His grip tightened on his chopsticks. Shenzhen. The city of his birth. The city of towering expectations, cold glass offices, and the family legacy he had moved to Suzhou to escape.

"Shenzhen?" Wei's eyes lit up. "The 'Silicon Valley' of the East? That's perfect! Yan-chen, you've never mentioned where you're from exactly, but you'd love the architecture there."

Yan-chen looked at Seo-yoon. She didn't know. She was looking at him with such genuine excitement, her eyes bright with the hope of a new adventure together. He couldn't say no to that look. He couldn't tell her that he had spent years running away from the very skyline she was now dreaming of.

"If that's where you want to go," Yan-chen said, his voice low and steady, concealing the storm of memories rising in his chest, "then we'll go to Shenzhen."

As the meeting broke up, Yan-chen offered to walk Seo-yoon back to her house in the Pingjiang District. They walked along the ancient stone paths, the sound of the canal water lapping against the banks the only music in the night.

When they reached her gate, Seo-yoon paused. She looked at the small, traditional courtyard house she had rented. "It's strange," she whispered. "In Busan, I thought 'home' was just the house my mother lived in. But packing today... I realized I wasn't sad to leave this house. I was only worried about not seeing you every morning."

Yan-chen stepped closer, the cold winter air puffing into white clouds between them. He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb grazing the silver ring she still wore around her neck.

"Home isn't a place on a map, Seo-yoon-ah," he said, his eyes reflecting the soft yellow glow of her porch light. "I've spent my whole life trying to find a place where I fit. I thought it was Suzhou. I thought it was the lab."

He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers. "But I realized today... home is wherever you are standing. Even if it's in a city I swore I'd never go back to."

Seo-yoon smiled, not fully understanding the weight of his words but feeling the sincerity behind them. They stood there for a long moment, two travelers ready to face a high-tech future, unaware that the skyscrapers of Shenzhen held secrets that would test their new foundation.
