Chapter 59 - Frame 59: The City of Glass and Cold Shoulders

The first night in Shenzhen didn't sparkle the way the travel brochures promised. Instead of a grand celebration, the group found themselves fractured.

Outside the hotel, the Nanshan District was a neon labyrinth. Giant LED screens wrapped around skyscrapers, pulsing with high-tech advertisements that turned the sidewalk into a kaleidoscope of synthetic colors.

Seo-yoon, Wei, and Lin walked toward a nearby glass-walled mall, but the energy was dampened. Usually, Yan-chen's quiet presence acted as the "north star" for their group, but his empty chair at the restaurant felt like a gaping hole.

"He's probably just crashed," Wei said, trying to lift the mood as they sat in a modern fusion restaurant. "You know how he is. When he hits a wall, he hits it hard."

"It's not just exhaustion, Wei," Lin said, poking at her grilled sea bass. "He looked like he was seeing ghosts the moment we stepped off the train. I've known him for years, but this... this is a different kind of silence."

Seo-yoon barely tasted her food. She kept looking at the entrance of the restaurant, hoping to see a familiar black hoodie and a pair of steady, dark eyes. The awkwardness of his withdrawal was a physical ache in her chest. She realized that in Suzhou, she was the one who was lost, and he was her guide. Here, in the heart of his "home," the roles had flipped, but he wasn't letting her in.

When they returned to the hotel, the group split for the night. The girls took one suite, and the boys took the other.

In the Boys' Room: The suite was sleek and ultra-modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing artery of the city. Wei dropped his bag and looked over at Yan-chen, who was standing by the window, his reflection ghostly against the backdrop of the Tencent and Baidu towers.

"Hey," Wei said softly. "You want to talk about it? Or are we just going to pretend you didn't look like you were walking into a funeral today?"

Yan-chen didn't turn around. He watched a black sedan pull into a high-security gate across the street. "Go to sleep, Wei. It's just been a long semester."

"Right. And I'm the King of England," Wei muttered, but he knew better than to push. He climbed into his bed, leaving the bedside lamp on for a while before eventually drifting off to the hum of the city.

Yan-chen remained by the glass long after Wei's breathing became rhythmic. He pulled the silver ring from beneath his shirt, rolling it between his fingers. He was in the city that built him, the city that expected him to be a titan of industry, yet all he wanted was to be back in a drafty lab in Suzhou with the girl who saw him as a person, not a legacy.

In the Girls' Room: Seo-yoon lay awake, the silk sheets feeling too smooth, too artificial. Beside her, Lin was already fast asleep, exhausted from the travel.

The moonlight in Shenzhen was filtered through the blue tint of the skyscraper windows, giving the room an underwater feel. Seo-yoon checked her phone—no messages. She thought about the kiss in the studio, the way he had held her as if she were the only thing keeping him grounded.

She stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the sprawling metropolis. Somewhere in this sea of lights, Yan-chen was awake, fighting a battle he hadn't shared with her.

"Don't leave me behind, Yan-chen," she whispered to the glass. "I can't walk this bridge if you're the one pulling away."

As the clock ticked toward 3:00 AM, the city of Shenzhen never truly slept, its millions of lights flickering like a circuit board. But in the quiet of the hotel, the distance between the two rooms felt longer than the train ride from Suzhou.
