Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Sanctuary’s Call

The clearing still crackled with the fading echo of moonlight.

Wolves panted, injured, shaken. Shadows dissolved into smoke, retreating into the forest like a tide pulled back by an unseen force. The air smelled of burnt magic and fear.

Rylan held me against his chest, breath ragged, heart pounding so hard I felt it through his ribs.

"Lyra," he whispered, voice breaking. "I thought I lost you."

I swallowed, fingers curling into his shirt. "You didn't."

He pulled back just enough to look at me, golden eyes wide and raw. "I will never let him take you."

The bond pulsed — warm, fierce, unbreakable.

Rowan approached, limping slightly, blood streaking his arm. "We need to move. Now."

Kade nodded, wiping shadow residue from his claws. "Lucien's projection was stronger this time. He's close."

Rylan stiffened. "Too close."

Rowan scanned the treeline. "We won't survive another wave like that."

Rylan looked at me — and I felt the decision forming in him before he spoke.

"We go to the sanctuary."

Rowan frowned. "Tonight?"

"Yes."

Kade hesitated. "Alpha… the sanctuary is days away."

"Not if we take the river path," Rylan said. "It cuts the journey in half."

Rowan shook his head. "That path is dangerous."

Rylan's voice hardened. "So is staying here."

Rowan didn't argue.

Because he knew Rylan was right.

Lucien wasn't retreating.

He was regrouping.

Preparing.

Hunting.

And he wanted me.

Rylan turned to the packs. "We leave within the hour. Gather supplies. Tend to the wounded. Stay in pairs."

Moonshadow and Bloodfang wolves moved instantly, the two packs blending with surprising ease — fear and necessity forging a temporary unity.

Rylan turned back to me. "Are you hurt?"

I shook my head. "No. Just… shaken."

He brushed a thumb across my cheek, gentle despite the claws still half‑extended. "You were incredible."

I blinked. "I didn't do anything."

"You did," he said softly. "You called the moon."

My breath caught. "I didn't mean to."

"You didn't have to," he whispered. "It answered you anyway."

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, certain.

Rowan cleared his throat loudly. "If you two are done staring into each other's souls, we have work to do."

Rylan shot him a glare. "Jealous?"

Rowan snorted. "Of you? Never."

Kade muttered, "Gods, they're both insufferable."

I sighed. "Can we please focus?"

Rylan nodded. "Right. The sanctuary."

Rowan crossed his arms. "Tell us everything. Now."

Rylan hesitated, then spoke quietly. "The sanctuary is a moon‑blessed site. Ancient. Sacred. It predates the packs. Predates the territories. Predates everything."

Kade nodded. "It's said the first moon‑marked wolf was born there."

Rowan raised a brow. "And you think it will protect us?"

Rylan shook his head. "Not us. Her."

My stomach twisted. "Why me?"

Rylan met my gaze. "Because you're marked. And the sanctuary amplifies moon‑marked wolves."

Rowan frowned. "Amplifies how?"

Rylan hesitated. "Power. Strength. Sight. Connection."

Kade added, "And protection. Shadows can't enter."

Rowan exhaled. "So it's a safe haven."

Rylan nodded. "Yes."

"And Lucien?" Rowan asked.

Rylan's jaw tightened. "He'll follow. But he won't be able to enter."

Rowan frowned. "Then what's the plan? Hide there forever?"

"No," Rylan said. "We prepare there. We train. We strengthen the bond. And when the time comes…"

He looked at me.

"We fight him together."

The bond pulsed — hot, electric, overwhelming.

I swallowed. "Rylan… I don't know how to use this power."

"You will," he said softly. "I'll teach you."

Rowan raised a brow. "You? Teach her?"

Rylan glared. "Yes."

Rowan smirked. "This should be entertaining."

Kade sighed. "We're doomed."

I rolled my eyes. "Can we please move before Lucien comes back?"

Rylan nodded. "Pack up. We leave in thirty minutes."

Later — preparing to leave

The ridge buzzed with frantic energy as wolves gathered supplies, tended wounds, and formed travel groups. The air was thick with fear and determination.

I stood near the treeline, watching the moon rise higher, its light softer now but still warm against my skin.

Rylan approached quietly. "You're thinking too loudly."

I huffed. "You can't hear my thoughts."

"No," he said. "But I can feel them."

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, intimate.

I looked at him. "Rylan… what if I can't do this? What if the moon made a mistake?"

He stepped closer, voice low. "The moon doesn't make mistakes."

"You don't know that."

"Yes," he said softly, "I do."

I swallowed. "Why?"

He brushed a strand of hair behind my ear, fingers lingering. "Because it chose you."

My breath caught.

Before I could respond, Rowan shouted from across the clearing. "Rylan! We're ready!"

Rylan exhaled. "Time to go."

I nodded. "Lead the way."

He hesitated. "Lyra… stay close to me. No matter what."

"I will."

He offered his hand.

I took it.

The bond pulsed — warm, fierce, unbreakable.

Rylan squeezed my fingers gently. "We'll reach the sanctuary by dawn if we move fast."

Rowan groaned. "Dawn? You didn't mention that part."

Kade smirked. "Try to keep up, Alpha."

Rowan glared. "I hate all of you."

Rylan didn't look back. "Good. You'll run faster."

Despite everything — the fear, the danger, the uncertainty — I almost smiled.

Almost.

Because as we stepped into the forest, the wind shifted.

Cold.

Sharp.

Wrong.

Rylan froze.

Rowan stiffened.

Kade growled.

I whispered, "What is it?"

Rylan's voice was barely audible.

"He's watching."

The shadows between the trees rippled.

Lucien's voice drifted through the darkness.

"Run, little wolves. Run while you can."

Rylan pulled me closer, eyes blazing.

"We're not running," he growled. "We're going to end this."

And together — two packs, one bond, one impossible destiny — we disappeared into the forest.
