Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: The Shadow That Climbed the Mountain

The Ridge shook.

Not with the gentle hum of ancient magic.

Not with the pulse of the Echoes.

But with something heavier.

Darker.

Closer.

Lucien.

The air in the arena thickened, pressing against my lungs like invisible hands. The moon overhead flickered, its silver glow dimming as if something enormous had stepped between it and the world.

Rylan appeared at the far end of the arena, stumbling through a curtain of golden light. His chest rose and fell with sharp breaths, his skin still glowing faintly from his battle.

Our eyes met.

The bond pulsed — warm, fierce, relieved.

"Lyra," he breathed.

I ran to him.

He caught me instantly, arms wrapping around me, pulling me close as if he needed to feel I was real. His forehead pressed against mine, his breath warm against my lips.

"You're okay," he whispered.

"So are you."

He exhaled shakily. "I thought—"

"I know."

The bond pulsed again — steady, grounding, alive.

But the moment didn't last.

Because the Ridge trembled again.

Harder.

Deeper.

Wrong.

Rylan pulled back, eyes narrowing. "He's here."

I swallowed. "Lucien."

"No."

Rylan's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Something with him."

The Echoes appeared around the arena — dozens of them, their forms flickering violently, their light dimming as if something was draining them.

Rowan and Kade burst into the arena from the tunnel entrance, both panting, both wide‑eyed.

Rowan shouted, "We have a problem!"

Kade added, "A big one!"

Rylan snapped, "What happened?"

Rowan pointed behind him. "The packs are fine. But the forest—"

Kade finished, "—isn't."

Rylan stiffened. "Explain."

Rowan swallowed. "The shadows are moving."

Kade nodded. "Like… alive."

My stomach twisted. "Revenants?"

Rowan shook his head. "Worse."

Kade whispered, "Much worse."

The Ridge trembled again.

A crack split across the arena floor, glowing with black light.

Rylan grabbed my hand. "Stay close."

The Echoes stepped forward, their forms flickering like dying flames.

"He is coming."

Rylan growled, "We know."

"Not him."

The Echoes' voices layered, overlapping, trembling.

"What he has awakened."

The crack widened.

A cold wind swept through the arena — sharp, unnatural, carrying the scent of rot and old magic.

Rowan muttered, "I hate that smell."

Kade nodded. "Same."

The Echoes raised their heads.

"The Hollow stirs."

Rylan froze. "The Hollow? That's a myth."

"It was."

The crack pulsed.

"Until he called to it."

My breath caught. "Lucien woke something."

"He woke everything."

The arena floor split open.

Shadows poured upward — thick, heavy, swirling like smoke and tar. They twisted into shapes that weren't wolves, weren't human, weren't anything that belonged in this world.

The Echoes flickered violently.

"You must leave."

Rylan shook his head. "We're not running."

"You must leave."

"We're not leaving the packs."

"You must leave."

Rylan snapped, "WHY?"

The Echoes' voices dropped to a whisper.

"Because he is coming for you."

The shadows surged upward.

And Lucien stepped out of them.

Lucien Ascends

He wasn't the Lucien we'd seen before.

Not the shadow‑twisted wolf.

Not the corrupted Alpha.

Not the brother consumed by darkness.

This Lucien was something else.

His skin was pale as moonlight, veins glowing black beneath the surface. His eyes were pure void — no iris, no pupil, just endless darkness. Shadows clung to him like armor, shifting and writhing as if alive.

He looked at Rylan.

And smiled.

"Brother."

Rylan stepped in front of me, golden fire flickering around his hands. "Lucien."

Lucien tilted his head. "You've grown stronger."

Rylan growled, "So have you."

Lucien's smile widened. "Yes."

He stepped forward.

The shadows followed.

"The Hollow answered me."

Rylan stiffened. "You woke it."

Lucien laughed — a sound that made the stone tremble.

"I didn't wake it."

He raised his hand.

Shadows surged upward.

"I joined it."

The Echoes recoiled.

Rowan whispered, "Oh gods."

Kade muttered, "We're dead."

Lucien's gaze slid to me.

My breath caught.

His voice softened.

"And you…"

Rylan snarled, "Don't touch her."

Lucien ignored him.

"You broke the curse."

I swallowed. "Yes."

"You sealed the bond."

"Yes."

Lucien's smile faded.

"You ruined everything."

Rylan stepped forward. "You ruined yourself."

Lucien's eyes darkened.

"No."

The shadows behind him rose like wings.

"I became what I was meant to be."

The Ridge trembled.

The moon dimmed.

The Echoes flickered.

Lucien raised his hand.

"Come, brother."

Rylan growled, "I'm not going anywhere with you."

Lucien's smile sharpened.

"You misunderstand."

He pointed at Rylan.

"I didn't come to take you."

He pointed at me.

"I came to take her."

Rylan roared.

Golden fire exploded from him.

Lucien laughed.

And the shadows surged.

The First Clash

Rylan lunged.

Lucien met him mid‑air.

Gold collided with black.

The impact shook the entire Ridge.

Rowan and Kade were thrown backward. The Echoes flickered violently. The arena floor cracked beneath the force of the collision.

Rylan slashed with golden claws.

Lucien blocked with a wall of shadow.

Rylan struck again.

Lucien countered.

Rylan roared.

Lucien smiled.

They moved too fast for my eyes to follow — flashes of gold and black, sparks of magic, shockwaves that cracked the stone.

I stepped forward.

The bond pulsed — sharp, warning.

Rylan shouted, "LYRA — STAY BACK!"

Lucien's voice cut through the air.

"Yes, Lyra."

He appeared behind me.

"Stay back."

Rylan roared, "NO!"

Lucien reached for me.

I raised my hand.

Silver light erupted from my palm.

Lucien staggered — not far, not much, but enough.

He blinked.

Surprised.

"You've grown."

I stepped back. "You won't take me."

Lucien smiled.

"I already have."

The shadows surged toward me.

Rylan broke free of Lucien's grip, golden fire blazing.

"LYRA!"

Lucien whispered,

"Let's begin."

And the Ridge exploded with light and shadow.
