Chapter 69 - Chapter Sixty-Nine – What the Realm Could Not Erase

The pressure eased—

But the danger did not.

The core still pulsed violently around Dominic, streams of black and silver energy twisting through the air like living storms, but something fundamental had changed.

The realm had stopped trying to erase him.

Now—

It was trying to understand him.

Dominic stood at the center of the core, breathing heavily, his body surrounded by shifting currents of power that no longer tore at him with the same brutality as before.

The connection remained.

Strong.

Stable.

Alive.

And most importantly—

Still his.

Leila felt it clearly now.

Not the fading presence she had feared losing.

Not the hollow emptiness the realm tried to force onto him.

Dominic was still there.

Changed.

But still there.

Her knees nearly gave out from relief alone.

Marcus looked between them in complete disbelief.

"…Wait."

A pause.

"…Did love literally stop reality from collapsing?"

The old man exhaled slowly.

"It's not that simple."

Marcus pointed toward the core immediately.

"It LOOKS that simple!"

The Sovereign remained silent.

But his gaze never left Dominic.

Not curiosity anymore.

Not judgment.

Recognition.

The realm pulsed again.

This time—

Not violently.

Deliberately.

The energy surrounding Dominic slowed, flowing around him instead of crashing into him.

The synchronization had resumed.

But differently than before.

The old man noticed immediately.

"…It accepted his foundation."

Leila looked at him sharply.

"What does that mean?"

"It means the realm stopped trying to remove what anchors him."

A pause.

"It adapted around it instead."

Marcus blinked.

"…So being obsessed with each other actually saved us?"

Leila ignored him completely.

Her attention remained fixed on Dominic.

Because she could still feel the strain inside him.

The transfer was stabilizing—

But it wasn't over.

Not even close.

At the center of the core, Dominic inhaled slowly as the realm moved through him again.

But now it felt different.

Not hostile.

Heavy.

Ancient.

Endless.

But no longer trying to hollow him out.

Instead—

It pressed against him carefully, testing the shape of what he had chosen to remain.

The voice returned.

You refuse separation.

Dominic's answer came without hesitation.

"Yes."

A pause spread through the realm itself.

Then—

Attachment creates vulnerability.

"Maybe."

His gaze lifted slightly toward Leila.

"But it also gives people a reason to endure."

Silence followed.

Not empty silence.

Consideration.

Outside the core, the sky shifted again, but the cracks spreading across it had stopped widening.

Marcus noticed immediately.

"…Okay, that seems less catastrophic."

The old man nodded slightly.

"The balance is stabilizing again."

Leila stepped closer to the edge of the core.

This time—

The world did not stop her.

Not completely.

The pressure remained, but weaker now.

As if the realm itself was uncertain.

Dominic saw her move.

And for the first time since the transfer began—

He smiled.

Small.

Exhausted.

But real.

Leila's chest tightened painfully.

Because that expression reminded her too much of the man she thought this world would eventually erase.

And yet—

He was still fighting to remain himself.

The Sovereign finally spoke again.

"You have altered the process."

Dominic looked toward him.

"Good."

The Sovereign's expression remained unreadable.

"No previous anchor resisted integration this way."

Marcus folded his arms immediately.

"…Yeah, because Dominic has never listened to anyone in his life."

No one disagreed.

The energy around the core surged once more.

But now the movement flowed in patterns instead of chaos, circling Dominic rather than tearing through him.

The transfer was nearing completion.

Leila felt it.

So did the Sovereign.

So did the realm itself.

And with that realization—

Fear returned.

Because stabilizing the transfer meant the choice would become permanent.

Leila's voice lowered slightly.

"…Dominic."

He looked at her immediately.

"If this works…"

She hesitated.

Just briefly.

"…You may never leave this place."

Silence settled again.

Marcus looked away this time.

Even he couldn't joke through that.

Dominic's answer remained calm.

"You will."

Her eyes narrowed instantly.

"That's not enough for me."

The words hit harder than expected.

Because they weren't dramatic.

They were honest.

The realm pulsed again.

And suddenly—

The energy surrounding Dominic tightened sharply.

Not violently.

Final.

The old man stiffened.

"…It's finishing."

Dominic's body tensed as the last wave of synchronization moved through him.

This time the pain returned instantly, forcing a sharp breath from him as the realm pressed fully against his existence one final time.

Not to erase him.

To bind him.

The core exploded outward with light.

The ground shook violently beneath everyone.

The sky fractured completely above them—

Then stopped.

Frozen in place.

Leila's connection to the realm weakened sharply.

She felt it immediately.

The anchor was shifting.

Moving.

Transferring.

Her eyes widened.

"…It's working."

Marcus blinked rapidly.

"…Wait—it's ACTUALLY working?"

But the Sovereign's gaze darkened slightly instead of easing.

"…No."

Everyone looked toward him instantly.

The realm pulsed again.

Wrong this time.

Unstable.

Dominic felt it immediately too.

Something inside the transfer—

Had changed.

The voice of the realm returned once more.

But now—

There was another presence beneath it.

Ancient.

Vast.

Awake.

Two cannot hold what was meant for one.

The core trembled violently.

The balance shifted again.

And suddenly—

Something deep beneath the realm began to rise.

Marcus stared as the ground cracked open far below them.

"…Please tell me that's not another trial."

No one answered.

Because this time—

It wasn't the realm reacting.

It was something far older.

Something the balance had been keeping asleep.
