Practical Domestic Charms, Revised Edition

PrefaceIn the years following the publication of the original Practical Domestic Charms, a rather persistent complaint began arriving upon my desk.

While the volume was widely praised for its usefulness within the home — particularly among young witches and wizards newly living on their own — a number of readers felt it lacked something essential.

Namely, spells suited for those who spend a considerable portion of their lives beyond the comfort of the hearth.

Several correspondents, many of them country gentlemen of perfectly respectable disposition, expressed the opinion that a wizard should be able to conduct himself properly not only in the drawing room, but also in the woodlands and fields.

One memorable letter put the matter quite succinctly:

"If a wizard may charm his teacup to stir itself, he ought equally to possess the good sense to track a stag through fog and rain."

After some reflection, I found the argument difficult to dispute.

For centuries, witches and wizards lived as close to the land as their non-magical neighbors. Hunting, travel, and wilderness craft were not hobbies but necessities. Yet many of the small charms and practical spells used in such pursuits have slowly fallen from common instruction.

This revised edition therefore includes a new section devoted to Fieldcraft and Hunting Charms, collected from several older sources and refined for modern use.

It is my hope that these additions will restore a small measure of balance to the book.

For while a wizard may indeed live comfortably with the assistance of household charms, it remains a useful thing — and perhaps even a mark of good character — to know how to manage oneself when the walls of the house fall away and only the open country remains.

Household Charms

I

Cleaning & MaintenanceGeneral Cleaning CharmIncantation: Scourgify

Effect:

Removes dirt, stains, grease, and general grime from surfaces and objects. One of the most common household charms in the wizarding world.

Particularly effective on floors, dishes, furniture, and kitchen utensils.

Typical Wand Movement:

A small clockwise spiral followed by a quick outward flick.

Notes:

Often the first cleaning spell young witches and wizards learn.

Warning:Do not use on a delicate magical ingredients or fragile parchment, as the charm may damage them

Dust and Dirt Vanishing Spell

Incantation: Pulvis Evanesco

Effect:

Causes loose dust, ash, crumbs, and light debris to vanish instantly.

Unlike the general cleaning charm, this spell removes the material entirely rather than washing it away.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short sweeping motion across the affected surface.

Notes:

Commonly used on desks, shelves, and floors before casting more precise cleaning charms.

Warning:

Will not remove larger solid objects.

Garment Cleaning Charm

Incantation: Vestimenta Pura

Effect:

Removes dirt, dust, sweat, and minor stains from clothing without damaging the fabric. It does not repair tears or remove strong magical contamination, but it restores garments to a freshly washed state.

Often used by traveling wizards who lack access to laundry facilities.

Typical Wand Movement:

Small circular motion directed over the garment.

Notes:

Ideal for maintaining appearance when living alone. Particularly useful for robes and jackets that would otherwise require frequent washing.

Pressing Charm (Ironing Charm)

Incantation: Pressio

Effect:

Smooths wrinkles and creases in fabric as if the cloth had been ironed. The spell works best on clean, dry fabric and requires controlled wand movement to avoid scorching delicate material.

A skilled caster can press entire garments with a single sweep, while beginners usually manage small sections at a time.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short horizontal sweep followed by a downward flick.

Notes:

This is the charm for all bachelors. It is simple but demands control — too much force can stiffen fabric or leave unnatural creases. Too little and nothing happens.

Drying Charm

Incantation: Siccus

Effect:

Removes moisture from clothing, hair, or small objects. The charm gently draws water away and disperses it into the surrounding air.

Commonly used after rain, washing clothes, or bathing.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short upward flick followed by a gentle outward sweep.

Notes:

Favored by travelers and students who return from the grounds soaked by unexpected weather.

Warning:

Overuse in a confined space may cause the air to become uncomfortably humid.

Anti-Dust Ward

Incantation: Pulvis Repello

Effect:

Creates a subtle magical field that prevents dust and fine debris from settling on a surface.

Often cast on desks, bookshelves, mirrors, and storage chests to reduce the need for frequent cleaning.

The charm typically lasts several days before fading.

Typical Wand Movement:

Trace a slow rectangle around the object or surface being protected.

Notes:

Particularly useful for libraries, laboratories, and rooms containing delicate equipment.

Warning:

Does not repel magical residues such as potion fumes or spell ash.

Bed-Making CharmIncantation: Lectum Compono

Effect:

Straightens sheets, fluffs pillows, smooths blankets, and makes the bed neatly in a single controlled motion.

Most effective when the bedding is already mostly in place. It will not properly remake a bed if the sheets have been pulled entirely off or tangled beyond recognition.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short upward lift followed by a firm smoothing sweep across the bed.

Notes:

Favored by students, innkeepers, and anyone raised to believe an unmade bed invites sloppiness in all other things.

Warning:

May pull blankets too tightly if cast with excessive force.

Time-Keeping CharmIncantation: Tempus Teneo

Effect:

Anchors the caster's awareness to a chosen hour or interval, allowing them to wake, check, or keep track of time more reliably without a clock.

In stronger castings, the charm can be set to give a soft mental nudge or faint chime-like sensation at a specified time.

Typical Wand Movement:

Trace a small circle over the chest or temple, then tap the wand once while stating the desired hour or interval.

Notes:

Popular among students, travelers, and anyone who dislikes oversleeping.

Warning:

Imprecise wording may result in waking too early, too late, or at repeated intervals.

Environmental ComfortTemperature Adjustment CharmIncantation: Temperare

Effect:

Adjusts the temperature of a small area or object. Often used to warm a room slightly, cool drinking water, or regulate the temperature around bedding or clothing.

The spell does not create fire or ice; it simply shifts the surrounding thermal balance. Excessive use can make a room uncomfortable if the caster is careless.

Typical Wand Movement:

A slow horizontal sweep followed by a gentle upward lift.

Notes:

Commonly used by students studying late at night to keep rooms comfortable without lighting a fire.

Warming CharmIncantation: Calefacio

Effect:

Produces a gentle, sustained warmth in a targeted object — blankets, clothing, or hands. The charm fades gradually over time.

More focused than Temperare, but affects a smaller area.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short clockwise spiral directed at the object.

Notes:

Very popular with travelers and Quidditch spectators.

Cooling CharmIncantation: Frigoria

Effect:

Removes excess heat from an object or small space. Often used to cool drinks, soothe overheated rooms, or prevent food from spoiling temporarily.

Does not create frost unless deliberately overcast.

Typical Wand Movement:

Downward flick followed by a short outward push.

Smokeless Fire CharmIncantation: Ignis Sine Fumo

Effect:

Creates a small, controlled magical flame that produces heat and light but no smoke or soot. Commonly used indoors for fireplaces, cooking, or study lamps.

Unlike the standard Fire-Making Spell (Incendio), this charm is designed for sustained domestic use rather than combat or rapid ignition.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short upward flick followed by a small spiral.

Notes:

Favored by scholars, potion makers, and students who need steady heat without filling a room with smoke.

Organization & UtilityPacking Charm Incantation: Pack

Effect:

Causes nearby items to lift themselves, fold neatly, and organize themselves into a trunk, bag, or chest.

The caster typically gestures from the items toward the container, and the objects move into place automatically.

More skilled casters can make objects sort themselves logically (clothes with clothes, books with books, etc.).

Typical Wand Movement:

Sweep from the objects toward the container.

Advanced Packing Charm

Incantation: Ordinare Pack

Effect:

A refined version of the Packing Charm that sorts, folds, and stacks items efficiently, using space far better than the basic spell.

Frequently used by professional travelers, curse-breakers, and merchants who need to move large amounts of equipment quickly.

Typical Wand Movement:

Wide sweeping motion that circles the container before drawing objects inward.

Notes:

When cast well, even delicate objects such as potions or glassware will settle safely in place.

Unpacking CharmIncantation: Explicare

Effect:

Removes items from a container and places them neatly around the caster.

Clothes unfold and hang themselves, books stack properly, and tools arrange themselves on nearby surfaces.

Typical Wand Movement:

Lift the wand from the container outward in a gentle arc.

Notes:

Often used by travelers arriving at inns or campsites.

Quiet-Door Charm

Incantation: Silentium Cardo

Effect:

Silences the movement of hinges, handles, and latches, allowing a door or chest to open and close without sound.

Useful for early mornings, late-night study, or shared living spaces.

Typical Wand Movement:

Tap the hinge side of the door once, followed by a short downward stroke.

Notes:

Commonly used in dormitories and inns to prevent waking others.

Warning:

Does not silence footsteps or objects carried through the doorway.

Kitchen Charms

Stirring CharmIncantation: Misceri

Effect:

Causes a spoon, ladle, or whisk to stir food or liquids automatically at a steady pace.

Often used for soups, sauces, and potions that require continuous stirring.

Typical Wand Movement:

Small circular motion directed at the utensil.

Notes:

Favored by cooks preparing multiple dishes at once.

Warning:

Does not adjust heat or prevent burning if the caster is inattentive.

Gentle Heating CharmIncantation: Calor Lenis

Effect:

Produces a steady, mild heat beneath a pot or pan, suitable for cooking or warming food.

Unlike fire-making spells, the heat is controlled and even.

Typical Wand Movement:

A slow downward spiral beneath the cooking vessel.

Notes:

Common in wizard kitchens where open flames are inconvenient.

Warning:

Prolonged use may overheat thin cookware.

Personal Grooming & HygieneII

Personal Hygiene CharmIncantation: Corpus Mundare

Effect:

Cleans the caster's body — removing sweat, dirt, and surface grime while leaving skin and hair feeling freshly washed.

The spell does not replace proper bathing long term but is commonly used by travelers, duelists, and field researchers when bathing facilities are unavailable.

Typical Wand Movement:

A slow upward spiral motion starting near the chest.

Notes:

A practical spell to learn early. It requires careful control to avoid drying out skin or hair if used too aggressively

Teeth Cleaning Charm

Incantation: Dentes Mundare

Effect:

Cleans teeth and removes food residue, leaving the mouth feeling freshly brushed.

Often used in place of traditional toothbrushes.

Typical Wand Movement:

Short upward tap toward the mouth followed by a small circular motion.

Notes:

Common among travelers and students running late in the morning.

Warning:

Should not be used repeatedly within a short time as it may irritate the gums.

Hair Grooming Charm

Incantation: Capillus Ordinare

Effect:

Smooths, untangles, and arranges hair neatly.

Commonly used before formal events or daily routines.

Typical Wand Movement:

A slow downward combing motion with the wand.

Notes:

Particularly popular with students preparing for school photographs or formal dinners.

Hair Trimming CharmIncantation: Capillus SecareEffect:

Trims hair to a controlled length determined by the caster's intent.

Can be used to tidy uneven ends or shorten long hair.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short horizontal sweep just above the hairline.

Notes:

Often used by traveling witches and wizards who cannot visit a barber.

Warning:

Requires concentration. Poor visualization may result in uneven cuts.

Beard Grooming CharmIncantation: Barba Ordinare

Effect:

Trims and shapes facial hair, leaving it neat and well kept.

May also be used to shorten stubble or tidy mustaches.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short downward stroke along the jawline.

Notes:

Widely used by older wizards and those who prefer maintaining beards.

Warning:

Not recommended for inexperienced casters attempting complex styles.

Fieldcraft & Hunting CharmsIII

Tracking & Awareness

Tracking CharmIncantation: Vestigium Revelare

Effect:

Reveals faint traces of movement left behind by living creatures. Footprints, disturbed soil, bent grass, and residual body warmth may become briefly visible to the caster.

The charm does not identify the creature but helps a hunter follow its trail more easily.

Typical Wand Movement:

Point the wand toward the ground and trace a slow zig-zag motion.

Notes:

Most effective within a few hours of the target passing through the area.

Warning:

Heavy rain, strong wind, or magical interference may obscure the trail.

Weather Sense CharmIncantation: Tempestas Sentire

Effect:

Allows the caster to sense subtle atmospheric changes such as approaching rain, strong winds, or sudden temperature shifts.

The spell does not control the weather, but provides the caster with a brief intuitive awareness of upcoming conditions.

Typical Wand Movement:

Raise the wand vertically, then draw a slow circle in the air.

Notes:

Favored by hunters, farmers, sailors, and wilderness travelers who rely on early warning of changing conditions.

Warning:

The charm offers impressions rather than precise forecasts.

Night Vision CharmIncantation: Noctis Oculus

Effect:

Enhances the caster's eyesight in low light, allowing them to see clearly in darkness without producing visible illumination.

Colors appear muted and bright light sources may seem unusually intense while the charm is active.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short upward motion toward both eyes followed by a small outward sweep.

Notes:

Commonly used by hunters, wardens, and night travelers moving through forests or poorly lit terrain.

Warning:

Looking directly at bright magical light while the charm is active may temporarily dazzle the caster.

Poison Detection CharmIncantation: Venenum Revelio

Effect:

Detects toxic substances in food, drink, plants, or animal tissue.

When poison is present, the object briefly emits a faint colored shimmer visible to the caster.

Typical Wand Movement:

A light tap on the object followed by a short upward flick.

Notes:

Often used before eating unfamiliar plants or game in the wilderness.

Warning:

May not detect extremely rare magical poisons.

Stealth & Movement

Presence Dampening CharmIncantation: Praesentia Velare

Effect:

Softens the caster's magical and physical presence, making them less noticeable to nearby creatures.

The charm does not grant invisibility but reduces the chance of drawing attention through sudden movement or magical aura.

Typical Wand Movement:

Draw the wand downward slowly from head to waist.

Notes:

Common among hunters, scouts, and magical wardens.

Warning:

Strong magical creatures may still sense the caster.

Predatory Stalking CharmIncantation: Instinctus Venator

Effect:

Enhances the caster's awareness of their own movement and balance, subtly guiding them to move more quietly and efficiently while stalking prey.

The charm does not control the caster's body but nudges posture, breathing, and foot placement toward smoother motion.

Over time, repeated use can help build natural muscle memory and field awareness.

Typical Wand Movement:

A slow spiral drawn over the caster's chest.

Notes:

Experienced hunters claim the charm feels like a quiet instinct guiding their steps.

Warning:

Overreliance may dull natural caution. The charm aids movement but does not replace skill or judgment.

Scent Erasing CharmIncantation: Odor Absentia

Effect:

Suppresses the caster's scent and removes lingering odors from clothing or equipment, making it harder for animals to detect the caster through smell.

Typical Wand Movement:

A slow circular motion around the body.

Notes:

Favored by hunters pursuing creatures with a strong sense of smell.

Warning:

Does not eliminate noise or visual signs of movement.

Trail Obscuring Charm

Incantation: Vestigia Celare

Effect:

Conceals or disturbs physical signs of travel such as footprints, bent grass, disturbed soil, and broken twigs.

Rather than erasing tracks entirely, the charm blends them naturally into the surrounding terrain, making them difficult to follow.

Typical Wand Movement:

A sweeping motion behind the caster, drawn low across the ground.

Notes:

Often used by hunters leaving a stalking position or travelers wishing to avoid pursuit.

Warning:

Heavy use may leave subtle magical residue detectable by skilled trackers.

Hunting & Survival

Rendering CharmIncantation: Praeda Redigere

Effect:

Used by hunters to process animal carcasses quickly and efficiently.

The spell can:

Separate hide from flesh

Remove bones cleanly

Preserve usable meat

Isolate organs for potion or alchemical use

The charm does not kill the animal; it only works on already dead creatures.

Typical Wand Movement:

A slow slicing motion followed by a downward cut.

Notes:Favored by magical hunters and wilderness explorers who need to use as much of a kill as possible without wasting material.

Warning! You need containers for your new products, this is a charm not a transfiguration spell so, no conjuring involved!

Game Preservation CharmIncantation: Praeda Servare

Effect:

Slows the natural spoilage of freshly harvested meat by suppressing bacterial growth and slowing decomposition.

The charm does not freeze the meat but keeps it fresh and safe for consumption for several days, depending on environmental conditions.

Typical Wand Movement:

A slow horizontal sweep across the carcass or prepared cuts of meat.

Notes:

Commonly used by hunters and traveling parties who must transport game over long distances.

The spell works best when cast soon after the animal has been rendered and cleaned.

Warning:

Does not protect against magical contamination or already spoiled meat.

Proper storage containers are still recommended.

Bolthole Charm (Advanced Fieldcraft Spell)Incantation: Refugium Venator

Effect:

Temporarily expands a small natural cavity—such as a hollow tree, burrow, or rock crevice—into a concealed shelter large enough for the caster to occupy.

From the outside, the opening remains unchanged in size, while the interior space is magically expanded in a manner similar to an Undetectable Extension Charm.

The spell also suppresses the magical signature of the space, making the shelter difficult to detect through casual magical sensing.

Typical Wand Movement:

Trace a slow oval around the opening of the cavity, then press the wand tip as near to the center of the opening as possible.

Notes:

Used by hunters and wilderness scouts when concealment or protection from weather or enemies is required.

The space typically lasts several hours before collapsing back to its original size.

Warning:

This charm is unstable without reinforcement.

Longer-term use requires additional magical stabilization, commonly through runic arrays or anchored mana channels placed around the entrance.

Failure to stabilize the space may cause the charm to collapse suddenly.

The shaping process should feel like balancing a pressure bubble — too little force and nothing formed, too much and the structure burst. A delicate middle point had to be found and maintained.

Like blowing glass. Or, more accurately, like blowing soap bubbles.

Winter Fieldcraft Charms

Snow Walking CharmIncantation: Nix Gradior

Effect:

Distributes the caster's weight evenly across the surface beneath their feet, allowing them to walk over snow, slush, or thin ice without sinking or breaking through. The effect is achieved through a slight feather-lightening influence; the heavier the caster, the more costly the spell becomes.

The charm works by momentarily stiffening the surface tension of the snow or ice directly under each step.

Typical Wand Movement:

A short downward tap toward both boots followed by a small outward sweep.

Notes:

Favored by hunters, rangers, and winter travelers moving across deep snow or frozen lakes.

Particularly useful in early spring when ice may be unstable.

Warning:

The charm supports only the caster's weight. Sudden jumping or running may still break weak ice.

Frostbite Protection CharmIncantation: Gelum Arceo

Effect:

Creates a subtle warming field around the caster's extremities, protecting fingers, toes, ears, and nose from extreme cold.

The spell does not generate heat but reduces the body's heat loss.

Typical Wand Movement:

A slow circular motion around the hands and feet.

Notes:

Often used during long hunts or overnight watches in cold climates.

Warning:

Does not replace proper clothing or shelter in severe weather.

Ice Grip CharmIncantation: Glacies Tenere

Effect:

Improves traction on ice and frozen ground by subtly increasing friction beneath the caster's footwear.

Typical Wand Movement:

Tap the toe of each boot lightly with the wand.

Notes:

Useful when climbing icy slopes or crossing frozen rivers.

Warning:

Does not prevent slipping if the caster moves recklessly.
