Chapter 23 - A New Dawn

The next morning, the palace felt different.

For the first time in years, Aria woke up without the weight of a crown or the fear of enemies hiding in shadows. The war was over. Her uncle was imprisoned. The council had taken control of the kingdom.

And she… was finally free.

But freedom felt strange.

She stood by the palace window, watching the sunrise spread golden light across the city. People were walking in the streets again. Shops were opening. Children were laughing.

Life was returning.

Behind her, a familiar voice spoke.

"Still thinking too much?"Aria turned.

Rowan leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, a small smile on his face.

"You're staring at the city like it might disappear," he said.

Aria sighed softly.

"For years I believed this kingdom was my responsibility," she said. "Now it feels like it never belonged to me."

Rowan walked closer.

"Maybe it didn't," he replied. "Maybe your life was never meant to be about thrones."

Aria looked at him carefully.

"And what about you?" she asked. "What willyou do now that the war is over?"

Rowan looked out at the city.

"For years I lived in shadows," he said quietly. "Fighting battles nobody knew about. I don't think I want that life anymore."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Aria smiled slightly.

"What if we both start over?" she said.

Rowan raised an eyebrow.

"Start over how?"

"Leave the palace," Aria replied. "Leave the politics, the council, all of it."

Rowan looked surprised.

"And go where?"Aria looked toward the distant mountains beyond the city walls.

"Anywhere," she said.

"For the first time in our lives… we can choose."

Rowan studied her face for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

"You know," he said, "running away from a kingdom together sounds like something we should have done three years ago."

Aria laughed softly.

"Yes," she said. "But maybe we needed the war to learn what really mattered."

Rowan extended his hand again — just like he had the night before.

"Then let's go," he said."No crowns. No secrets."

Aria placed her hand in his.

"No lies," she agreed.

But as they turned to leave the palace…

neither of them noticed the man watching from the shadows of the council hall.

A man holding a sealed letter.

A letter marked with the royal crest.

And a message written in cold ink:

"The true war has not yet begun."
