Chapter 58 - The Whispering Gate

The mountains no longer felt like part of the world.

They felt… separate.

As if they existed between reality and something far darker.

Aria and Rowan continued forward, their footsteps echoing faintly against the jagged stone path. The air grew colder with every step, pressing against their bodies like an invisible force trying to push them back.

But they didn't stop.

They couldn't.

Not anymore.

Rowan's hand tightened unconsciously.

The mark on his shoulder…

It hadn't stopped glowing.

Not even for a second.

It pulsed slowly—like a heartbeat.

But not his.

Something else.

Something ancient.

Something watching.

"You're still feeling it, aren't you?" Aria asked without looking at him.

Rowan let out a quiet breath.

"Yeah."

His voice was lower now.

Serious.

"It's not just calling me anymore…"

He paused.

"It's… guiding me."

Aria stopped walking.

That made Rowan stop too.

She turned to face him fully this time.

"That's not a good thing."

"I know."

"But it's the only lead we have."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence between them was heavy—but not uncomfortable.

It was understanding.

Trust.

Then suddenly—

A deep rumble echoed through the mountains.

The ground beneath them trembled.

Cracks spread across the rocky path like veins.

Aria instantly drew her sword.

"Get ready."

Rowan's flames flickered to life in his palm.

"I'm always ready."

But this wasn't an attack.

Not yet.

High above them—

The black crack in the sky began to expand.

Slowly.

Unnaturally.

Like something was pushing from the other side.

The clouds twisted violently around it, forming a massive spiral.

And then—

A sound.

Not a roar.

Not a scream.

But something far worse.

A low… endless hum.

Like the sound of existence itself breaking.

Rowan froze.

His eyes widened.

"Aria…"

"I see it."

But even she—calm, composed Aria—couldn't hide the tension in her voice.

"That's not a gate…"

She tightened her grip on her sword.

"That's a wound."

The moment she said that—

The mark on Rowan's shoulder burned.

Hard.

He dropped to one knee again.

"—Ghh!"

"Rowan!"

Aria rushed to him, supporting his weight.

But this time—

Something was different.

Rowan's eyes…

Were glowing.

Not with flame.

Not with light.

But with something darker.

Deeper.

Endless.

"I can see it…" he whispered.

Aria froze.

"See what?"

Rowan slowly lifted his head.

But it didn't feel like he was looking at the mountains anymore.

Or the sky.

Or even the world.

"I can see… what's beyond it."

And then—

Everything changed.

For a split second—

The world around them disappeared.

Rowan stood alone.

In darkness.

Infinite.

Silent.

No ground.

No sky.

No air.

Just…

Void.

And in that endless emptiness—

Something moved.

A presence.

So vast…

That it couldn't be seen fully.

Only felt.

A single eye opened.

Far beyond distance.

Far beyond reality.

And it looked directly at him.

Rowan's breath stopped.

His body froze.

His soul… trembled.

Then—

A voice.

Not heard.

But understood.

"You have returned."

Rowan's mind shook violently.

"I… don't even know you…"

Silence.

Then—

A slow, almost amused response.

"Not yet."

The darkness pulsed.

The presence grew closer.

Heavier.

"But you will."

Rowan felt something inside him react.

The mark on his shoulder burned like fire.

No—

Worse than fire.

"Stay out of my head!" he shouted.

For the first time—

The presence paused.

Then—

It spoke again.

"You were never separate."

The words echoed like a truth he didn't want to accept.

Suddenly—

A bright light cut through the darkness.

"ROWAN!"

Aria's voice.

And just like that—

The void shattered.

Rowan gasped as he returned to reality.

Back to the mountains.

Back to the cold air.

Back to her.

He collapsed forward slightly—but Aria caught him.

"I'm here," she said firmly.

"Stay with me."

Rowan's breathing was heavy.

Unstable.

"That… thing…"

Aria's eyes were sharp.

"What did you see?"

Rowan hesitated.

For the first time—

He looked afraid.

"Not a monster," he said slowly.

"Not like the Abyss Lord…"

He clenched his fist.

"Something worse."

Aria didn't respond immediately.

But her silence said everything.

Above them—

The crack in the sky expanded again.

Wider.

Darker.

More unstable.

And from within it—

For just a brief second—

A massive shadow shifted.

Watching.

Waiting.

The war they thought had ended…

Had only been the beginning.
